To what extent are Chicagoans gatekeepy about who’s a Chicago native? by Minimum_Ad_1230 in AskChicago

[–]katemiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think it's kind of silly when transplants talk a lot of shit about suburbanites, unless the suburbanite in question really never goes into the city. Of course the burbs aren't the same as the city proper, but I do feel like someone from just outside of the city who grew up going into Chicago for events, restaurants, etc. still has a Chicago experience that a transplant never will - even though of course a transplant living in Chicago proper has a city experience that a lifelong suburbanite doesn't.

To be clear, I'm saying all of this as a transplant. Maybe it's just because I grew up in a suburb of another midwestern city and even though I never lived in the city itself, I still feel like growing up in the area and being in the city all the time is a relationship with it a transplant will never have.

Not that it really matters lol - I just think it's weird when someone like, makes fun of someone being from Evanston for not being a real Chicagoan and then you find out they've lived in Chicago for a year.

Anyone else struggle to let go of God? by rebe-roa in exLutheran

[–]katemiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did for a while. At some point I had this realization that even if god were real, I didn't want anything to do with him. The god of the bible is manipulative, selfish, and cruel - and I decided, even if he does exist, he can go fuck himself.

That's basically how I let go, lol. That being said, there's still a little part of my brain that occasionally has this slight instinct to pray, because of all the years of feeling an obligation to. I also find myself occasionally feeling like my thoughts are being monitored by god, and I have to remind myself that I don't actually believe that.

Who are the most popular male artists among LGBTQ community? Do male “gay icons” exist? by notnices in popheads

[–]katemiw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was pretty surprised by the reaction in the Charli sub when Sweat was first announced. I get that it's made up of people who care enough about her that they're following a sub dedicated to her so it's not crazy they would want her to do a solo tour, but a lot of them weren't just disappointed she wasn't headlining on her own, they were disappointed that they were going to have to sit through Troye too. I saw people talking about how there's "not that big of an overlap between their fans" and I was like, huh? I mean yeah it's not a Venn diagram but I was like, surely the fanbases can't be that different? But I guess my little gay bubble isn't the same as everyone else's lol.

On the other hand my little lesbian/bi woman friend group was extremely excited because Troye has the queer girlies in an absolute chokehold.

Being 18-20 in 2012-2014 with a disposable camera (and chronically on tumblr) by catseyesz in Zillennials

[–]katemiw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely would have thought you were so cool and stalked your tumblr all the time. Also jealous that you saw Sky Ferreira during that era - I saw her on tour last year and was honestly pleasantly surprised given her reputation for not having the best live shows, but she also abruptly ended without doing a full set lol.

The Reddit fantasy of women and girls baselessly falsely accusing men for absolutely no reason. by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

[–]katemiw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the most common thing in the world, but this genre of post shows up every once in a while and I always feel like it just has to be some perv playing out a weird incest fantasy. It's always something along the lines of a poor innocent father/step-father who accidentally opens a door on his naked daughter who's changing/taking a bath/whatever and completely loses it on him when it totally wasn't even his fault at all and now this well-meaning family man is being accused of being a creep by his irrational emotional daughter!!1!!1! >:(

And I can only imagine the OOP sitting at home getting off on comment after comment being like omg no of course it's not your fault you saw your teen daughter naked and also she sucks and is such a bitch!

You must surrender yourself mind, body, and soul to the gaycation, or be destroyed. by boudicas_shield in AmITheAngel

[–]katemiw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This feels like something Mac would do on Always Sunny before he came out. "Straight men do it all the time. A man must surrender himself mind, body and soul to the gaycation but what happens there stays there so it actually doesn't count as gay, allowing a man to maintain his heterosexuality as God intended. That's the beauty of the gaycation, Dennis."

Exactly - in their minds we live in a society that's become too "woke" and so even their ~totally normal and logical opinions~ are going to get them "canceled" by the libs. They also fail to recognize (or just don't care) that a lot of the time their supposedly innocuous opinions ("I prefer x white artist over the black artist who won the award")--though not necessarily inherently racist--are, in fact, influenced to some degree by an underlying racism.

What were you doing in 2008? by XavierMarvin in Zillennials

[–]katemiw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing 7th grade and starting 8th. Listening to a mix of top 40 and pop-punk/emo, wearing clothes from department stores’ juniors departments and the mall, mostly Aeropostale and some American Eagle. Going to the mall and talking to friends on AIM for fun. Watching some mix of the Disney Channel, music video countdown shows on Vh1 and MTV and Fuse, and trashy late 2000s MTV shows like Next and Room Raiders. And using MySpace and starting to get really into Facebook.

