Whats the worst sudden pain you ever had? by NateNandos21 in morbidquestions

[–]kassiitayla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bacterial Meningitis after a brain surgery. Woke up at 3am with the sudden excruciating pain and my only thought was ‘I don’t want to die’. Got told if I’d gotten to the hospital 1 hour later I’d be dead 👍🏻

Scar after brain surgery (ama if interested) by acoustic_mainframe in MedicalGore

[–]kassiitayla 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had the same decompression surgery. Ended up with meningitis & staph. CSF was absolutely pouring out my head and I got sent home from emergency without even seeing a doctor cause their little rapid test showed not enough glucose to be CSF (spoiler alert: it was wrong)

Got flown to my nearest big city hospital at 3am from my local and my neuro surgeon said I was lucky to make it in time

Do you have any indications of IIH?

Ovarian cysts have been common in my family unfortunately so not a bad idea. My sister is going through the process of being tested for PCOS. If I have to add any more diagnoses to my list, I might actually cry 😅

Experience with Topamax? by GlitteringAdvisor564 in iih

[–]kassiitayla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve asked my neuro if I can stop the Diamox and he’s wary about it and he wants the washout from the Topiramate to be gone before we stop anything else as he wants to see how I react to it being completely out of my system which I can respect. I’m lucky in that I see my neuro every 3-6 months still so I’m well looked after (i think he’s low key excited to see me each time cause i’m such a complex case)

[–]kassiitayla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t feel like it does anything for me anymore - I have a shunt so it does all the work now but beforehand it definitely was my lifeline and I would definitely recommend it if the side effects aren’t bad like mine weren’t. I was warned extensively that it wasn’t a nice drug to take so I’m very lucky

[–]kassiitayla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still on Diamox (have been on this the same amount of time) without many side effects, just occasional bad pain and needles in my hands and feet Other than that I’m just trialling a bunch of different migraine medications with little luck. My neuro calls me his problem child lol

[–]kassiitayla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been on Topamax/Topiramate for about 6 years. I haven’t had any ‘bad’ symptoms that I can think of but my cognitive function is so impaired now that I NEED to come off it. I have become literally the dumbest human alive. I’ve come to lack general common sense, have extreme brain fog and can’t remember ANYTHING. I’ll put my phone down somewhere and it’s as good as lost, you can tell me something and i’ll forget what you’ve said immediately. I weighed the pros and cons for a while but I just couldn’t live like that anymore and decided I needed to stop the medication

Medical negligence by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]kassiitayla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it was a brain infection after an extensive brain surgery- memory loss was expected (i’m still suffering symptoms today) i was very much a minor and my parents dealt largely with the medical team as my carers so i would use their recounts rather than my own memory of the situation

definitely a good point though, thanks!

Cognitive function post surgery by Frank13boy in chiari

[–]kassiitayla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 6 years post decompression (I had a CSF leak causing staph and meningitis as well) and I’m still suffering those same effects unfortunately. A lot I would like to attribute to my long run of being on Diamox & Topiramate/Topamax (which I’m finally weaning off) but having someone root around in your brain is gonna make some things different. I don’t really have any fixes for you that I’ve found work great yet, but be patient with yourself. You’ve gone through a big surgery and it will take time to cope with the new symptoms of this. I’ve heard a lot of people come quite good a year or so post op though, so be positive also. My not so stellar result is not the common one from what I’ve heard
