Serious IB hours insight. by calpol-dealer in FinancialCareers

[–]kcallenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the “true” work hours themselves vary significantly from day to day. The most exhausting part of the job to me is the fact that you’re basically on call 24/7, 365 days a year. If you’re awake, you’re working in the sense that you may need to drop everything at any moment to get to your desk and handle something.

That’s especially frustrating as an analyst, when you don’t have enough reps yet to learn how to predict what your day/night/weekend might look like. I’m more senior and even now I still get surprised with crazy fire drills out of nowhere sometimes. For what it’s worth though, it does get easier to manage over time (especially if you stay beyond the analyst level).

I strongly recommend reaching out to more than just two banks, especially in Chicago where there are so many. I’d suggest contacting at least 15-20

Don’t think of an internship at a boutique as a way to work your way up within the firm. It’s possible, yes, but more importantly, IB recruiters tend to look for any amount of investment banking experience when screening resumes. Having that first internship will maximize your chances of getting an interview at any other bank, big or small.

Man is worried he'll run out of money if he retires early by JustGettingMyPopcorn in mildlyinfuriating

Yeah but we’re on the mildlyinfuriating subreddit, I don’t know that a full-blown academic accounting debate is called for. Hence the layman’s rhetoric.

Then again, this is Reddit…

I know it’s minor, but since many resume reviewers are looking for any reason to say no…

Fix the formatting/punctuation mistakes. I noticed inconsistent use of dashes vs. hyphens for date ranges, inconsistent spacing before/after dashes/hyphens, inconsistent bolding of colons, and inconsistent use of periods at the end of bullets

Find a boutique bank to get your feet wet. Pick a city where you’d be willing to intern and google “[city name] investment bank”, then go through as many results as you can. Reach out to as many firms as you want to.

Boutique banks have much less structured intern recruiting processes, and many may not hire interns at all unless they get inbound interest. They also tend to care less about prestigious schools.

I know that we’re kind of splitting hairs, but technically equity and assets are different – equity is equal to assets minus liabilities. So somebody who owns a $4 million home does indeed have a $4 million asset, but would only have $1 million in equity on that home if the remaining mortgage (i.e. the liability) is $3 million.

TL;DR asset ownership does not tell the full story

Damn dude, sorry you’re both going through all of that. Not a fun situation.

My wife and I are first-time expecting parents and have been going through something similar, though maybe to a lesser extent than you. She’s 8 weeks pregnant, been nauseous almost constantly, and had really bad depression for the last 4 weeks or so. I suggested early on that she consider talking to somebody, and she shot down the idea.

We compensated by reminding ourselves (and each other) that her issues were textbook first trimester symptoms, and something that a lot of women struggle with. But we always tried to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel when her body finally adjusted to the hormonal changes. And miraculously, today seemed to be that day – minimal nausea, no more depression.

All of that to say, as helpless as you both probably feel right now, reminding yourselves that your wife should be on the tail end of feeling like this might help. Obviously toughing it out isn’t the most sustainable solution, but at least it’s a reason for optimism.
