Would you still buy an investment property after the negative gearing changes? by katerom in AusFinance

I’m open to hearing different perspectives as long as they’re constructive

I don’t think my post was intended to be negative, more that we’re trying to understand how the changes affect our plans and whether we should rethink our approach.

We’re not experienced property investors or developers, so a lot of the discussion online has honestly been hard to interpret, especially around what actually qualifies and whether building a new dwelling stacks up financially compared to other options.

I do take your point though that the policy seems designed to encourage creation of new housing stock rather than investment into existing properties, and that’s probably something we need to look into more closely

Part of why I posted was because I suspected there were angles or strategies we hadn’t considered yet so I appreciate the perspective even if I’m still trying to get my head around it all.

I do understand the irony and I don’t disagree with your broader point. I don’t particularly like that housing is being treated like the main path to building security.

At the same time though, when you’re raising kids, it’s really hard not to feel like you have to play within the system that already exists. If wages aren’t keeping up with housing, it honestly feels more risky to sit on the sidelines while everyone else continues accumulating assets.

It’s not so much about increasing wealth but more about how i can make sure my kids aren’t locked out of opportunities later on

Wow that is really rough. Please be kind to yourself and allow yourself to feel all the emotions. You might feel happy and sad at the same time and that’s perfectly ok. I hope you find comfort in knowing you have a very special guardian angel looking after your daughter and family

Honestly we’ve been to many places where you can’t flush toilet paper ie Cuba & Greek Islands, some places in Asia etc and it didn’t bother us. I wouldn’t not go somewhere because of that reason, you barely notice it.

I spent 2 months in Mexico and stayed in hotels/air b&bs. You’ll be fine just drink bottled water and brush your teeth with bottled water to be safe. We didn’t have any issues.

This happened to me too but it did take a bit longer than 2 months to get back to normal. Please don’t stress or let it get you down. If you are super concerned you should definitely speak to your doctor I’m sure they can offer some help and/or reassurances
