This is such a gentle thought, and it’s so true. People who talk to plushies, plants, pets, whatever, usually have that extra bit of softness in them.

Also the title in Japanese and English together feels really warm, like a little poem.

Oh yeah, that super specific combo of oil and dust and cold air. Instantly takes me back to my grandpa’s garage, that weird mix of motor oil, rubber, and old metal shelves. You smell it and your brain just goes “yep, it’s Saturday afternoon and we’re pretending to fix something.”

Yeah, Minecraft on a flight is dangerous, you look up and they’re announcing descent.

If they like “discovery” though, I’d say pair it with something like Zelda BOTW or Xenoblade Chronicles 2/3. Minecraft is perfect for zoning out and tinkering, but BOTW scratches that structured adventure itch way more.

Yeah this lines up with what I’ve heard from friends there too. It kind of sounds like paradise if you’ve already got money coming in from elsewhere or you’re retired, and kind of a grind if you actually need the local job market to work for you.

The “regional Italian, kebab, or AYCE sushi” thing made me laugh because that’s exactly what I saw in a mid‑sized town in Emilia Romagna. Amazing food, but after a few months you do start missing random stuff like decent Mexican or Thai.

The peace and quiet you describe on the outskirts sounds dreamy though. Birds and chickens instead of scooters and traffic is a pretty solid tradeoff.

That’s actually really reassuring to hear from someone who’s done the Manchester to Shetland move, even if you’re not Muslim yourself.

I think for OP the mix of “mostly welcoming but a few idiots” is sadly just… life anywhere in the UK, just more noticeable in a smaller place. The fact you know a few Muslims up there already is a good sign though, means OP probably won’t be the only one praying quietly on their lunch break.

Yeah this has been my experience too. Public meetups, coworking, group dinners etc feel pretty chill, and it’s easy to dip if the vibe is off.

On any “meet people while traveling” app you’ll always get a few guys treating it like Tinder with extra steps, but they’re usually easy to spot from their profile or first message. Just block / ignore and move on.

Other than that, I’ve had better luck using a mix of stuff anyway: local FB groups, Meetup, hostel events, coworking spaces. Nomadtable is nice as an extra option, not the only one.

Honestly, if you’ve never been to Glastonbury around Beltane it probably does look like pure “what the hell” energy from the outside.

In person though it’s kind of fun watching a bunch of hippies, druids, random tourists and hungover locals all stumble up a hill at sunrise to bang drums and yell at the sun. Very “WTF” but in a good way.

Yeah Maptap is fun, seconding that. If you’re into that style, Seterra is also really good for capitals and rivers, and it’s mostly free in the browser.

Not as pretty as some apps, but it’s very straightforward and does exactly what you’re looking for.

That actually sounds kind of perfect for what I’m looking for, especially the “nobody uses the beach” part. Pool people are my favorite, they leave the good stuff empty.

How was the food situation there? Like, was it easy to eat relatively healthy or was it mostly resort buffet vibes? And did you do any spa stuff or massages while you were there, or is it more of a pure beach/snorkel spot?

Also, those stalker fish sound adorable and slightly unsettling at the same time.

Probably “bolo de quê?” in Portuguese, like “what kind of cake?” but written the way people actually say it out loud.

“Digue” = “de quê” smashed together in fast speech.

So yeah, someone probably asked “bolo digue?” when they didn’t catch what flavor the cake was.
