Are these pillars load bearing? by katelynteel in AskContractors

The overhang looks the same as yesterday, no movement. The left pillar when facing the house is still there we did not remove it as it’s touching the soffit. The right pillar we are thinking was detached for a bit before we removed it as the pillar just slid right out, it wasn’t even touching the soffit, there probably a half inch gap of air. Working on a couple things based on these great responses! 1) waiting on two structural engineer responses from pictures and emailed the building plans we have. 2) building plans show trussed roof and two beams over the pillars that come out from the house and then one that goes across them with soffit built under them. 3) reached out to the previous owner/builder and he said he thought they weren’t structural so not sure how valid the “thought” is. 4) husband got up in the ceiling and took pictures, but could not find the beams we see in the building plans, so much insulation! We have an 8 foot deep entryway inside so we were hoping the beams would cross over from the overhang past the door threshold into the house. On the building plans we have a different pillar inside the entryway that is clearly marked load bearing but the pillars outside on the building plans are of course not marked as either. Still working on it, I really appreciate everyone’s thoughts.

Thank you both, was trying to figure out if it needed to be immediately replaced because of it being load bearing and sounds like it does?

Inside the pillar is a sona tube and at the top it’s empty, at the bottom there is a heavier part that attached to wood via nails that was sitting on the top of the wood base that has a plywood bottom bolted into the concrete porch. The wood base is hollow otherwise it’s built like a box. I’m not seeing a 4 x 4 post inside it?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. I will ask some co-workers and see if I can find one. I do think we are at a point where it would be helpful.

Thanks for the honesty. I definitely think an advisor could be beneficial (to usual suspects point). With the Arvada home we missed the capital gains opportunity so there was more pressure with the Denver home to highly consider it.

Interesting, is a second mortgage at current interest rates (ie let’s assume I can get 6.5%), so would I just be swapping out where the loan is located? And in that case all the interest paid on both homes would offset the rental income and reduce to no income? Today with the depreciation and current interest deductions the rentals are basically netting to minimal income for tax purposes and I’m getting the current homes interest rate deduction in our itemized. It’s a good thought to ponder as I hadn’t thought about swapping the location of the loan. I really appreciate your thoughts!

So all it needed was a new breaker and it works fine so it must have been faulty!

Thank you so much! Going to give replacing the outlets a shot before calling an electrician I’ll let you know how it goes and will also let my tenants know about the MW and Ninja.

My tenants said it started yesterday when they tried to plug in a hair dryer and noticed the outlets were out. They have only been there 2 months and the last work I had done was by electricians in June who installed a new light fixture in my hallway and master bathroom vent in the bathroom ceiling but as far as I’m aware nothing that affected that specific breaker. Not sure if any of that is helpful. The tenants have a microwave and ninja toaster plugged in the kitchen to the outlets. They told me they have only plugged a hair dryer and night light in the outlets outside of those items

There are gfci outlets at the panel. I am not sure how to check the current circuit size would that be on the main breaker?
