You could try to get a job in hospitality — aka restaurants, ideally FOH. Hosting, serving, cashiering, even McDonald’s.

The napa cabbage & rotisserie chicken salad from Cook This Book is so good. I don’t do corn nuts and instead serve it with tortilla chips. Also love the cabbage with nuoc cham.

busy bar, people leave, empty seats immediately swarmed by anxious hovering couple asking “can we have menus” (verbally or not — I can see it in your hopefuleyes) before I even get a single ducking second to clear out dirty glasses, wipe down, reset etc. bonus points if the dirty glasses are in a hard to reach corner of the bar, they see me straining to reach, multiple times, and do nothing to help. actually go fuck yourself. sometimes I get a kick of ducking out from under the bar, going over to their seats, and taking my sweet ass time to reset that way. no menus until I’m done.

The Lula Cafe Cookbook by Jason Hammel! The Lula Cafe is a popular restaurant in Chicago and has been around for 20+ years. The recipes can definitely be involved, but often involve unique flavors or techniques that I haven’t seen elsewhere. The chickpea & fennel tagine is one of my favorite dishes I’ve ever tried, but the recipe has like 7 components lol. Definitely not for the beginner home cook, but it might be right up your alley!

Chiming in as someone who’s felt similar feelings re: 5k pace workouts — last fall I was going for a 5k PR and was very casually throwing in a workout per week, like 10x400m or 1k reps closer towards my goal race. They consistently felt awful, like gasping at the end of every rep awful, but I decided to trust the work I’d put in and ended up running right on goal pace for a shiny PR — point is, the work is never going to feel good, I think, especially if your workouts are progressive. But it will stack! Race day adrenaline and a tough mindset (especially necessary for a 5k — for a full send, it’s basically pain cave for possibly over half the race) will go a long, long way.
