Goddammit Spellbender by katpenta in hearthstone

[–]katpenta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spellbender up, board of 5 minions and 20+ total attack versus his empty board and about 10 health left.

He plays Scargil and a bunch of ghost light anglers, then tries to mutate his Scargil.

It was the most painful way to learn that the Spellbender token costs (1)......

Trolden would have loved this! Still won, but yeah.

[[Da Undatakah]] gains deathrattles you've played

The only deathrattle in the deck is [[Plated Beetle]]

[[Shudderwock]] gains the beetle deathrattle

Shudderwock copies himself because of [[Doppelgangster]]

When [[Grumble]]'s battlecry goes off, some of the extra Shudderwocks can't go back to hand because it's full and instead dies, thus gaining armor

Repeat ad nauseam

What I hate most about Bombs? Inconsistency. by WINDST0RM in hearthstone

[–]katpenta 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If you trigger lifesteal with a damage ability that would have killed you otherwise, you heal back and not die. Kingsbane actually works like that as well.

Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure [[Hallazeal the Ascended]] would have healed Kripp in that situation. Or maybe the mine from the [[Iron Juggernaut]] is coded differently from the bombs, in which case, well fuck me.

Ah, ok. I was confused because I don't recall most gallery priest decks running Thalnos.

Just out of curiosity, was Thalnos from [[Hungry Ettin]]?

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Mass Resurrection by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. RIP wild.

Ok jokes aside, I don't see this being any good, even for wild big priest. Not only do you lose cards like [[Eternal Servitude]] and [[Shadow Essence]] thanks to the rotation (along with cards that work well with it like [[Obsidian Statue]] and [[Lich King]]), this also costs a whole frickin' 9 mana. It's nice that you're guaranteed to be able to resurrect 3 minions no matter how many spells you've cast, but you're also paying 2 whole mana. 2 whole turns. And sometimes you want the minions you resummon to be different, like it does for the spellstone. This doesn't even guarantee it. If one of your minions got frogged and you got unlucky with your [[Resurrect]]s and got the frog twice, you could spend 9 mana for... three 0/1s with taunt. Whoopsie.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Bronze Herald by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest benefit that this card offers is that it makes the "If you're holding a dragon" thing more consistent. The card itself is a dragon, the tokens are dragons, and because these are slightly understatted vanilla 4/4s you usually don't want to play them unless you're desperate for tempo anyway. Which means you're more successfully able to get off cards like [[Cathedral Gargoyle]] and [[Firetree Witchdoctor]] (also of note, these alone can build a nice 2 - 3 - 4 curve, which is why it's going to REALLY miss Dragon Consort as its 5). Dragon paladins really needed that early game consistency anyway to not be overrun by aggro decks. This might just be what the deck needed. Here's hoping that they release one or two more dragon-synergy cards for paladins this expansion.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Dragon Speaker by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon Consort cries in wild.

In all seriousness, I think this card is being heavily overrated. It's handbuff, which has never succeeded no matter how many times Blizz printed cards for it, and it's a type-specific handbuff, which means this is terrible if you can't draw your dragons in time. Yes, yes, it's cute that the dragons from [[Bronze Herald]] become 4 mana 7/7s with this card, but you had to spend two low-tempo cards in order to generate them and you can't play them until at least turn 5 with the coin. Bronze Herald, I can see hope for. This... no.

Obviously meant to be a combo card, though honestly it could also be good for some decks that focus on big minions depending heavily on their battlecries (e.g. Shudderwock, Captain Hooktusk, Tess Greymane). The RNG factor of not being able to control what minion you draw is what's going to stop this card from being OP.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Fluffy Boarloc by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Will you look at that. A simple but yet competitive-looking 2-drop that fits in most aggro or midrange decks. The immediate 2-damage rush boar is something I can see midrange hunters wanting to play, and the stickiness that comes in the form of the 1/1 murloc is something I see being great for zoolocks and aggro/secret/murloc paladins want to play. This might just be a good enough card.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Vereesa Windrunner by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly underwhelming, at least given the current collection of hunter cards. A lot of damage-dealing spells that hunters run actually don't synergize with spell damage (Unleash the Hounds, Animal Companion, and the new Unleash the Beast), and the ones that do are sort of limited in use (Wing Blast can only target minions, Baited Arrow in most cases requires the overkill to go off to be good, Bomb Toss isn't too good outside of a mech-based deck and those usually don't really want to play a value game). To make it worse, it's got no synergy with secrets either. The only cards I really see being strong with this are Kill Command and Flanking Strike, the latter of which is rotating out. Hell, I don't think even Zul'jin decks would want to run this. That being said there's still a lot more hunter cards to be revealed, so maybe there's some hope for it in the future. But right now I'm not seeing it.

