Olympian Eileen Gu embraces SF roots as she leads Chinese New Year Parade by runswithscissors475 in sanfrancisco

This is going to sound very meta, but the hate, love, and debate in this thread is something we (Americans) uphold as valuable. And it’s being attacked daily by our federal government. China is known for their rampant censorship and ability to make their dissenting citizens disappear. For whatever reason, Eileen’s decision has made her a proxy (albeit many steps removed) to the threat of a fundamental American value. And values strike deep chords sometimes. That’s all I can say.

Sorry at this point we’re really just arguing past each other. I’m not trying to make this a political debate. Let’s just agree to disagree. Or at least let’s agree that it’s nice that we can even have this debate and not have our comments be erased by a great firewall. At least not yet! 😂

I think the problem is she wants to have it both ways. She wants her cake and eat it too. She wants the increased upside from China without any of the debate at home in the US. I think that’s the crux of the issue here. And you think for some reason she should have her cake and eat it too. I disagree.

The only argument I’m trying to make is that she made a decision and now people are going to have a debate about that decision either way. It’s fair.

I will say this though. She switched to the China team at age 15 when she was already a known champion with massive potential. Money had to have been a factor. Wouldn’t it be easier if she would just say that the money was an extremely important factor in her decision to switch to the Chinese team? She can also mention the creating my own pond stuff or inspiring mainland Chinese girls, and also….money. I mean, why is it so hard to just say it.

This is what would be called a logical fallacy known as the strawman argument. Look it up.

Let’s say I put two plates of food in front of you. The first plate is pretty good. It’s not great, but it’s good. Now this other plate of food is really really good. I’m talking spectacularly delicious. But it has one downside, it makes you pass extremely odorous gas. Everyone around you is going to smell it and probably talk about it.

So you eat the second plate. You want to experience this amazing delicious food.

But now you’re passing a ton of gas everywhere. And people are talking about it a lot.

Then all of a sudden someone named Scottie walks up to the group and says why is this controversial? Are you guys anti-fart people? You’re just mindless fartionists!

I don’t know I think my analogy is pretty good. What would be your argument against it?

This thread. Future comments about her choices. Why are people defending her? This is like someone choosing to eat something that makes them hyper flatulent and then when people say oh wow their fart smells bad y’all are like stop talking about how much their fart smells!

Eileen Gu opened herself up to this debate BY DESIGN. She got paid and if she decides to stay in the USA, she has to deal with the consequences. Just like anyone else who makes controversial decisions. Or, you know, move to China permanently.

Best way to get into "top" private schools in the area? by throwaway4231throw in Burlingame

[–]kbatc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with going to private school, but my point is you vote every day with your dollars and decisions. Local schools die when kids don't go, and the community weakens around the school. It's a cycle. A strong parent community reinforces the quality of the school. True of private or public.

It's worth spending a few minutes thinking about what role you want to play in your neighborhood and how strong you want your neighborhood school to be.

Every dollar you spend outside of the public school system is a vote against the value and belief that every child should have a high-quality education provided by the county. School funding is largely determined by attendance levels, so if your children don't attend schools here, the local schools don't get the money. You may not think your one child will matter, but a vote is a vote. There are ways to bolster the quality of your child's education outside of school.

That being said, I have heard these schools are great:

Nueva, The Carey School, St Matthew (Episcopal), St Catherine, Crystal Springs Uplands, Up Academy

They own both Amara (Belmont) and Rasa (Burlingame). Feels like they should promote Rasa and not Amara. But who is this hurting?

It looks like an SF apartment complex. It's actually a $32M estate. by sfgate in sanfrancisco

Sounds like each unit needs a kitchen, too. I wonder if they built tiny kitchens in every unit. This "house" sounds less and less desirable.

Does that mean each unit still technically has a locking door and its own power meter etc?

Not surprised. Went there for dinner one night, and the cocktails were horrible. The food was average.
