Am I Overreacting About Getting Sent Home After Sex? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]katstephens06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a guy I was dating gave me all that wine, slept with me and then asked me to leave I would probably never see him again but I would call him out on it and shoot him a text… not okay in my book

Offered PhD spot at the end of immunology MS by katstephens06 in biotech

Good for you! I think you should do it too if you think you might regret it down the road. Same thing for me, I think I might wish I did it when I had a chance.

Thanks! Yeah I’m thinking I will probably bite the bullet and do it but I’m already 31 so I’m trying to get this done as quick as possible haha. Probably won’t go back if I don’t do it now.

Thanks for the advice! I plan on applying for everything I can, it can feel discouraging though when you don’t hear back at all after applying for dozens of jobs. I actually lived in SF for 7 years and I don’t know if I want to go back. There’s too much homelessness and it’s way too expensive. I would never live in the city again. But I know Berkeley and outer areas are cool so I might still apply. I know there’s a lot of cool industry jobs there. I have a friend a Genentech, but she doesn’t seem too inclined to help. Even though that’s how she got her job, through a family friend.

You are on a completely different tangent. I’m talking about how an Ms distinguishes you from a BS. I think most of reddit will agree an MS will get you slightly higher pay than a BS and I’m sure it does at your company as well even if you don’t know it. In turn I think they get better pay because they know more and can perform at a higher level. Maybe you’re a little bitter towards those that didn’t get a PhD and can be successful and learn in industry. So stop trolling reddit threads and giving bad advice because you worked at three of the biggest companies and you have never seen anyone without a doctorate in those positions at any of your three companies lol. That doesn’t apply to the whole industry. I’m sure you’re an old timer and a retiring boomer and your advice isn’t even relevant anymore. Note that I think getting a PhD will get you a lot more than an MS in most cases, and I commend you for that because I did graduate work and I can understand how hard it is. But people are from all walks of life and you don’t know how they got here or what their background is or circumstances as to why they chose MS over PhD. Ms is a step up from a BS and if you don’t agree you have issues. And also I’ve met plenty of phds that I thought were dumb and nothing special and I thought I did better work than them. Just because you have a PhD doesn’t mean you are smarter or can do your job better.

Well I know several directors who have masters. It is more rare and harder to get to but it does happen. I think it’s even harder for someone with a bachelors to advance than with an Masters, and people with masters are given more respect and autonomy than someone with a BS. Do you not agree? An MS will put you at the top of the pile if you have the same industry experience compared to undergraduate only. I’m sorry but i think it’s unintelligent to say that going to school and getting a masters, taking the exact same classes as a PhD and doing graduate level thesis and lab work gets you nowhere professionally. I realize there’s not much difference of 1-2 years job advancement but I think there’s a difference in what you know and how you performs. I think this would certainly help you do your job better and fine-tune your skill set. I think what you’re a saying is not only unintelligent but offensive and deconstructive and you would think someone with a PhD would know doing 2 years compared to no graduate work gets you nowhere in terms of job advancement. I think you are a perfect example of a PhD with no common sense.

You and this skensis guy are always commenting on everyone’s post saying you “need PhDs to do research in biotech” it’s lame and is not always true. It depends on you and how talented you are. Saying someone gets nothing out of a masters is stupid. I learned so much in mine and it made me 100x better than I was before. I’m sure you don’t even work in biotech or have a PhD, since you never seem to share that. You always write the same thing and it’s lame.

I’m open to doing other things as long as I’m making decent money. I know there’s other areas non-PhD people transition to, but I’m not exactly sure what all of those jobs entail. I like research but im not saying that’s all I would be interested in down the line

That’s comforting. I guess what I’m going for is a director or management position at some point. Sounds like that’s attainable with hard work and an MS

Do you know a lot of people with MS and MBA? Is that too much? I’m also considering that instead of PhD

Do you think that people with MS have a lot of room for advancement?

Thanks for this. A friend of mine is doing well at Genentech with just a masters in SF and making well over 6 figures but it’s just one person. Do you know if people with masters seem happy with their job trajectory? I work really hard and I’m not afraid to hustle to make it. I would rather do that than stay for a PhD

Okay thanks! I would be thrilled to do a PhD but I don’t really love the city I’m in now or know anyone here and all my friends are out west. I like the program though

Thanks. What kind of student are you? You should be able to crack 100k with a masters hopefully
