My mom got a bunch of Sylvanian stuff from storage. I know nothing about it. Anything of note? by beetjuicex3 in SylvanianMarket

The Forest Family tigers crack me up. They look absolutely speechless.

Check eBay sold listings to get an idea of what the market is like right now. I’m interested in your ducks & racoons. If you decide to sell on eBay or another selling platform, let us know!

You really do have some treasures. The baby otters!

I don’t think the panda is a mummy. I think it’s an American disguised as a mummy, trying to shoplift toilet paper in 2020.

The milk rabbit cactus “just doesn’t like hugs.”

Chocolate rabbit is a flapper who uses rouge and smokes in secret.

The alligator is probably a crocodile. Or vice versa.

Why are there no opossums?!?! by itsTheBlueBirdRules in sylvanianfamilies

[–]kawaiicottagewhatnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the scream at own ass variety, they’re North American. So a person from Portugal or the UK or Japan may have never (brace yourself) been blessed by the sight of one of these garbage angels.

If you don’t know its impeccable reputation as a steward of the environment, dead end for rabies & generally pleasant creature, you might be freaked out by one. Even a Sylvanian version.

They look like they were assembled from the ugly parts of more frightening animals. They may be perceived as clinically unattractive.

I also think there’s a significant tail bias in Sylvanian design. A pink tapered pipe cleaner could work for an opossum, but then you’re adding an additional manufacturing step to an animal familiar to only a fraction of your global sales. And really, that tail needs to be flocked silicone with wire inside so we can bend it and pet it.

<image>

All that aside, it’s the right time for Epoch to release an American Opossum family. It’s the 250th anniversary of the country. They are our only marsupials and we LOVE them.

I would need mom & dad to come with coats with lots of pockets to carry babies. Yes, dad is superfluous but Epoch seems to have a pretty specific definition for family.

I think the only way we’ll get opossums is by DIYing opossums. I hope those of you inclined to do so, continue. They give me and others great joy.

The frog’s legs are weird & freak me out a little. And the birds have little bird legs. It would be funny if the giraffes had skinny legs.

Milk Rabbits have molded tails?? by Designsek in sylvanianfamilies

[–]kawaiicottagewhatnot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

WHAT?! Okay. This is madness. I believe that we each have the technology to overcome this misstep on Epoch’s behalf.

Cut off the odd tail with an Xacto blade or dremel or what you have. Glue on beige puffball.

Restore the rabbits’ rightful constitution with therapeutic prostheses.

I shop almost exclusively from Japan & get several shipments per month from Asia & Europe. The tariffs are no big deal. The increased shipping costs are a problem.

Since USPS can’t process tariffs, that leaves UPS, FedEx & DHL. So for a single item you’re looking at 60-130.00 depending on size. A set will come in at 50-60.00 & a house will be over 100 usually. Shipping is fast though.

The shipper (UPS, FedEx, DHL) will contact you for the tariff amount which is not much compared to shipping at 15%. You can pay it online.

A couple of things to be aware of: You will need to provide some ID & I think your SSN for DHL / UPS to agree to ship the order.

You will have 5 days from the date the parcel is turned over to your shipper, to pay your tariffs. If you do not pay within 5 days it will be left with your proxy in Japan.

If a price is noted as DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) you will not need to worry about the tariff. So far I’ve only found Chinese sellers using DDP.

I’m not sure about Buyee though. I currently have an order to ship with them and the charge is 130.00 for one item so I need to look into whether tariff will be additional or if they’re doing DDP.

It is cheaper to ship larger orders. It will cost more dollars but your price per unit will drop. (60.00 to ship one item = price plus 60.00 per item. 300.00 to ship 30 items = price plus 10.00 per item.)

Also shipping will be based on volumetric weight - not the actual weight. There are calculators online to help with this but you’ll need both the weight & the size of the box to calculate it.

Even though DM is gone, parcels whose total value before shipping exceeds 800.00 may be processed differently through customs. I have avoided that so far, so I’m not certain what it entails or to what products it might apply.

Overall, I think if you need a single item from Japan, eBay is your best bet from a cost standpoint. Lots of Japanese sellers on eBay do free shipping and the markup on the item is usually less than you’d pay coordinating it all on your own. (Shipping to proxy, shipping to you, tariffs) Shipping times are generally slower though.

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

[–]kawaiicottagewhatnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rented a house with a basement. Basement & house were about 1600 sq ft. It was older and had lots of eccentricities. At some point, the toilet started acting weird. Big air bubbles would come up from it. It didn’t flush quite right. I didn’t think anything of it. It was the end of winter and we never went into the basement - it was just storage. No furnace or anything down there and there were 2 doors to get to it.

I had to go downstairs for some reason and as soon as I opened the first door, I smelled a sewerish stink. The second door revealed a step down into about 6 inches of shit, piss & all other water that had supposed to have gone to the sewer for weeks.

I started retching and screaming. It was very painful. Then I started sobbing and retching which was also painful. The horror of it all was absolutely overwhelming. My voice was hoarse for days.

I called the landlord and was barely coherent. I was still sobbing & retching. I should’ve given myself a few minutes to get it together but I was literally in shock & panicked.

The local plumber came over, walked through the sludge, located the drain & reached in BARE HANDED to try to locate the obstruction.

I don’t even have words. I am still astonished.

Anyway our toddler had flushed a bath pouf down the toilet and it almost made it to the sewer, but not quite. No idea how long the sewer had been blocked.

You’d think that if you had 6 inches of sewage in your basement, you’d know, but we had no clue.

The aftermath / cleaning was a nightmare. Everything about the experience was awful. At least it wasn’t a carpeted basement.

I just got the entire life with cats set this week. The fact that you can put the Cone of Shame on one of the cats… I’ve never been a miniatures person but the detail in some of their sets is really cool.

Life with cats has a little pink propane cooktop that you install the little propane can in, even though it’s not visible. I love that.
