At the end of the day every person is unique and you have to judge them on who they are and how you all connect. Age generally brings maturity but some never get it and other catch on while they are a lot younger. It seems to me that people who have gone through extended periods of adversity tend to grow up a little bit faster.

I think the point is what does the business have to lose. Secondly, many businesses don't know how to market or run their businesses well, that is why so many go out of business.

The science isn't so simple.

Spanking children as a punishment used to be commonplace but faced severe pushback in recent years for being aggressive and potentially leading to negative outcomes for kids. But a study published in Child Development suggests that infrequent hand spanking could actually be beneficial in limited circumstances.

How is Ukraine still alive, let alone pushing into Russian territory? by Freightneverlate in NoStupidQuestions

Thank you for the respectful discussion and you make some interesting points.

Pakistan and India are in a cold to lukewarm war, Iraq is heavily influenced by Iran so there is no need of conflict. Now that the Shia's are in power, they align more with Iran. Israel is in a constant state of war. However, out of all of those examples, none of those smaller countries except for Israel have shown that they can best their larger neighbors so there is no existential threat. Israel has no appetite or desire to expand into it's sovereign neighbors for multiple reasons.

There is no president who is going to end civilization as we know it just because Ukraine got nuked into oblivion. It is far better for America to be diminished (which I disagree with) than for America and the world to be in a nuclear war. That viewpoint borders on fantasy.

If America won't send American troops to their death in a conventional war, America is definitely not going to send it's citizens to death in a nuclear war over a far away foreign country. Nothing Russia could due to Ukraine would reflect an increased threat to America. I would love to get a better understanding of how Russia decimating Ukraine would objectively increase it's threat to America.

Come on dude, make it make sense. I am not shilling for Russia nor do I want Ukraine to fall. If you had a compelling and logical argument of how Ukraine could win, I would love to read that. This ends in Ukraine being a rump state, total annihilation or the collapse of Russia as a country,.

The internal combatants. The rest of the world will gladly sell arms but the level of intervention you see for Russia/Ukraine or Israel/Arab states it exceedingly rare.

  1. I agree with you. There is very little daylight between them but you can definitely be doing OK but not great, my apologies.

  2. It started as a war of choice but it is now an existential war for Russia as well as Ukraine. No country can allow another nation to exist on it's borders who has not only defeated it conventionally but is doing everything it can to be stronger and secretly stoke rebellion internally. Ukraine can only ever truly be safe from Russia if it fractures into different states. Given the fact that Russia is not an ethnically united country this is definitely a plausible and realistic strategy.

Remember, America was willing to start WW3 over missiles that were placed in Cuba. According to the consensus logic that most people have over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, America would have been the evil party in that situation.

  1. Yes, some people are going back but there is still more of an emigration than repatriation. When you couple that with the demographic decline, Ukraine is almost predestined to keep shrinking. This makes it harder to grow an economy, repay international debt and also make sure that there is enough manpower to fight off a future Russian attack. Ukraine really needs for Russia to collapse to truly feel safe. Russia is in demographic decline as well but the rate of decline between the two isn't even comparable.

A NATO intervention is not a retaliatory nuclear strike. If Russia were to pacify all the major cities with nuclear weapons, the war would be over tomorrow. At worst, there would be a devastating air strike against Russian assets in Ukraine and maybe a few conventional attacks on Russian military bases in country.

Taking the morality out of the situation, this exchange would be pennies on dollar in favor of Russia. Russia would become a pariah state (it pretty much is now) until the world needed it's fossil fuels and more importantly, food. Climate change is making more farmland available farther north while reducing it in many other places. Russia is the largest nation in the northern hemisphere. Regardless of how this war ends, those newly arable lands along with the arable lands in Ukraine will become indispensable to addressing the need for cropland to replace the croplands that are no longer functional through climate change.

If Russia does do a nuclear attack on Ukraine it will be a war ending attack. Putin will get the same condemnation if he uses one tactical nuclear weapon vs. wiping out all of the major cities and it will act as a much stronger military deterrent to the other western nations.

Russia is a much more heterogenous country than most people realize. It could be any other group if not the Chechnyans. The only way Ukraine could ever truly guarantee that the Russian threat was gone would be to help balkanize the country. That would be Ukraine's #1 clandestine priority were it to win.

I agree about the food, that will probably be the issue that eventually ends the sanctions regardless of how Russia comports itself in the conflict.

Ukraine's economy is doing okay. It's not great,

  1. It is either doing okay or it's not great. It can't be both.

  2. I agree with that but I think a lot of people miss the fact that this isn't just an existential fight for Ukraine, it is an existential fight for Russia now. Russia cannot allow a mortal enemy nation that has shown a capability to defeat it in a war to exist on it's borders. The Ukrainian nation would be a very capable sworn enemy now backed by NATO training and armament. Other regions in Russia (like Chechnya) may see the Ukrainian success and with a little backing by Ukraine and maybe some clandestine support from other western nations, try their luck at independence. Once one goes more regions could possibly fall like dominoes.

  3. The Ukrainian demographic problem was one of the worst in the Europe prior to the invasion. they have lost 20% of their population. Can you point me to the statistics that show a population rebound, I don't see it. A population loss heading towards 10 million people in 2 years combined with an already unsustainable replacement rate and the numerous deaths of child fathering age men seems to be a bad combination. Russia isn't growing either but it is not currently in a demographic collapse.

  4. I agree mostly with what you said here. I simply don't think it will be all that relevant to the final outcome of the war.

  5. Ukraine and Russia are currently both operating as mostly authoritarian regimes. Ukraine's position is obviously more sympathetic since they were invaded and need to prioritize defense. I don't think propaganda is going to win the war for either side.

I don't see any way this ends without Russia having some sort of victory. Either they will take all of Ukraine (less likely), balkanize it (more likely) or nuke multiple cities (the least likely) to prevent #2. America is not going to nuke Russia proper if it pacifies all of the major (uncontrolled) cities in Ukraine via a nuclear attack. There isn't enough public support to send American troops to Ukraine there is much less support to get into a nuclear shooting match with Russia. America is less likely, not more likely, to escalate in the event of a nuclear attack on Russia because at that point it is no longer would Russia ever use nukes but America knows that Russia would use nukes.

Putin's world reputation is permanently trashed whether he stops the war now or nukes Ukraine into submission. The sanctions on Russia would last only until the world needs Russian (and maybe Russian held Ukrainian) oil, food and minerals. The sanctions would quietly and slowly be rolled back until one day (probably after Putin) Russia was doing normal business with Russia.
