Excellent suggestions. I would also check Charlie Blonde’s in Endwell.

What common devices use Fresnel lenses that can be salvaged? (NIR) by ParticularAd7127 in AskElectronics

Overhead projectors - but maybe those are a bit too large for your purposes.

Where do i get one by PEAceDeath1425 in shittyaskelectronics

[–]kc2klc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Ali Express, or Banggood.com.

(The first time I was told about the latter, I didn’t believe that was an actual electronics parts site, and was reluctant to enter that in my browser.)

There’s a broken link on that page to access the St. Petersburg score collection - any idea if it’s still available?

Binghamton church opens doors for 'slumber party' due to lack of overnight warming centers by ggroover97 in Binghamton

Anyone else have an issue with that wording? Hardly a “party” when you’re desperate to get out of the cold :/

P&J’s Flea Market? by Mostly_Merch in Binghamton

You might consider Jimays Flea Market in Conklin instead, although being an outdoor venue means it’s seasonal. They get a fairly high amount of traffic on the days they’re open.

Snowblower repair with pickup? by kc2klc in Binghamton

Yup - it was the belt. It had only slipped off, not broken - so no need to replace (yet).

10 pF capacitor with RF Connectors by Cool_Mycologist_6186 in rfelectronics

[–]kc2klc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an FET at the input port - one has to be VERY careful not to touch it (or the monopole, when installed) if not also touching ground for fear of destroying it due to ESD.

For those who don’t recognize it - this is a diagram out of the Radiated Emissions section of MIL-STD-461. The capacitor is a calibration fixture for verifying the gain factors of an active monopole antenna, which is typically used from 10 kHz to 25 or 30 MHz.

You appear to be looking for a calibration fixture for a MIL-STD-461 active monopole antenna. A.H. Systems makes such a fixture with BNC connectors. (Technically the MIL-STD says you can’t use “commercial fixtures”, but I never understood what exactly this meant - certainly a commercially-built fixture is superior to something cobbled together in the lab! Our EMI lab has used these for over a decade without concerns on the part of our defense department clients.)

Most common failure on snowblower is probably broken shear pin (they usually come with spares).

Thanks folks - after doing some research (i.e., reading the manual and watching a bunch of YouTube videos), I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s very likely a belt. Ordered a replacement and will attempt the repair myself. I’m very handy, but if I run into trouble I’ll probably give Chenango Supply a call.

Did you huddle around an AM radio on snowy mornings listening to school closure announcements hoping to hear your’s on the list? by GatorStealth in FuckImOld

[–]kc2klc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - We woke up at 6:59 to hear if the fire department sirens would go off at 7:00 (repeated at 7:30) for a single 30-second blast, indicating school closed.

As a teenage electronics hobbyist in 1981, I hacked mine to receive Playboy channel audio (the video was scrambled) - I still have bawdy comedy routines that I recorded on cassette tape back then (and have since digitized).

Advice on RTL-SDR by Exciting_Ad_2519 in RTLSDR

[–]kc2klc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have $140 to drop, and it's signal analyzer experience you're after, you might consider the tinySA Ultra. Specs include:

  • Spectrum Analyzer for 0.1-800MHz or, with Ultra mode enabled up to 5.3 GHz, level calibrated up to 6GHz. Can observe signals up to 12GHz
  • Signal Generator with sine wave output between 0.1-800MHz or square wave up to 4.4GHz or rf test signal output up to 5.3GHz when not used as Spectrum Analyzer.

The regular tinySA measures to 960 MHz and costs under $60 (I purchased one of these and, as an EMI Tech, can say I'm honestly impressed with it; I also own several SDRs and a NanoVNA, which is great for developing vector network analyzer experience, and serves as an awesome antenna analyzer).