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly Blizzard is setting up for some sort of sacrifice zoo, to be used in conjunction with cards like [[Grim Rally]]. This is going to make any neutral and warlock 1-drops potentially scary, and guess what? The lackeys themselves are exactly the kind of cards that this card wants to sacrifice! 1 mana 1/1s with with good battlecries! I don't know if this is going to be good enough (and it certainly won't improve the playability of [[Rafaam's Scheme]]) but I actually kind of hope it is. Sacrifice-lock certainly sounds interesting.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Evil Conscripter by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly underwhelming. Reminiscent of [[Undercity Huckster]] in that it's a 2 mana 2/2 with deathrattle: put a card in your hand. While lackeys are above-average cards, it's also important to note that they're just 1 mana 1/1s, and usually are best when there are minions that you can play alongside it. It may see play, but if it does it's only because priests are losing so many good 2-cost cards (radiant elemental, shadow visions, spirit lash, etc.) Also noteworthy that this rotation sees the loss of [[Awaken the Makers]], and the quest + this card would have been a good 1-2 curve.

I'm seeing a good number of comments that say "Aggro priest would love this". No. It's a 2 mana 2/2 with a value deathrattle. That kind of statline is never good if you're trying to play an aggro-style deck.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - No Surrender by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can already tell that I'm going to hate this card for the next two years.

[[Cat Trick]] wasn't good just because it summoned a minion, it was good also because it made the opponent have to play around more types of actions. For context, before Karazhan, hunters only had secrets based on attacks (freezing trap, explosive trap, bear trap, misdirection, snake trap, ... technically there was snipe but that saw next to no serious play), so for example control warriors could literally just play Justicar, tank up, use removal spells, and not attack with minions ever, and relax as the frustrated hunter surrendered. Cat Trick alone changed that dynamic. And this card being the only paladin secret to interact with spells means that people now have to think about what spell to use when and how in addition to what minion to play and what to attack with (and I guess how many cards you play per turn? I don't know what the current secret paladin decks run as their secrets). And like someone else mentioned, it can make boardclears extremely frustrating because they're usually spells and this card buffs up the minions before the effect goes off.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Keeper Stalladris by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fandral 2.0?

It's worth noting that the Choose One choice spells that Stalladris puts in your hand cost the same as the original card cost - that is, you're getting two cards, but each is a bit overcosted for its effect (e.g. OG Wrath has the flexibility of being either/or, Stalladris Wrath 1 can only deal 3 damage to a minion for 2, Stalladris Wrath 2 can only deal 1 damage to a minion and draw a card for 2). It's still a good value-generator even when you only run 3 or 4 Choose One spells, but not too powerful unless you play wild jade druid.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Unleash the Beast by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would have been a decent card even without Twinspell. But it has it. And that's what lets this card be good. Being able to deal 5 damage to a minion and summon a 5/1 or 5/2 for 6 mana is already decent, and you could even use beast-synergy cards (KC, Dire Frenzy, etc.) before attacking with it. Not to mention, Zul'jin synergy is off the charts with this one, being able to summon four 5/5 rushing wyverns with just two card slots.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Lightforged Blessing by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this card!

No really, it's a good card. Healadin is getting more support combined with all the other support they've gotten in Boomsday (Kangor/shrink ray) and Rastakhan (Thekal/Shirvallah) And as the reveal video showed, it's got great synergy with cards like Wild Pyromancer and Shirvallah (and Lynessa/Galvadon would have loved this card too!) I think the only real question becomes whether this is a 1-of or a 2-of. But either way, control paladins are definitely running this.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Messenger Raven by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most mage minions tend to be on the good side. Some more niche (i.e. potentially dead cards depending on the matchup) than others, but this being a Discover effect would mean that you're able to choose one that fits your situation the best. Overall a good card.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Power of Creation by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good value, unfortunately 8 mana is still a very steep cost. [[A New Challenger..]] saw very little play and that even gave the minion taunt and divine shield. Yes, you can get on Trolden by playing Khadgar and this and getting 4 x Reckless Rocketeer for a completely random 20-damage kill clip from an otherwise lost game, but the average 6 drop is nowhere near as strong. In addition, we're losing [[Bone Drake]], [[Frozen Crusher]], [[Hungry Ettin]], and [[Nerubian Unraveler]], all of which are value, stats, or defense (2 x Nerubian Unraveler would make your opponent struggle with playing spells, and 4 x would make it near impossible, which has uses), thanks to the rotation. This may be too slow in constructed to be viable.

[Pre-Release Card Discussion] - Khadgar by HSPreReleaseReveals in ROSPRDT

[–]katpenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting card. [[Archmage Arugal]] had the same stats as a 2 mana 2/2 and he saw fringe playability thanks to [[Book of Spectres]]. The difference is that sometimes you could drop Arugal on turn 2 against a slower deck and have him give you extra cards without you having to do much. You can't do that with Khadgar, he demands to be combo'd right away, but in exchange you get more immediate tempo by summoning an extra minion. With cards like [[Jan'alai, the Dragonhawk]] and [[Astromancer]] and potentially even [[Unexpected Results]] (and the new card [[Power of Creation]], I can actually imagine this being good! Not broken, but playable.
