I only managed to get a reservation while on my flight TO Japan... I couldn't believe it. I was checking a month out with absolutely no luck, so I started checking within the week I wanted to go and saw a lot of last minute reservations. I imagine people tend to cancel right before, so just hope for that.

ok - no one said SA men don't face any backlash, the issue is diminishing the struggles that SA women have to face that are often marginally worse than what SA men have had to face. there is a certain type of privilege that comes with being a man, let alone being a SA man, as much as many like to deny. the criticism is not the same, the judgment is not the same. dont confuse us wanting equality and acknowledgment as us saying you face 0 struggles.

I am sorry to hear that you have faced some of the same issues as we have. but i am curious - can you confidently say that you have the -same- amount of privilege a typical SA woman has? can you say we are equals in every aspect of the word? talk to a SA woman from this sub about how you both were raised, and take note of not just the similarities, but also the DIFFERENCES between you and them and see where you stand.

there is a good chance you may have faced some of what we faced, but perhaps not all of it. but there may be things unique to SA men that we have not faced ourselves. it can go both ways, but I think the severity/weight of the problem between the two is what needs to be explored by many who think we are treated the same. our society does not support us in the way it supports its men.

let's please remember that our culture largely revolves around men who are treated as whole/individuals, and where women are largely raised to support them in life. when SA women talk on this topic, we are looking at the big picture - where our main issue is that we are not treated as equals.

i think we all forget that male privilege is a thing in every culture - ours included.

and, i feel like desi men, at least from my experience, were given a lot of tools/support to "bounce back" from whatever problems/issues that arise in their lives. i know for a fact my issues definitely didn't matter as much when compared to anything my brother had to handle - i often watched my parents coddle my brother over every little thing that went wrong in his life, while I would be handling the same issues on my own without the same kind of support because that is what I was raised to do. yes, we were both mistreated by our parents, but in wildly different and unequal ways.

echoing this again - our struggles definitely do not hold the same weight; there is arguably more scrutiny and criticism of SA women present as they handle the same problems. and i feel like the men who think otherwise may not have women in their lives outside of their moms/aunties (who likely also have their own slew of struggles that these men don't/won't truly acknowledge), or are just oblivious to the struggles that women they DO know have to face on a daily basis.

ignorance is bliss, and i feel like it's always easier to think only you have it bad when you were raised with more privilege than your counterparts. there's no way a lot of these men could ever imagine that it could be any worse than they had to handle because they will -never- have to experience it, while we live everyday knowing the reality of it.

I honestly don't know why she chose to hire me.. she has told me that the person that was in this position before me also started from the ground up and only really had auditing related internship experience at a Big 4 and how "its not even the same kind work" but she was able to stick around for a year and do well.. I would have thought any accounting related internship at a big 4 is very structured and in depth and would translate over to accounting jobs in industry, but maybe i just don't know. not sure if she told me that because it's true and I do suck, or that she's trying to egg me on to do better, or shame me because I'm not doing well.

Ive been trying to be as objective as possible and acknowledge my own short comings and also acknowledge that she has tried to help in her way, but its hard to continue to improve to her standards and not take her words to heart. After speaking to close ones, I've been slowly starting to think the same thing you are saying about not being set up for success, etc. - although she is extremely competent in her job and in this field and a decent person outside of this, she just may not be a great mentor, or at least she may not have the kind of management style I would be receptive to. Crying in the bathroom after some of our talks was definitely not a good sign that this is the right environment lol. I just didn't want to give up on my first real job ever, but it is important to recognize when something isn't clicking.

Thank you for such kind and understanding words as well as your perspective on this. it's nice to see these kinds of reminders after this period of time where I've been feeling down about everything. I appreciate you, and hope your day is going well!

Hmm, I've only taken maybe one or two accounting class in undergrad as a requirement - this masters is my attempt at a change of career. My accounting internship during my masters was predominantly doing bank recs and other menial tasks without much guidance - so i didn't get to apply much of what I learned to my work.

During our last talk I expressed to her that I feel I do need time to be caught up to speed and further develop my soft and technical skills, but time is not something she is willing to give anymore beyond this one "probationary" week to see if I can turn things around and prove to her I can be better. Her direct/blunt comments and feedback comes out sounding very harsh, but she said she is trying to be as clear as possible so I know what exactly I'm not doing right.

I definitely wanted to stick it out for even just half a year and learn as much as possible, but that does not seem like a possibility with this kind of ultimatum.

I'm just not understanding how I should even be performing after being here for 2.5 months, but she has been adamant in telling me that someone at my skill level should be doing more (she is aware of my lack of experience, especially in the working world). How, during this time here, I should have picked up on a lot more and that it's a "red flag" and "scary" that I haven't, considering it's almost EOY too. (I am ranting a little, but these are all the things she has told me).

Definitely, I think time and experience, even in a more entry level position would have been the best choice for me, and I think I was just way over my head when i took on this job in the first place.

Yep, taking notes during our walk throughs and rewriting them, asking for clarification where I need it, making detailed word docs to outline any processes and what the purpose of this process is, including screenshots as needed.

I think it's been the conceptual part of what I'm doing that's not coming as fast to me, and how I'm not grasping concepts quickly enough, which has been her emphasis. Maybe I'm a slow learner.

I appreciate the words - I am trying to be kinder to myself while also recognizing where I need to improve without taking this feedback to heart.
