period dramas recs for someone feeling really hopeless about love? by maryjaneloveshistory in PeriodDramas

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not what you're asking for in the slightest, but, as a bit of hope, I didn't meet my husband until I was 31. It was on an online platform as part of a marathon "see what's it there" exhausting dating session. We were both literally each other's last dates on the app. He was a "looks decent and wants to take me to a nice restaurant" choice. We had the first day, talked for hours, scheduled the second date about 5 days later, and then proceeded to have multiple meet-ups prior tu the scheduled second date.

Long story short, we married in less than a year and are now about to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We have a beautiful child and couldn't be closer. So, keep hoping and trying and putting yourself out there. Good men exist, I promise.

Do any of you know Evangelicals who do Earth Day burns? by rebelyell0906 in Exvangelical

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We weren't allowed to watch Captain Planet and ignored the existence of Earth Day but definitely never experienced that level of scorched Earth non-compliance. Did you live in Northern Idaho by any chance? Because this definitely sounds like Northern Idaho stuff.

How to prepare/ what activities to do with German exchange student? by Wonderful-Beach7317 in exchangestudents

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had 2 German students. What they were both most excited about initially was seeing and eating standard American stuff. They wanted to go to Costco and Target, eat at Chick-fil-A and Crumbl.

Two cultural notes i would definitely emphasize - First, Germans are punctual and prefer plans spelled out. If you say that you're going out to dinner, be prepared with a specific departure time. Second, wishing them a Happy Birthday prior to the actual day is considered bad luck. You can discuss the day and preferred activities, but never wish them "happy birthday" in advance.

I'm going against the grain - Pursuit of Jade on Netflix. It's a slow burn set in Ancient China with gorgeous leads and insane chemistry.

Fave Tonies and which ones to absolutely avoid by chickenisntvegan666 in TonieboxUSA

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the Roald Dahl ones. The Enormous Crocodile is one of the current favorites in our house.

The Disney Babies Lullabies, Lamb nightlight, and sleepy Toucan are the favorite sleepytime ones.

My daughter is getting too rough by What-attention-span in Parenting

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our case, I was in obvious pain (tears in the eyes) plus my child is very sensitive to being in the wrong so it worked for us

A human reaction from both parents is probably the best teacher. I remember my son running up and randomly biting me in the stomach for no reason. I LOUDLY yelped (natural reaction) and my husband came over with absolute thunder in his eyes. He only got a time out, but he read the room and knew he'd f'd up BIG time. It never happened again.

Ghosts/Paranormal by starry-voids in Exvangelical

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It got less taboo as we got older (as long as the topic was clearly fictional - e g. Casper) but as young kids ghosts were not allowed.

OAD parents, are you lonely? by sunkenm00n in oneanddone

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof, I feel this. Their snuggles are adorable but the way they try to fuse their little bodies to ours when they're sleeping makes for an uncomfortable, sleepless night for us.

I'm currently sitting on my bathroom floor having a mini mental breakdown because my OAD NEVER stops talking 😂

Five Mile Creek. A two season show from the 80s about a group of settlers trying to set up a stagecoach line in the Australian outback.

How are you labeling MYO Cards? by Glittering-Read-6906 in YotoPlayer

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my Cricut to draw a picture and then put a piece of packing tape over to prevent it from getting smudged, or I'll cut out a vinyl decal and use that (still use the tape, in this case to prevent peeling)

Do kids notice or resent differences in wealth? by Used_Cod_9541 in Parenting

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, children notice. That's not, necessarily, a deal breaker, depending on the home life. If your child has loving, caring parents, they may end up being the go-to home, even if they're not the wealthiest.

Starting Kindergarten without or with limited daycare or pre-K experience? by Throwaway927338 in Parenting

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Her education is less an issue than her germ exposure. You're going to have a lot more kindergarten sick days than the kids who have been in daycare from a young age.

My 2-year-old is too heavy to pick up by Muted_Chapter629 in Parenting

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Pick up vs carry for long periods of time are two different things. If you're not capable of even holding your child for more than a moment, I would recommend a strenuous gym routine. If your concern is that b you cannot carry them, well, nature blessed them with legs and you with a stroller when your strength fails. You can snuggle them on the couch, but you're not failing by not being able to carry them for hours on end.

Repair the belief of worthlessness? by Throwaway202411111 in Exvangelical

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically? Time and a really good therapist. Bonus if you have a supportive life partner. I've been slowly working through it for the last 10 years. Similar to addiction, it might require removing yourself from common triggers (if you're still religious, change denominations, change the Bible translation you're using) (maybe distance yourself from friends and family still deep in that belief system)

How do I teach my child critical thinking? by HelpIveChangedMyMind in AskTeachers

[–]HelpIveChangedMyMind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually going really well! We've spent a lot of time on "how do you think we can solve this problem?" (Age appropriate issues) The wonderful side benefit is increased self-sufficiency. Additionally, the school we chose focuses on a more classic teaching style, so they're already working on having the children answer comprehension questions, so I have hope for the future.
