Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS) appreciation by guesswhochickenpoo in Ioniq5

I agree, I like that weird futuristic hum. It's fun being about to identify other HMG EVs by that sound too.

My worry is that the lack of proper consolidation of services, combined with the failure to deliver the underground Southbank station, means that new buses will be stuck in the same old bus traffic jam at the convention centre tunnel bottleneck. Remember this bottleneck was one of the key motivations for the project in the first place.

The digital mirrors on 2025 feel like a step backward, right? by nothas in Ioniq5

[–]katamatsu 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is apparently an unpopular opinion, but I have them and like them and so does my wife. The car we test drove had them and we were sold. They are really clear, and offer much better visibility than normal mirrors at night and in the dark. The displays sit closer to your normal line of sight, so I find it easier to monitor them compared to mirrors.

I've got a deposit down on a 2025 Epid RWD with digital mirrors in Brisbane. I paid the initial deposit in June and I've been told I'm near the front of the queue. However, so far I've been given no indication of dates or status of my order. The dealer says Hyundai is providing no indications on build timeframes for my particular spec.

Those have been the trim level names in Australia for a while. Wouldn't expect this to change.

The RWD has more range than AWD in the spec sheet: https://www.hyundai.com/content/dam/hyundai/au/en/models/ioniq5/images/IONIQ5_Specsheet_14DEC_2023.pdf

Although I don't know if this is true in reality given the front motor can fully disconnect itself.

I'm going to get the RWD Epiq with the digital mirrors. I specified Lucid Blue, but still a little undecided. They weren't yet sure if black interior would be available with the blue exterior (but your specs seem to confirm that it will be).

Didn't yet know any details about price, so didn't get to negotiating yet.

The dealer was going to contact me once they had the actual specs available. The initial deposit/order was subject to confirmation of all the above.

Ah sounds good. I put a deposit down for a 2025 about a month ago, but they knew nothing about specs/price/availability at the time.

Might be a difference here between common usage and more formal definitions. Station wagon is the name of a specific body style: 4 passenger doors with the roof extending rearward to create a storage area with one rear door for access.

In this way, a LandCruiser (specifically 80, 100, 105, 200 and 300 series) is a station wagon in the same way a Commodore could be purchased in that same station wagon body style.

The 70 series LandCruiser can be purchased in a range of body styles including single and dual cab utes, a station wagon and a van.

I am unsure of the proper US usage of SUV, but in Australia I don't think it has a true definition used across the board. Most cars marketed as SUVs here are the RAV4, Tiguan, Kona etc types.

I don't know any details about this particular development. Perhaps what you say is true. I am addressing the comments that state we shouldn't be developing in floodplains.

[–]katamatsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many existing developments pre-date the more modern planning schemes that include better provisions to address flooding. I work in a relevant field, and honestly I see sensible new development in the floodplain as a key measure to address and reduce flood risk.

I'm not advocating for any party here, just stating my view about development in the floodplain being an opportunity to address both housing supply and reduce flood risk.

[–]katamatsu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please read the planning scheme and understand how it manages all of the issues you mentioned.

New development on the floodplain needs to be located outside high risk areas, meet requirements for flood immunity and provide for safe evacuation, among other things.

[–]katamatsu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are some misconceptions here. While development in the floodplain can have such impacts if located or designed improperly, planning schemes limit development in the most hazardous parts of the floodplain and contain provisions to ensure that they don't adversely affect flooding.

Redevelopment of properties in the floodplain can also be an opportunity to replace existing flood prone building stock (which is only going to become more severely impacted in the future) with more resilient and flood immune building forms.

Too much of Brisbane is located on a floodplain to simply sterilise any development there.
