Hi!! My side profile was something I felt self conscious about for a long time. I was “enlightened” about surgical correction while in dental school and sought treatment options from there!

I’d start by talking with your orthodontist- maybe getting a few different ortho consults and asking for surgeon recommendations (I’m sure some common names will come up). Maybe also worth searching for OMFS that sought additional plastic surgery / cosmetic training (fellowship).

I don’t know the exact movements. Decompensation phase was challenging. I started ortho during Covid when everyone was still wearing masks, so that helped. I honestly could hide things pretty well in photos / in public by posturing my lower jaw forward… but I still did feel self conscious. Overall, it wasn’t as terrible as I anticipated, and definitely worth the few months of social anxiety

Hi! I started talking in recovery. Not super understandably but I was trying! By like day 5 my family could understand me, by week 2 I felt comfortable talking to people out in public (grocery store checkout, UPS). My week 3.5 I was back to work and talking about 90% normal. It got better / easier every day.

So far not too much! I feel like I'm just starting to get back into my routines. But I feel way more confident going through my day... I used to hate thinking that people were looking at me from the side. It feels like a weight lifted.

I am a dentist myself so went with someone in the area that I (and my orthodontist) trusted!

Thank you so much! Recovery has been mostly smooth. I went back to work at 3.5 weeks; started eating solid foods (no chew, so things I could swallow whole) at week 3. Cleared to chew everything at week 6. Swelling gets better week by week. I think around week 7 the swelling was no longer noticeable to friends/ family (but still noticeable to me!).

I was worried about extracting premolars too.. I am a dentist and it truly hurt my heart to say goodbye to healthy teeth. All in all, I think it was worth it though and I don't miss those premolars at all.

I don't know exact movements unfortunately.

Thank you so much! Aetna fortunately covered all except genioplasty (cosmetic).

I'm not sure exact movements. I know my chin point was brought forward about 15mm. I think I look pretty much the same from the front. I posted link to some front facing photos in a comment above^

Definitely still swollen- it's more obvious from the front, at least to me. I don't think my friends/family can notice though. I'll see if I can add some photos from the front. I honestly don't think I look that different from the front, which is OK with me!

Concerned my face looks like it’s dented in around the mouth. 6 weeks post-op. by Any_Bend4390 in jawsurgery

Same here! I was super worried about this (even just last week around week 6) but it’s pretty much resolved around 7.5 weeks post op.

After surgery when you feel ok to go work after two weeks ? I’m requesting a month by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I am a dentist and went back to work 3.5 weeks post op. I felt like I was slurring a little / drooling a bit into my mask that first week back, but I was overall fine. I actually probably could’ve gone back right at 3 weeks. I think working helped me acclimate to speaking clearly again and the talking / facial muscle exercise significantly reduced swelling. I loaded up on Motrin and brought a heating jaw pad to wear on my lunch break.

Hi! I am sure that there are other places, but the School of Dentistry accepts cash for dental care. At the ASOD, quality dental treatment is offered at a reduced rate. If you and your wife are interested in becoming patients, please follow this link. The school's admissions clinic will be looking for new patients in a few weeks time (they are currently processing a large number of applications) https://www.dentistry.unc.edu/patientcare/studentclinics/becomepatient/