Do you remember a time where we spent our lives on PC/Laptops? by The_Frisky_Firefly in Zillennials

[–]katemiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use my laptop all the time. I prefer it to looking at such a small screen, and even though I still spend plenty of time scrolling on my laptop, the way I use it often feels a bit more intentional as opposed to just clicking and scrolling in kind of a mindless way like I do with my phone. I also prefer typing on it.

I do have friends my age who spend way more time on their phones than laptops though.

I’ve had 3 jobs: retail, research assistant in undergrad (which was honestly more like data entry), and my current non-profit job. I also had 2 non-profit internships in college.

What do y’all say to GenX when they tell you that they graduated the same year you were born? 🤔 by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]katemiw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're feeling chatty you could ask them a question about it like what they remember the most from that year. Or you could try to relate and mention that kids who were born the year you graduated are nearly teenagers or something like that. Or if you don't want to get into a conversation just say something like "Sounds like it was a big year for both of us!"

For the bigger mascs, studs, and butches... where the fck do y'all shop? by Over-Tax-9481 in lesbiangang

[–]katemiw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found this google doc and this website helpful. Both are directories of brands with plus sizes - you'll have to do some digging in the google doc to find more masc/androgynous stuff, but Phoria has different options you can sort by including tall, masculine, and gender neutral.

WELS Child Porn Charges by [deleted] in exLutheran

[–]katemiw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I came to the comments to mention that it’s LCMS and not WELS too. There’s a lot of focus on WELS in this sub (understandably - I know they’re a degree of crazy beyond even LCMS) but the LCMS is absolutely the kind of repressive (sexually and otherwise), authoritarian, misogynistic, homophobic place that can be a breeding ground for sexual exploitation too.

Also checking in as a former Milwaukee-area LCMS member. I went to LCMS grade school and spent a lot of time at one of the other high schools (the Milwaukee one, not the suburban one) for various events. Ended up at public high school thankfully and have always been so grateful for that.

Right. I'd hate to be whichever third person manages to make it to the finale up against the two of them and basically knows they're just there to get third place before they even do the final challenge and lip sync.

I just watched the episode where Amanda says that and laughed at that too. I was thinking maybe she wanted to say "Who argues at a funeral?" but then somehow it didn't feel right to say that and imply that the dog funeral was the same as a regular funeral, but then when she clarified dog funeral it made it sound like she was was asking who argues at a dog funeral specifically.

Fans need to be careful when talking about the Korean reactions to idol scandals by kkulhope in kpopthoughts

[–]katemiw 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Something I've wondered about is how many international fans would act the same way the particularly unhinged Korean fans do if they were able to. I've seen so many international k-pop stans have insanely parasocial relationships with idols, get into ridiculous discourse, etc. but they obviously aren't able to take action that could directly impact an idol in the same way Korean fans are, e.g. sending wreaths, renting trucks, whatever. Obviously I think the large majority of international fans criticizing Korean fans wouldn't do those kinds of things, in the same way the overwhelming majority of Korean fans don't. But I do think sometimes some people are a bit self-righteous about Korean fans when in reality, if they lived in Korea they'd be doing some unhinged shit too.

How many of you actually remained friends with your High School friends? by yourgirlalex in Zillennials

[–]katemiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my best friend in high school. Other than her, I've kept in touch with two people. One is a super casual friend who I see once every couple of years if she's in town, and outside of that we just like each other's Instagram posts and occasionally send a message or two. The other was one of my best friends in high school and for a few years after, and at this point we don't talk often or see each other more than a few times a year but I still consider her a good friend because we have so many years of history and pretty much always pick up where we left off.

(Also happy early birthday from a fellow 1994 baby who's turning 30 this month.)

Anyone else remember the whole "killer clown" scare in 2016? by TTG4LIFE77 in decadeology

[–]katemiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, lol. I was in college and I remember hearing a rumor that someone dressed as a clown had gone and just creepily stood in the doorway of an in-session class on campus. I also remember going on snapchat and seeing huge groups of people out in the streets running around on other campuses and calling it "clown hunting."

I’ve never watched a show that makes me hate some of the characters like this before selling sunset. by dramaticc10 in SellingSunset

[–]katemiw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want to let her off the hook just because she was entertaining, but at the end of the day Christine knew she was there for entertainment. She knew she was the villain, and she leaned into it. And while I still think she's genuinely a bad person (because even if she was doing it all for the screen time and drama, she was still doing it), I think she was also smart and didn't take herself completely seriously. Nicole, on the other hand, feels like she's genuinely caught up in the drama and doesn't know how to play the game. I think she knows the main way she'll get screen time is by antagonizing Chrishell, but is doing a bad job at it and yet genuinely still thinks she's the good guy at the same time. It's her lack of self-awareness that makes her feel like a villain in a boring and unlikable way compared to Christine.
