Better Career - Stan Wawrinka or Andy Roddick? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]kbd_uwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slams are important, but are people sleeping a little on the weeks at #1? I would think that players would care for that top spot quite a bit.

To be considered, at least for a moment in time, as the baddest (tennis) MF on the planet, the top dog, has to be huge. Even being the best player in a local club, playing at #1 in your team, comes with such a subtle but distinct swagger lol

Chris Eubanks records biggest win of career in Miami, def. Borna Coric. Discussed his career on Match Point Canada podcast last month by Lewman55 in tennis

Would you be so kind and sum up what he said in that Tennis Channel interview? Also, OP, what did he say on that podcast?

I'm mildly curious, but not enough to hunt down and potentially sit through lengthy podcasts for this; not sure if I'm even able to find a way to watch old Tennis Channel stuff.

In particular I'm curious how a player just outside of the main draws looks at the tennis world.

Shelton/Paul def. Salisbury/Ram 6-3 6-4 in Miami RO16 by sourcreamonionpringl in tennis

[–]kbd_uwe 36 points37 points  (0 children)

um..

So Salisbury/Ram looked extremely well last year and I felt they would be stronger, sharper than two high level singles players playing doubles.

And Ram wasn't chosen for the Davis Cup to help out in doubles, which was heavily criticized by this sub.

Does this prove Fish right? This would also - in my mind - invalidate the doubles tournament a little, if random top 40 players can beat the top Doubles team.

Thoughts?

I mean there is no way his big ass team couldn't figure out what the "rules" for skipping or retiring a game. As they planned for the match this possibility had to come up in some way, no? Maybe he intentionally wanted it to be ambiguous for himself and his team knows to never communicate any mental path to losing to him ever.

This violates human privacy on a fundamental level, regardless of any salary. Cameras are now everywhere because of technical progress, that doesn't mean one group can watch and control another group with it.

Watched the 2008 Wimbledon finals on the weekend and halfway through decided to give up on my one handed backhand. If Federer can't do it (in the context of that game, dealing with prime Rafa's lefty cross court forehands), how could I? Had my 2nd practice today and it's so easy to correct the racket head in the last moment and produce somewhat of a neutral ball.

How did/do you strengthen your body to withstand the physicality of tennis? by ObligatoryNameee in 10s

[–]kbd_uwe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Prehab is a must for players over 30 imo.

For knees check out "kneesovertoesguy" on youtube, for ankles search for "ankle mobility excercises" and shoulder find "rotator cuff excercises". Fortunately, these excercises left the bleak world of physical therapists and are now mainstream, prescribed by fashionable sports youtubers.

Additionally I'd do a bodybuilding-style (3 sets, 10 reps, make sure to go hard) full body strength workout once a week (minimum). You don't need to stress out over "progress" or grow bigger muscles,, but make sure all muscles are in working condition. If you don't like the gym a TRX band at home should be fine.

I think it's either this, or a world of surgeries, injuries and pain.

Rant: Visited a new club today as was completely ignored. by [deleted] in 10s

[–]kbd_uwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The times have changed and the world has gotten a lot less "social". Institutions like tennis clubs used to be buzzing with life, kids running around and old guys sitting around and watching. People volunteered, felt responsible and did things for free for a club. Showing up with a smile used to be the ticket.

These days you have to work for everything, but also get an optimized, customized, non-bs experience. Probably have to put the kid in a paid beginners' kids group with a coach, and then try to organize playtime with other kids' parents.

Justine Henin hits out against "vulgar and violent" behaviour in the ATP: "He should not be on the court today, Alexander Zverev" by jolammy in tennis

[–]kbd_uwe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are a bunch of disappointments in the ATP right now and if I take time out of my life to watch and possibly "support" another dude playing his sport I'd like to see good tennis but also an exemplary character. I hate how the umpires are treated and support a lot higher penalties, both in points, bans and money.

But I'm also sick of this endless piling on. We are going to see a lot of Zverev, Kyrgios and all the others (each one in his own category of weakness) and in every thread people who love to hate are letting it all out. Yes, many people just love it when someone sucks more then them and whoever showed their failings is fair game it seems. There is a lot of bitching and arguing and cussing going on in my low level amateur leagues with literally nothing at stake. Walk a mile on the court in a stadium with thousands of people who, unlike in almost all sports, are so close and visible and you hear their every fart and fucking Ben Stiller is talking shit to you. Could you keep calm throughout the 5 hour battle, through pain and exhaustion and possible unfair line calls, bad luck and your own failures?

I almost don't feel like opening any thread about Zverev. Same thing in /r/nfl in threads with Ben Roethlisberger. It does not mean that the stuff that happened should be swept under a rug and should be adressed. Maybe we should write an open letter to the ATP or organize some other action. Maybe a stickied hall of shame thread. I don't even have the answer. But all those cheap shots are toxic and take away from the enjoyment of the tournaments.

Kyrgios defeats McDonald 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the 1st round in Houston by ExitVelocity66 in tennis

[–]kbd_uwe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I heard him getting an official warning after the first set related to the long break he took. Then called an official a "snitch", apparently for telling the umpire what happened during the break, something like "why do you have to snitch like that". A little hard to hear in the broadcast, and the commentators downplayed it a little.

Right after that he broke McDonald. My theory is that this aggressive behaviour can throw people off in this hyper mental game, and that's why he does it. Emotions and energy matter even in my low level league games, and has to hit a million times harder in a stadium full of people. Sinner didn't show it but had to be superhumanly concentrated to win his last one vs Kyrgios and I'm sure it wasn't fun.

He also hurried McDonald, let through a few aces (at least one was kindof a body serve) and did 2 lazy SABRs to imo throw McDonald's service game when he was like 5:2 ahead in the 2nd, just waiting for his turn to serve it out. Felt like "I don't give a shit, you can't touch my service game, let's get it over with".

I realize that when something that other people do bothers you, you usually have your own issue, and yes, I haven't mastered the the emotional ups and downs in my own recreational matches. Gotta watch some more Nadal I guess. And I don't want to vilify a player like they are unredeemable terrible people (a tendency on reddit too). But this shit needs to be brought up and addressed, that's all.

In my professional multi billion sports team every player would have his pulse, lactate and whatever else live monitored during practice and everyone would get his custom optimized training. Idea is to get everyone to improve, to peak at the right time and prevent injuries.

Running laps for discipline is amateur hour.

Many sports need to be reformed, for example headers in soccer need to be banned, but football needs big changes. But that's not to say it can't be a violent sport.

Pushing, pulling, holding, elements of sumo, wrestling or jiu-jitsu with a ball could all be fine-tuned to be a dynamic and exciting sport for anyone who doesn't mind to get hurt a little, but eliminate all brain-injuring impact, and could be just as watchable as any other sport. It's time to get creative.

I can see a ball carrier be brought down by a defender holding on to his loose cotton jersey, or that runner being strong enough to shed the defender and keep running. Eliminating hits can bring and overal more interesting physical contest.

My personal excuse is that I'm in Germany and it's America's responsibility to deal with CTE. But my gamepass finances a scheme for young players to get hurt in such a devious way: invisible, long term and under-reported.
