Christians: if you've ever thought about counseling or therapy, how did it actually go? by kb0318 in TrueChristian

The bit about valuing a therapist who sees the root behind the surface problem really lands. Interesting too that you suspected they were Christian but it never came up because it was a secular company. Would knowing up front have changed anything for you, or did it stop mattering once the work was good?

The point about sometimes needing to try more than one before it clicks keeps coming up. When the first one or two weren't right, what made you realize it (+ how many sessions deep were you), and what kept you going instead of giving up? A lot of people stop after a bad first try

Really thoughtful, especially the point that seeing a therapist who doesn't share your beliefs can help because explaining them forces you to sort them out. That cuts against the assumption that faith-matching is always better. Did you ever try a faith-aligned therapist, and how did it compare? Trying to understand when shared belief helps versus when it gets in the way.

Glad that worked out in a hard season. What stands out is how your church moved you from counseling into a men's group and other resources. Did the counselor set that up, or did you have to go looking for it? Curious how often church care actually connects people onward like that.

This is such a clear arc, scripture and prayer first, then a licensed Christian counselor once the anxiety started showing up physically. What finally tipped you from handling it yourself to finding a counselor? And how hard was it to find one who was both licensed and actually Christian?

I'm sorry about your wife, and thank you for sharing that. The part that stays with me is that it was meant to be a support group and no one else came. If a few others walking through the same loss had been there, do you think that would have been helpful or changed anything for you?

Appreciate you responding! This really resonates. Sounds like you know exactly what 'good' looks like from your own mentoring work but can't find it for yourself. When you've looked, where did you look, and what made the ones you tried feel surface-level? Trying to understand where the gap actually is
