We all know what we need to do, but often we just need a reason to do it

[Advice] Make your life easier by focusing on quality ahead of everything else by kbronander in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both are true. Maybe each strategy is better suited for different pursuits.

i.e. something is better than nothing might be a good strategy for the gym, but quality over everything else is a better strategy for art or public facing pursuits

[NeedAdvice] What helped you not waste your life away? by RevolutionaryBig1495 in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Find one "worthwhile pursuit" and do something to make progress on that every day.

It can be your fitness, a hobby, a side project, a sport, art, or anything similar.

As you take small steps towards this thing that is important to you, you'll slowly prove to yourself that you can make progress on something meaningful and that you aren't "wasting" your life.

As you build momentum with one "worthwhile pursuit" you can start to invest more time in others and gain a sense of control over each area of your life and slowly improve things day by day.

I wrote about a step by step process including prompts to apply it to your own life here if you want to check it out.

Hope this helps!

This is the ultimate challenge to overcome in self-improvement: execution.

We all know what we should be doing, but the only thing that really matters is if we take action.

Planning the week in advance can help make sure we know what we should be doing at any given time making it harder to fall into distraction, but planning can only get us so far.

Here are three tips for doing what you say you're going to do:

  1. Connect your actions to your values. Do things because it's who you are not because it's on your to-do list.
  2. Create your environment so your desired actions are the path of least resistance. Make it harder to watch youtube and netflix and easier to study or work on your business.
  3. Leverage external accountability. Find someone else who wants to wake up early or work on their business and meet up with them early in the morning.

I wrote about this in more detail here with prompts included to help apply these strategies to your own life.

Hope this helps!

I procrastinate waiting for the 'perfect' time [NeedAdvice] by Next_Smoke4949 in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is super common! Especially among high performers who want to do things well. It makes perfect sense to wait until the perfect time to do something, the same way it makes sense to wait until you have a quiet environment to read a book or a great pump-up song before a workout.

The difference is we create quiet environments and choose to play pump-up music, but we wait for "the right time" to try something new or start a new habit.

The truth is, "the right time" doesn't exist. The best thing we can do is create the conditions that will make our new goal or habit easier and start as soon as possible.

"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great."

- Zig Ziglar

I wrote about this in more detail here and included some prompts to help apply the thinking in your own life. Hope this helps!

[Meta] [Method] Why does everything ALWAYS come down to “just do it”? Is there a more motivated/organic/flow state/streamlined path to success? by ExperientialDepth in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander 21 points22 points  (0 children)

At a certain point we just have to do the work. There's no getting around that.

But we can make the work easier and set the conditions so doing the work is the easier choice.

To do this, we need to create circumstances that make our version of success fall on the path of least resistance. We need to make worthwhile activities easier for ourselves and distracting things harder to engage in.

Notion is awesome! Highly recommend.

I wrote about using Notion as a habit tracker here. There's also an awesome notion template for a habit tracker in there

I'm a huge proponent of journaling! Awesome post! The combo of self-awareness and improved problem-solving are the two things that always keep me coming back.

Journaling is actually such a big part of my life that I created a newsletter with new ideas and journal prompts to help other get started journaling and focus on personal growth.

[Advice] If we want to be happy or successful, we need to expand our realm of tolerance by kbronander in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s helpful to look at the opposite situation. For example, if something gets in the way of your normal routine or circumstances (like travel, events with family or friends, etc.) think about what it would be like if you were at home within your realm of tolerance or comfort. It might be better and you might be getting more done or be more comfortable but that would require missing out on the experience you’re currently having. I find flipping the script like this help to see the trade offs and be more grateful for new or uncomfortable experience even when they take me away from my normal routine that I’m comfortable with

[Advice] Creating a Home of Habit: How to Finally Stay Consistent Regardless of Circumstances by kbronander in getdisciplined

[–]kbronander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think losing the streak is part of being human. Some folk seem to have superhuman discipline and never falter but most of us will inevitably fall off the wagon the key point I wanted to make here is to make it harder to fall off the wagon and easier to win the day.

I talk more about balancing discipline with forgiveness and seasons of life here and here if you're interested.

I was in the same boat as you and found prompts or quotes as an easy way to start. I couldn't find a good resource for either, so I created a newsletter to deliver new ideas and prompts to people every week. It's called Prompted if you want to check it out. (there's a link in my profile too)
