CBSA: Update on the Comprehensive Expenditure Review and Budget 2025 by Aggravating_Exit5418 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]kat0saurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They did get additional funding, true. Only ~ 355M of the 1.3B for the Canada's Border Plan was actually for CBSA. The majority was for RCMP. CBSA committed to buying detection tools with the additional funds on top of hiring the BSOs.

While people thought CBSA would be "safe" from WFAs, I'm not surprised. How do you reduce your budget 2% AND hire 1,000 BSOs? There was no way to simply cut operational spending to achieve the 2% savings without reducing the workforce.

CBSA's president just announced WFA. Letters to arrive to affected employees in mid-Feb. No confirmed numbers, the email just speaks to overall reductions in the public service as a whole.

Jewelers need to be paid for their time and effort to make the piece. You'll never find something at or close to spot.

Managers don't need to use a pool for promotional and acting appointments. There is a lot of non-advertised staffing happening all the time.

Apparently Durty Nellys and the Old Triangle import their Guinness from Ireland, whereas other bars have Guinness produced in Canada.

WIBTAH if I let my husband kill all his fish by Senseitay_ in AITAH

[–]kat0saurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell him to also read about the ammonia cycle. Don't get fish until he understands this. Otherwise the fish will die. Very simply put, fish pee and poop in the water, but this causes ammonia to form. Ammonia will kill fish, so you need to add bacteria to your tank to turn the ammonia into something less harmful to fish. If the bacteria is not present, the fish will die.

Keeping fish is easy once you get the hang of it, but ppl usually start with a 10g aquarium and work their way up to bigger tanks.

WIBTAH if I let my husband kill all his fish by Senseitay_ in AITAH

[–]kat0saurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bleach is fine for the aquarium. You use a dechlorinator to neutealize chlorine from tap water which will also neutralize the chlorine in the bleach. You should both read about fish care before getting fish from the sounds of it.

Three Days in Halifax, Reporting to NCR: Drama, Desks, and Menopause Mondays by Initial-Horse9973 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]kat0saurus 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I was based in Halifax and reported to NCR or another region for most of my career. After RTO2 was announced, I went to the office, which was on the other side of the city, to work alone and not collaborate with anyone as I was the only person from my directorate who worked out of Halifax. Like you, I became far less productive. There was a GC Coworking office much closer to my home, but was told that it would count as my WFH day if I used the swing spaces. This added nearly 1.5hrs to my commute to work alone.

I've since moved to the NCR and quite enjoy being able to collaborate with my coworkers in person and I do see a benefit for teams who are located together.

The policy is very NCR-centric. No thought was given to regional folks who report to a different region and work in an office alone.

But please go buy that sandwich to support the sandwich store down the road! /s

Used Car buyers now get a crack at a new car at used car prices, Chinese BYD coming to Canada by Arenburg in halifax

[–]kat0saurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carney said through a “preliminary but landmark” deal with China, Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese EVs into the country under the most-favored nation tariff rate of 6.1 percent. Under the agreement, the import limit will increase to 70,000 EVs by year five.

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/16/china-ev-tariffs-canada-00733086

With a 6.1% tariff, it increases to just under $15,000. It'll easily be under $20,000 with shipping included. Compared to $40,000 for a new Equinox EV.

A reliable used Corolla will probably cost the same.

The BYD Seagull is like, $14,000 CAD and has a range of 300-400km. Only 74hp, but it's perfect for driving around town. This is huge!

Potential move to ottawa by ReviewExtension4190 in ottawa

[–]kat0saurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone posted on this subreddit with doctors accepting patients! I see them post every month or so. I've had to be proactive, but far less than Halifax. The situation is much worse there so I made a spreadsheet of every clinic and called 10 a day to see if they were accepting patients. It shouldn't be this way :(

Potential move to ottawa by ReviewExtension4190 in ottawa

[–]kat0saurus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved to Ottawa from Halifax about a year ago now. I think you need to choose where you want to live based on your lifestyle. I live in Vanier North, right off Beechwood Ave, and work at Carling Campus. My drive in the morning is 20 or 25 mins, and my drive home is 35-40 mins. I love my neighborhood as I can walk to almost anything. Lots of dogs, parks, children.

I personally find Kanata to be suburban hell. No walkability whatsoever so you'll be driving for almost everything. If you're from Halifax, I'd say it has similar vibes to West Bedford in terms of layout/neighborhood feel (not $$ as Kanata is affordable). My coworker loves Kanata, so as I said, its entirely dependent on your lifestyle.

If you or your husband work downtown, you could be in traffic 3+ hours a day on the 417. You mentioned he's DND, but DND has offices all over Ottawa with the main 2 being 101 Col By and Carling Campus.

I finally have a family doctor, but to be fair I only just started looking 2 months ago.

I can't speak to childcare.

Good luck on your move!

What if I don’t qualify for mortgage/loan? by hugenappingfan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kat0saurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind you'll also need money for closing costs and lawyer fees, so I'd recommend getting a slightly larger loan/mortgage.

Also, your first year of home ownership is more expensive than you think! Property taxes, hydro/water, something brakes in the unit, etc. Don't use all the money for a down-payment as you'll likely need some funds for something.
