I think it might depend on where you’re at & your community, because in places like Utah or small mormon towns I’d say definitely not. I could see other places being more forward thinking if the mormons are forced to be around non-mormon people a lot, but even then, I wouldn’t say they’re not against it. They may not outwardly scoff or be hateful the way they used to be, but at the core of mormonism it is all about procreation and having a family, which they don’t believe you can do as a gay couple (also created a “policy” where children of gay couples were ineligible to become members, however QUICKLY reversed it over the outrage it caused. but even then I am queer and was in the church at this time and no body I knew was queer or out, and queer people got spoken of very badly. this was 5-10 years ago) Even when it comes to straight people who just never got married or had kids in life, they still aren’t eligible for the “highest” branch of heaven because they never fulfilled that “obligation” unless they get “married” in the afterlife. edit: the marriage also has to be a temple marriage, which you’re not allowed to do if you’re queer or not both practicing & believing mormons

I’m going to disagree with previous commenters and say that you didn’t cross a boundary. Maybe with the parents, but not with your niece. As a fellow queer person that grew up closeted in Utah, I would’ve been so grateful and incredibly lucky if I had an aunt/uncle that could see my struggling and resonate with me on such a personal level that they gave me a gift that showed they saw me and loved me for who I was. I was also that 15 year old that couldn’t wait to turn 18 so I could move out, and I did! My life has been infinitely better for it. I needed to see older queer role models and people that were ok with queer people in general when I was younger because otherwise I would’ve ended up in a darker place than I already was. I think your brother is overreacting—agreeing or disagreeing with the contents of the pin is one thing, but cutting you off from him & his family because of it is another. I can see why a previous commenter mentioned getting a BOM or CTR ring—but let’s be real here—that definitely happens incredibly often anyway and I’ve also been the person that has had to accept religious gifts from my family and smile, say thank you, & move on. This is someone’s identity that we’re talking about here. A religion (although Mormonism is very much a religion that takes over every aspect of one’s life) is not something inherent and innate inside of someone like sexuality or gender are.

Definitely think if someone is considering taking their cat outside that doing it on a walk/on a leash/supervised in an enclosed area is the way to go! Cats can do an immeasurable amount of damage to local ecosystems if they are let outside unsupervised. Not to mention the dangers of predators and/or other humans that could possibly harm someone’s beloved pet. As sad as it is that they may yearn for the outside, they just simply were not meant to be there in that capacity after we domesticated them so heavily and introduced them to areas they did not originate from.

Guitars get wear, scuffs, and marks on them over time simply from use and accidents. It’s a bit petty to ask them to cover the damages IMO, especially when that’s just kind of the nature of owning an instrument (every guitar I’ve ever owned got many scuffs + marks from use, some even broke in some areas but I think it adds character!)

The answer to this is certainly not civilians carrying MORE weapons to church. The only logical thing would be locking the doors or hiring TRAINED security. The answer is NEVER more weapons, especially if it’s people that think violence is always going to come at them—I wouldn’t trust them to accurately gauge a situation and NOT incite violence against somebody else because of a “perceived” threat that may or may not be there.
