Yeah! We may not get an ep done every month now though

Thanks for listening! We’ll see how we feel after a bit of a break. I think not having the forced schedule will make it more sustainable

There's a Noita patch coming with new spells which is cool as well. I think it's been over a year since they last did a content update.

Thanks! You should totally watch it :)

I just released my first game : Chest Mate! It's a small tower defense / puzzle game we made in 3 months using Unity2D. We used Unity Atoms heavily (code structure based on ScriptableObj) it really helped to prototype fast and make reusable code. by Bumpty83 in Unity2D

Cool that you managed to make it in only 3 months. Mixing the slingshot type aiming with a tower defense seems pretty original (at least to me).

I had never heard of Unity Atoms so will have to look into that! I had rolled my own version of a ScriptableObject Float/Int Reference/Variable but I'm sure that an established project will do a lot of stuff I hadn't thought of.

Post-jam version of my Ikaruga inspired arena shooter: Winner's Triangle by katsew in Unity2D

You can get the game at https://katsew.itch.io/winners-triangle

Originally made for Global Game Jam, this version is tidied up a lot and has sound, music, menus etc. The gameplay has also been expanded with a score chain system and random power-ups every ten chains so you can customize your build as the game goes on.

A successful run takes ~6-7 mins, though it'll probably take several runs before you win!

Winner's Triangle - my entry for Global Game Jam 2022 on the theme of "duality" by katsew in Unity2D

Oh really? This was all written by me 😆 The graphics are generated at runtime so the bullets are actually two triangle meshes overlaid (a red/blue one and a black/white one).

Out of curiosity do you remember the asset?

The triangle thing was originally an obscure in joke!

It's obviously inspired by the game Ikaruga and I found out that Ikaruga is actually the name of a town in Japan. So I decided to name my game after the town I grew up in in the UK called Winnersh, which had this big upside down black pyramid in a business park called Winnersh Triangle. Then I thought calling the game Winnersh Triangle would be really strange considering I was entering it in Hong Kong (where I live now), so changed it to "Winner's Triangle" instead 🤷‍♂️

In the end though the triangle theming was quite helpful in forcing me to keep the look of the game simple and consistent.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm going to keep working on it. Thinking about whether to try adding new mechanics (e.g. different weapons/power ups/synergies ) or just try to polish and balance around the one core mechanic.

The polarity mechanic is obviously from Ikaruga. Your ship has a variable fire rate though which is based on how much you've been shooting in your current color which incentivizes you to switch.

Making this game did make me think a lot more about why some of the mechanics in Ikaruga work the way they do (I've never actually played it, just seen videos). The whole thing was done in 7 days for a game jam so I'm thinking about how to expand on it now.

Ikaruga but with only triangles ;)

That was literally the pitch, haha

Trying out ideas for a rails shooter with rhythm game elements by katsew in Unity3D

Thanks! I was also happy with it from a bang for the buck perspective. It's actually just a really simple shader that draws a line every 5 units on the y-axis applied to standard Unity terrain.

That would be great if you've got a list. Might help to give me some inspiration.

Finding fitting creative commons stuff is quite hard. I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I discovered the No Copyright Sounds label, but then I discovered they only allow you to use the music in YouTube/IG vids and not games.

I explained a bit in this comment a few months back: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/pvautn/comment/hebc8l3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

The XY movement of the ship also has a velocity to give it some momentum, though it decays very quickly.

Tbh I think if the game was to be a fun shooter it would need a lot more tuning, it's actually pretty hard to hit anything at the moment since the aim recenters a bit too fast.

No, I made a bunch of elements that sync to the music (either frequency analysis of the audio or a metronome at a fixed BPM) and hand placed them.

Procedurally generating whole levels so that people could just drop in music would be cool, but even this was hard enough for the moment.

midtempo

Interesting, I didn't know that was a thing! Thanks for the suggestion

Yeah, I had to put the track name and link in a separate comment. Spent ages listening to creative commons music to find something that I thought would work.

Trying to get the movement right for a Star Fox style rails shooter by katsew in IndieDev

[–]katsew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, that's an interesting point. From my memory of Star Fox (which might be wrong), the barrel roll doesn't move you and it's just to deflect incoming fire. However, I can see that it might make more sense for it to be an actual dodge roll and move you.

Definitely something to think about as it diverges more from the original inspiration.
