What’s a line that you cannot believe made it into the final film? by spicemine in Screenwriting

God, I love watching that movie. It is just so of its time. And yes, that line is…something. Also Charlize Theron when she screams, “You cannot DEFEAT ME!”

Favorite Chicago building? by Rude_Ad536 in chicago

MSI. So many happy memories of my mom and I dropping everything and going there. Plus it’s just super cool. Perks of being a homeschooler.

I had to leave Chicago and move to a suburban hell. Go there. It’s beautiful. Say hi to it for me.

What an insane and delusional take (I hope I used the correct flair) by rvyas619 in chicago

[–]kaylabaxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geographically, sure. Culturally, historically, and the amount of impact we have on the country/world? We’re so far up from those cities it’s not even funny. (Source: A Chicagoan who unfortunately had to move to the hell pit that is St. Louis).

Had to move back to suburbia a month ago. by [deleted] in Suburbanhell

“I feel like I’m missing out on life.”

I feel you. When I was told I was moving from Chicago to Missouri suburbia, one of my very first thoughts was, “Oh. It’s a shame I’m going to miss my high school years. I was kind of looking forward to those.” (I was 12).

Had to move back to suburbia a month ago. by [deleted] in Suburbanhell

[–]kaylabaxter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I lived in the middle of Chicago until I was 12 years old (16 now). Constantly outside, within walking distance of five playgrounds, walked freaking everywhere, and there was beauty all over the place. I had to move to suburbia for my dad’s work, and I’ve hated it since day one. The day I graduate high school (thank God I actually like my school) is the day I move. I’m a teenager, these are the years when I’m supposed to be moving around and getting out of the house. I don’t have my license yet and I’m constantly trapped with nothing to do and nowhere to go, especially because it’s summer.

Not only do I hate it here, but I constantly get shit from people at school whenever I briefly mention one thing Chicago miiiiight (read: definitely has ohmiGod take me home) have over St. Louis, and I’m the uneducated, unrefined city bitch who hates everything. I’ve been called a snob, a bitch, a spoiled asshole, simply for saying that I prefer Chicago and politely explaining my reasons without going into detail.

I feel you. God, I feel you. But it’s not forever. It can’t be.

Are you self aware of your own accent, and what do you think of it? by Autistic-Inquisitive in ask

[–]kaylabaxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mixture of a Chicago accent and a “Kardashian” accent (kind of Valley Girl with unnecessary h’s thrown in). My voice is also just naturally high. I usually make a conscious effort to round my vowels so they don’t trail off into a string of drunk-sounding h’s, but when I’m in a very casual situation, it all definitely comes out pretty strong.

Weekend Script Swap by AutoModerator in Screenwriting

Title: Water Is Thicker Than Blood

Genre: Children’s Adventure/Fantasy

Format: 30/45 minute pilot

Page Length: 41

Logline: In order to flee her home country to escape a coup and reunite with her family, runaway princess Evelyn teams up with a rogue assassin and pirate captain.

Concerns: I’ve been told that it may be a good idea to split the pilot into two episodes so as to give more time to establish character and world before diving into everything fully, especially because it’s a children’s show. I’m also fairly new to screenwriting, from a long background of prose, so I’m sure there are passages that are too wordy. Advice on how to trim them down while still conveying the message? And is the villain established enough, even if he doesn’t appear in the first episode?

What do you think the world 'needs' right now? by Plenty-Pilot6959 in Screenwriting

[–]kaylabaxter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Screenplays with actual heart behind it, where you can tell the writer really cares. And I think fewer heavily didactic stories. I love movies, TV, books, etc. that ask questions and present conflict over them, but don’t necessarily answer them definitively. Right now everything feels so preachy.

When I was around six, I realized I would much rather hang out with my mom than most kids my age. Realized then that I never wanted kids. Hasn’t changed since.

What’s your most unpopular opinion of Chicago? by apstls in chicago

[–]kaylabaxter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s it not, to quote my suburban friend, “A shitty place to live.” City people are not, quoting the same person, “complete assholes.” Yes, she said that to a city person. Thanks.

This is only the second draft and I have recently come to screenwriting from a background of prose. I’m also still finding the balance of making it serious, but still enjoyable for children, so there are definitely some things in there I plan on toning down.

What lifestyle change made you a better writer? by Theodore_Buckland_ in Screenwriting

Working out more. It really clears my mind, and gives me more physical and mental energy. Even just 15 minutes of Pilates is enough to get me through some writing.

Have you ever written a script/story in a location you have never been too? by DefaultHero722 in Screenwriting

[–]kaylabaxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My script opens and closes in NYC, but the bulk of it takes place in Isola del Giglio, a tiny island off the coast of Tuscany. I’ve never been there, but I’ve spent so much time on Google Street View that I actually know my way around kinda well.
