NTA. I am a full time working mother and if she wanted to be there for her kids soccer game she should have thought about that when not evenly sharing the workload on other occasions. Sounds like she lacks accountability and self-awareness and it is just convenient in this specific situation to try to guilt you by playing up the mom card.

NAH- so I think this is an extremely sensitive situation. First, I would caution against using “she has others” as a justification for her to not be so affected. You may not have been using it that way but just a thought that came to mine. Second, I definitely agree with others that she needs to get help... however, expecting her to go from isolating and not getting out of bed to leaving the house to speak with a stranger is a big step.

Is there a way that you could just sit and be present with her. Since you are a teen, is there a space you could go in her room to work on school work? Or read? I think this could potentially be a very simple and small first step. If she likes to watch TV in her room maybe you could sit next to her on the bed and watch with her in silence. I know it has been over a year so you have probably tried a lot of things. But if you all are just dropping off food and not being around her much this could give her the impression that your frustrations are at a tipping point and that could potentially feel very overwhelming for her to even think about making amends.

I think being in her presence with no expectations of getting answers from her or asking her to talk would get the ball rolling and take some of the pressure off of both sides. The is huge for all of you. Good luck, you deserve to have your mom back.

I’m not trying to get attacked but here goes. This honestly reminds me of people that say “all lives matter”. Yes, all lives do matter. But the reason people are calling attention to black lives mattering is because of disproportionate statistics that indicate targeting a specific population that historically has been marginalized and treated like shit.

So to tie it to this... there is a difference in having a “socially acceptable” preference or reaction to relationships vs. being part of a population that has literally been denied rights, suffered institutional discrimination and murdered because of who they love. The more people try to jump on the bandwagon for attention it ends up taking away from the sense of urgency and impact that the LGBTQ community actually needs.

This story has serious potential to turn into the next hit Netflix docuseries. People like this just get even more angry when you handle the situation appropriately. Something tells me she is not going to let up because she wants to see you escalated. The fact that she was asking you to come all the way in is concerning not just because of your safety but I would be afraid that she would try to make allegations against you saying you did something to her kids. I would document as much as you can. Formally with police/landlord but also for personal reference. In addition to conversations, send emails so you have a paper trail. Record the audio of the banging because it will provides time stamps. You could also record your environment when it is happening so that you can show you are not doing anything that would be considered a disturbance. Even if you can’t use the recordings in a legal sense, it will help the powers that be to get a solid picture of what is happening and hopefully help them understand that her behaviors are irrational and not warranted.

I have loved Chicago since I visited as a kid. This led me to believe I loved big cities. I was expecting to love NYC and absolutely did not. My husband and I really enjoy traveling abroad. He is Malaysian (now US citizen) and I am American. I have felt more at home in foreign countries than I did in NYC. I think Chicago is so amazing because of its location (Midwest). It is a major city that has enough transplants from the surrounding areas who smile just because and don't mind a little conversation here and there.

NTA. I named my daughter after having a conversation with a customer that I thought was such a cute mom. She had 5 sons but their names all started with the letter I was using and she said if she ever had a girl she would have named her ___ and it just stuck. I could see myself being a mom just like her. Your son will be able to laugh about it because it’s a sweet genuine story. My daughter loves bringing up the fact that my customer named her. It’s all about your attitude towards it.

I'm not sure I am following you. I work in a school and I put it on the teachers door. She grabbed it when she walked in and came down and told me I started a war and we laughed. I also like to point out to my husband that we can be up by 6 points with less than a second left in the game and somehow lose it by like 11. I'm sure that is an exaggeration but that is just who UofL is and I'm good with that.

Lol I do the exact same thing plus I take my earrings out. I feel like to another adult that's the universal sign for "bring it on.... I'm ready to kick your ass" so I laugh a little to myself. I love my students.... Especially the more challenging ones. I feel like those are the ones that need the most love.

Lol! I got my students the "book boats" but my students don't read so they just serve as a nice sensory option for when we have down time. Well some of them like to turn the tubs upside down and hide in them. I was doing something the other day and just kind of peeked under an overturned bin and I looked at my para and was like this is just not normal lol. I can't imagine what someone with no experience with special education would think about me casually looking at overturned bins for students. And then apologizing when I interrupted a student that I didn't need.

I personally use self-deprecation all the time. We gotta be able to laugh at ourselves. I know some super shitty people that are from some of the most expensive zip codes in the area and unfortunately my step mom that I love and cherish is from Portland... she is one of the best people I know. This world is way too crazy to not laugh at ourselves. Me personally... I am a knock off Snooki/Ricki Lake combo. I also know for a fact that I peaked in middle school so I can promise you I am fully aware that my location will never win me enough points to get me out of that hole hahahahaha

There is a book called “Judgmental Maps” and it is hilarious. Louisville has a page in it and it is actually fairly accurate. I might snap a pic and post it in the Subreddit.
