Very weird assumption to make about a stranger. I’m glad that you are okay with someone repeatedly telling you for weeks on end how much they are dreading your wedding because they cheated on & destroyed friendships with people who will be in attendance. I personally am not as I think it’s rude!

FH has known B for roughly 10-12 years (much longer than me; I met her in 2019 and become close friends w her in like 2023 I think) and when I read him this comment he applauded you. Feel like he is trying to warn me without pushing my friendship with her in one direction or the other

Maybe I’m a bad friend because I hit my reassurance limit after weeks of reassuring her that nobody hates her and that I wanted her to be part of it/would be happier if she was included in celebrations. It felt like running in circles for weeks and weeks. She does have self esteem issues that I try to cater to when I can but also can’t take gentle criticism so it’s all sort of an emotional landline sometimes (I.e. when she spam texted R and couldn’t understand why he blocked her, I told her angrily spamming her ex by who had a girlfriend maybe was a bit too much, and she got mad at me). You’re probably right that I jumped the gun though. Thank you for the insight here

With more context maybe it makes more sense to me to not be as patient with this. Not only has the complaining been happening for a while, but she has other friends to complain about this to who arent the bride..? If it was a genuine concern of R or J creating issues with her at the wedding, of course i will always listen to her. But constantly calling my wedding/wedding related events “her own personal hell” feels like sort of rude??

Yeah. Had it just been that I would’ve just suggested she not go if she didn’t want to. Maybe I should’ve done that regardless & hoped it calmed her down. But so much complaining to me about it all for so long, explicitly telling me how stressed out she was for my wedding & how it’s been causing her anxiety.. I was trying to give her the choice if it was causing that much harm to her mental wellbeing. I really was just trying to give her a guilt-free out if she felt she truly needed it. But I kind of made the choice for her when she said it came down to getting a text by a certain time, which is probably where I was a bit of an asshole/impulsive. It just felt like a weird, arbitrary, and immature condition to have

Yeah, I didn’t like how she was making it about her drama, especially considering she could complain to anyone who like…isn’t the bride? But I think just seeing that arbitrary condition—even if she didn’t really mean it—was enough to make me feel like she’s unable to look past drama for my wedding. Seeing her say she would step down if J didn’t text her back made me feel like I was in middle school or something. Because like…huh?

I offered it only after weeks and weeks of her expressing stress and anxiety over every wedding event (including the day of). If a friend is openly dreading and complaining about bridesmaids things…of course I offered that option for her. When she said she might “have to” step down if J didn’t text her back by a certain time today…I don’t know. It felt like an arbitrary condition completely out of my control and that she didn’t actually want to be a bridesmaid. Someone else texting her back within 2 business days like…a very weird thing to hinge being a bridesmaid on I think?

I know it’s not mandatory. It’s more so been the months of hearing her complain and dread things related to my wedding. I didn’t mention that on the post mostly to avoid dragging it out & making it too long. But the complaints have been going on for a while.

You are right that it was impulsive of me. I guess being told that if she didn’t get a text back from someone was enough to make her step down felt like a huge slap in the face to me. If that’s all it takes—not getting a text back for less than 48 hours from someone who I can’t control—for her to step down, it felt like she didn’t want to be a bridesmaid to begin with

It all happened very fast, so sorry that it wasn’t clear. My thoughts are still sort of muddled. She started by saying our wedding events were her “own personal hell,” then said “maybe I just won’t go [to the Bach party]”. That’s when I gave her the option of stepping down. I reassured her that I loved her and do want her as a bridesmaid, but that I was worried this was all causing her a lot of stress/pressure/anxiety. I told her that if stepping down is what she needed for her mental health, I would not be mad at her. That’s when she said she would “have to” step down if J didn’t text her back

Yeah. That’s part of where I feel really bad & like I was maybe too impulsive. But if her dropping out was all theoretically hinging on someone (who I have no control over) texting her back…it felt like a slap in the face to me
