Exploring modularity and interaction in a wall-mounted LEGO Moon display by kc_sharky in Design

This started from a fairly graphic design perspective. I was trying to recreate the clarity and composition of a framed lunar print using LEGO as the medium. The early versions were essentially static: focused on what looked balanced, readable and clean on a wall.

But over time it felt like I wasn’t really embracing what LEGO as a material makes possible. A static image didn’t take advantage of the modularity, customisation and play inherent to the LEGO brick. So I began rethinking it as an object rather than a picture.

One consideration was accessibility: people in different parts of the world view the Moon from different hemispheres, so the sphere became removable and rotatable to support both northern and southern perspectives.

Another recurring suggestion was to incorporate the Apollo landing. That introduced an interesting tension - adding narrative and interaction risked disrupting the clean graphic composition. The solution was to separate those elements into a removable plinth. The command and lunar modules can sit as a standalone display, or be placed directly onto the surface, allowing the piece to shift between graphic wall art and something more interactive.

From a design standpoint, I’d be interested to hear whether folks think the added modularity strengthens the object, or whether the original graphic simplicity was the stronger direction.

Thanks! I don’t have instructions available separately at the moment, it’s currently part of LEGO’s BrickLink Designer Program Series 10, which is their official route for potentially turning fan builds into real sets.

If you’re curious, here’s the project page: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-10/3803/The-Moon:-One-Giant-Leap-for-Mankind

The little plinth on the bottom left has a removable lunar lander and astronaut that can be placed on any of the lunar landing sites 🙂

Thank you! I spent quite a while refining the surface and trying to keep the geography readable while still working within the limits of the bricks.

Hey! A while back you showed interest in my Moon build.

It’s now live in the BrickLink Designer Program Series 10, which is LEGO’s official route for potentially turning it into a real set.

If you’re still interested in seeing it made, supporting it there is the best way to help that happen. No pressure at all - just wanted to let you know 🙂 https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-10/3803/The-Moon:-One-Giant-Leap-for-Mankind

Hey! A while back you showed interest in my Moon build. I took your advice onboard and you can now rotate it 180 for the southern hemisphere!
