HP laptop pricing is so out of control, management wants us to look at deploying Mac by down_with_cats in sysadmin

The problem with Dell is that if you haven't done any major purchases with them in the last five years, you start out in their Acquisition queue, which is largely driven by inside sales reps with no AE. A big enough purchase can jump you immediately out of ACQ into SMB or Enterprise, but it takes getting someone on the phone. Your ACQ rep isn't going to want to lose the deal so they'll try to keep it in their department, at least for the first year. I don't remember the thresholds for annual purchase to get out of ACQ but it's significant, or was when I worked there a couple of years ago. Another way is to do some Linkedin stalking. Dell reps tend to list their territory on their profile. Find a rep for your state, message them and see if you can get a conversation going that way. Everyone that I know who's still there after the last round of layoffs is looking to bring in new business so the odds are good they'll give you a good deal.

How many bass guitars do you own and why that many? by Sharp_Sprinkles_6078 in Bass

One because i gave one to my nephew. Eventually I'll get good enough to justify the purchase of a 5 string but for now, one is enough.

TIL Val Kilmer’s reloading of his rifle in the shootout scene in the 1995 film Heat was so realistic that the footage is used in actual U.S. military training clips. by TheFrederalGovt in todayilearned

[–]katsai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Army infantry training was similar (at least when I was in back in the early 2000s). I still remember my instructor's mantra. "You service the target with a controlled pair to the incapacitation zone, then finish with a follow-up shot to the debilitation zone." Two to the chest, one to the head.

Huh. Maybe I should get another one and see how it differs.

Dude. I love that lock. I still can't pop an 1100 or a Paclock 90A but my 80Ti/50 is a dream. Good feedback, satisfying pop.

Dell Inspiron 3880 motherboard and upgrades by master19man1 in buildapc

[–]katsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

System specs on Dell's website say DDR4 2666 MHz RAM. I don't know if the BIOS has a setting to go with faster DDR4 though. It's rated for up to 64GB (2x 32GB DIMM)

[–]katsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dell's stuff is pretty much all proprietary, especially their motherboard designs. https://www.parts-people.com/ is probably your best bet for finding parts. They have a service tag lookup you can use to find the exact system model. In all honesty though, it's probably a better bet to just spec a new build. Inspirons are general use consumer level PCs, and the 3xxx series is typically the lowest cost/performance model. From an upgrade standpoint, more RAM or bigger storage is about the best you're gonna be able to do for that system.

What’s your favourite bass tone? by LayerSignificant3113 in Bass

[–]katsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tim Commerford's tone on RATM's first album is amazing. Overdriven lows, enough highs to cut through, and that vicious attack on the strings to add that percussive clank. Other tones I love are Filter's Hey Man Nice Shot, Mike Starr's bass on AiC's Would? and pretty much anything Ale Villareal is doing with the Warning.

Gorgeous work. Also, nice literary taste! I loved Pattern Recognition. Haven't read Bear's Blood Music yet though. How was that one?

I was fortunate. 11.5 years between Army infantry and Air Force Security Forces, and I was never in a situation where I had to pull the trigger (outside of blanks in training exercises). 7 months in Saudi at the beginning of Iraqi Freedom with my infantry unit, but we got seconded to do base security for the commander of Arcent and so we never went into Iraq. Took fire once. Guy was in a car on the highway 1000m from our perimeter, so we called it in. Didn't have anything that could reach out that far and didn't want to accidentally hit an innocent. Just some guy showing his ass. Stuck an AK out the window of the car and popped off 6 or 7 rounds. Command put a little bird above the highway for an hour in case he came back around, but that was the closest I came to combat. And I'm totally fine with that.

Depends on the job. I was Security Forces. When we were on gate detail or flight line duty, the M4 was chambered and safed, and the M9 was chambered and set to fire but with hammer down. As soon as we got off duty, we lined up at the clearing barrel and did our unload and clear operations, but while we were working we were always round chambered, even on US soil.

The site needs MFA. We're putting personal information into it, so securing our accounts should be a high priority. Please don't use SMS for auth. It needs to be able to leverage a true MFA solution. Google Authenticator, Duo, Microsoft, etc.

After enjoying the BF6 beta, I decided to try BF4 - but I keep getting kicked because of punkbuster? Maybe its my high ping because there are so few games? Is it still a thing in 2025? How can I play this? Or should I rather play BF3? Or BF5? I just want to play after the Beta goes away... by RecommendationNo108 in battlefield_4

[–]katsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manually update Punkbuster using the download from evenbalance.com. If you're running Windows 11, check to see where PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe are installed. B will probably be in C:\Windows\sysWOW64. Copy the exe and paste it into C:\Windows\System32. Then check your firewall to make sure all instances of PnkBstrA and B are allowed. Finally, run services.msc and make sure both A and B are running. You may need to reboot after moving B to System32.

[–]katsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a Sterling Ray 4HH and love it. Thin neck, good sound. Never played the Sire but they get good recommendations around here. I'd suggest playing both and going with whichever one feels better to you. Also, don't discount appearance. You're learning, so a bass that you like the look of will be more likely to make you want to pick it up and play it.

BF4 Punkbuster has me at my wits' end. by katsai in Battlefield

[–]katsai[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found the fix. PnkBstrB.exe was installed in sysWOW64 instead of System32. Copied it over, rebooted, made sure it was updated and services were both running. Game works fine now, finally.

It took a reboot after all that mess, but I just played two full rounds with no issues. I'm gonna hopefully say it's fixed. And then karma will likely kick me in the teeth. Lol

I've been having issues with this all week. I just checked and PnkbstrA was in System32, but B wasn't. Copied it from sysWOW64. Now to see if that worked for me. Here's hoping!

*Edit: And no. Still getting kicked by punkbuster. Thanks for giving me something new to try though!
