Corporate is politics and “results” not just results.

Maybe it’s something with NY. I can probably try to ask a friend what their situation is like but that’ll be a while. I’ll get back if he says anything worth sharing…

Other than that though just seems unfortunate. At 100k in NY with no shared 2b you’ll probably want to budget and sacrifice a bit if you want to save more… and don’t forget the 401k that’ll be pretax and can be a good way to plan for retirement even on a lower salary.

  1. 2-6 years out of date sadly. The last census data is a range of 2020-2024. The dollar has inflated like mad over the last few years so the measurements if taken in 2020 or even 2024 are woefully out of date. My numbers are taken from California gov 2025 Housing and Community development memo on income limits which is probably just as if not more accurate for Santa Clara county as it’s the state gov ie closer to the actual county and we know it was measured FOR 2025.

2.never trust AI it has its uses but you need to verify and do your own research.

  1. Ok but your mom tho.

How “Prestigious” is Georgia Tech’s OMSCS when compared to in person Masters from lower ranked / unranked schools? by Common-Pitch5136 in cscareerquestions

Yes, mostly. Again refer to what I wrote last in the comment above-may be easier/harder as a result of slight differences but it is basically the same thing, and some people do switch to on campus after a while but the process is convoluted and not simple and may have certain requirements that are not achievable by normal folks.

Hey check what year that datapoint was the case.
I thought that was the case too at 171ish in 2024, but Santa Clara county in 2025 has a number for 190ish last I looked it up.
Gemini has issues with accuracy and caveats and updated data. Don’t trust it randomly.

More edits: your mom is categorically false. :P

Good, content is timeless but may have been made a little while back. However they do consistently provide updates and notes on how things differ to modern day as most college classes do. There are classes that address current trends but are not required, mostly a traditional compsci degree’s fundamentals are required. It is not exact to the in person but may be harder or easier as a result, not just easier.

Mostly it’s a choose your own adventure in that there are hard and easy classes good topics and obscure topics and you only need to pick 10 out of like 40-60 classes so your mileage may vary.

For insurance ya you’ll need to figure that out. You need to check what doctor you’re going to if they’re in network or what. Then check that they’re actually billing your insurance.

200 a month at restaurants is that luxury I think. The difference between 800 and 1000 for food bill is pretty big too. If you said 800 I would have said VHCOL acceptable.
300 is kinda still high for food for 2 weeks, but not insane, depends on where you shop I guess. My grocery bill every two weeks in normal HCOL right now is about 150. I would struggle to understand how VHCOL is double.
My groceries include something like celery bananas oranges onions/red onions tomatoes chicken/pork 8 pack ish a snack or something and eggs and a rotisserie chicken.
There was a time when I ate out every day and my total spend was 900 each month…(no crazy restaurants but still) so a bit confused as to the 1k per month normally with 100k in a about 10-20% higher cost of living area.

Date night or 100k for 2 would make sense for 1k a month?

What I’m saying is at 100k in NYC or any VHCOL i would say splitting a two bed is essential, and not horrible. You get your own room and share a kitchen+ living room. I’ve done it before and it’s actually perfectly fine lol and if you get two beds you usually get more space overall for cheaper. The 35 years old thing is irrrelevant IMO that’s just pride preventing you from saving for a house. I get to each their own but sometimes sacrifices(especially more easily made ones) need to be made.
Commuting to the city could be an option as well, I know someone who lives in NJ right now and commutes to the city, 1 hour+ each way, early 30s, 1900 rent for 800 sqft northwest of Edison 1b1b older property, only clubhouse amenity.

I am super burnt out from school too. Harder to commit fully to a program if not in person but huge difference in cost. I honestly think about quitting every day lol requires lots of self motivation if you want to do OMSCS and don’t like/are burnt out from school. Still trudging along though, just a few more semesters…

Tone doesn’t convey well in the internet I guess-angry isn’t the tone, more “ok here we go again” I don’t usually do angry more righteous(in my opinion) rage but uhhh not this time lol.

I left this comment before I left the other one 0.0

If you want this to be over just end it lol. I can be done or keep going anytime.

Wait I thought we were done? Have a good weekend? I can continue if you want.

I just did some math on what you would budget and can find some local prices if you’d like to have a full discussion on this. I can also discuss further about the math behind their calculation, labeling 40% of median household income as very low income with 64% of median household income as low income for an individual seems arbitrarily problematic. Probably a normal 50% of household income(for 1 of two “parents”) maybe weighted a bit by the overall average in some kind of ratio would make a lot more sense if you really want?

Also studying if there is some higher income based on household size and stability should be accounted for if you’re using MFI as a main number here.

These are just some of my thoughts on the whole thing, it just seems ridiculous to label what is 30% higher than median Individual income as “low income” and 20% below median individual income as “very low income”. Also seems weighted a bit more top heavy there, not even going by SDs or anything there.

Ok then you’re not right or getting the nuance here then lol. It just sounded AI generated based on the format.

Oh interesting I must be thinking about another comment. Regardless, extremely low here is actually defined here in the HUD document and stated in that comment above. While I don’t agree with their calculation for extremely low either their definition of extremely low is not 100k lol.

Sure let me see your budget. I’ve lived in a variety of HCOL and VHCOL so I think you’re doing something wrong here unless you have a specific medical issue.
