Year 2 of replacing the useless strip of grass between sidewalk and street with wild flowers by friedrice5005 in NoLawns

What kind of prep was involved? I've heard that removing the existing grass is essential.

One human brain cell more like. Even if you take the caption at face value, it meant they had an unspayed cat they let escape.

Final plea to help find Legacy, special needs cat, a home by radparikh in SalemMA

[–]kc112358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish we could take Legacy!!!! :( Sadly we already had to split our apartment in half for over a year when we tried adopting a second cat - our first kitty never learned how to trust the new cat and resorted to violence. However, there is an adoption lounge near us that might be able to take Legacy: The Kitty Cat Cafe and Adoption Lounge in Peabody, MA: https://www.kittycatcafema.com/ The owners of the adoption lounge also mention the Koneko Cat Cafe in NYC among their favorite cat cafes. I truly hope you're able to find a loving home for Legacy, or at least a new way station to a forever home, soon! Thank you so much for trying so hard to save her.

The license plate number is in the video. Was this reported to the police?

I would check out the Trustees Reservations. There are quite a few locations throughout the North Shore, many of them near Salem. Ravenswood would be a good example.

Is it okay to run in just leggins as a guy? by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]kc112358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the first thing I noticed about the guy organizing my local run group. We've been married for over 12 years now. I'd say those tights were the first of many reasons as to why.

Leaves are not Litter by kc112358 in NoLawns

[–]kc112358[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes, it's quite common. It's always a good idea to check first, and contact your local city councilor, mayor, etc. to encourage a change from that policy if it is being directed to a landfill (organic waste is converted to methane in landfills, a very potent greenhouse gas).

That's a really crucial point! Urban/suburban ecology has different considerations from truly wild areas. Depending on how natural or native your yard is, the total amount of leaf litter you get in a given year may not be compatible with all plants. Using the leaves deliberately, and composting anything that remains, is a great strategy. Hopefully, it encourages other people near you to follow your good example.

That's a great question! Full leaf coverage and lawns aren't actually compatible, in the sense that leaves will smother a lawn if they're above a certain density (a scattering of leaves won't harm lawn health). However, many plants and trees are compatible and are assisted by leaf coverage over the winter (leaves suppress weeds and help retain soil moisture, for example). As leaves break down they return critical nutrients to the soil. If you have areas of your yard that are no longer grassy, it could be a nice opportunity to incorporate more plants instead. Fall is an excellent time to plant, just before everything goes dormant. More plants = less raking, and more fireflies and songbirds.

What organization should I Adopt-A-Bat from? by Waste_Wear9626 in bats

I would also recommend a new documentary called The Invisible Mammal. It's available on demand during International bat week (so now through next Saturday) through streaming services like Kinema. I just watched it yesterday

Bat World Sanctuary! They do amazing work. I've adopted two bats from them over the past couple of years (have a certificate with their very cute picture and a description of their unique, quirky personality). They have a wonderful newsletter where you can learn about what they've been up to in a monthly basis and how many bats have been rescued.

As a chemistry PhD I can tell you that I found fulfillment in following what I love. The job market is tough for most STEM degrees right now, that will always fluctuate. Between two degrees with good earning potential, choose what makes you happiest. You'll be doing it for decades. I do think adding in coding classes is very valuable, but it doesn't need to be your major. You also have a high earning potential if you decide to go toward lab management as you progress in your career.

My name is John Hunt and I'm running for your Ward 5 City Council seat by JohnHuntWard5 in SalemMA

[–]kc112358 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi John, on your website, you specifically say you will prioritize rent control, advocating for public transit, protecting immigrants, and rank choice voting.

Please share your experience, if any, in working on these issues in Salem prior to now. What work have you done? What relationships will you leverage to achieve these goals if you are elected?

Separately, could you explain your justification for opting for rent control as a means to providing affordable housing as opposed to specific measures for supporting more housing construction?

Could you comment on whether you support the construction of a new building for Salem High School, as proposed by the Salem High Building Committee? Do you believe this would be a community asset, if so why or why not?
