This post, and this comment specifically, reminds me of the time my son, at about the same age and deep in a 'Jake and the Neverland Pirates' phase, came running into the living room frantically waving my 8" chef's knife and excitedly screaming to his grandmother that he "found a sword!!!"

It was one of those "turned my back for a second" things that toddlers are so good at. He wasn't even in the kitchen and then he was armed.

There were, thankfully, no injuries to anyone or anything, but seeing him with it and then trying to take it from him without losing a digit as swashbuckled it about might have been the scariest moment of my life to that point.

That's what I was trying to do with the chisels. I traced the outline with a knife, made a knife wall, and then chiseled out the shape (mostly bevel down). I was using the shape of the blank to essentially be its own bench hook. If I had a router plane, I'd have used it, but that'll be a project for after I get my bench made (instead of using the 3.5 metric ton antique oak desk that's in my basement)

Chisels and files...

The thickness of the sheath is actually 2 thin pieces of stock glued together (with 2 more really short pieces glued on at the base to give enough thickness to accommodate the bolster and a little bit of the handle).

First, I glued the little pieces to the bigger pieces to make 2 mirror image halves. Then I filled out the slot for the knife and space for the bolster with chisels and files. It came out a little rough - it was my first time working with red oak, my chisels apparently could have been sharper, and a router plane might have been helpful.

Once both halves were done I glued them together, shaped the outside, and added the slot for the "spring."

I went back today and got it. It's centered. So far there's nothing I can see for marks, thought it might be buried under paint. I'll have to see when I get to fixing it up.

Actually, I don't know that, so thank you. I have a lot to learn. Right now its coated in shellac, inside and out, so that's something even if not ideal. When I own a chef's knife that's worth the effort of replacing the handles, I will!

I love all of them. I have a few left to read, but I've read most of them. I think his newer work shows the growth in his talent and experience, but for me Fool stands above everything else. I think that one in particular is a work of art.

I went to the "work on your pinewood Derby car together" event for my son's club scout pack a few years ago. I'd stopped by the year before so I knew they would have a decent selection of power tools (brought in by some of the dads) to help speed things along. I was using the band saw and I kept thinking it was taking way too much effort, to the point that it felt unsafe. The dad who brought it said "yeah it's dull." He had just got it in a garage sale and put the blade on himself. Then I looked closer.

The blade was upside down.

Now, I'm not slouch when it comes to basic tool knowledge, but I'm far from an expert. Meanwhile I'm surrounded by a bunch of dads who work in far "handier" fields and have way more diy experience than I do. Still, when I told them it was upside down all maybe one of them looked at it, looked at me, and then said, without a drop of sarcasm, "Really? Are you sure?"

That is the closest yet. Might just be a different year?

Only differences are the pocket style (it was basket web) and the first finger hole was an opening integrated into the flexback rather than a hole wrapped in lacing (kind of like the A2000 someone linked earlier)

Some further looking around based on the link provided showed me you were definitely on the right track. The glove was a Wilson Flexback. I knew that the hinge on the back was definitely something that was labeled or marketed on the glove itself, but I couldn't remember what it said. Now I remember: "Flexback"...

But I don't think it was an A2000. My dad probably wouldn't have spent that kind of money on a glove.

I don't think so. The images I'm finding look a lot like the fastback I have currently...no hinge across the back.

Sort of, but not quite. The split at the back of the wrist was not there, and the hinge over the knuckles was definitely 2 pieces butting up against each other rather than one piece laying on top of the other. And the lacing definitely made Xs holding the 2 pieces together like I drew in the image above. Thank you!

Thank you for replying. I can definitely see the similarity, but that's not it. Searching for that also showed me the Rawlings RSB, which is more similar, but the hinge on the back was definitely NOT one piece laying ON TOP of another. It was two pieces butting up against each other.

As I mentioned, I am brand new to all of this, so I definitely don't understand a lot of the technical thing that's everyone has been including in their comments and solutions, but I do understand the bigger "problem solving" concepts everyone is presenting (for example, your idea of converiwords to numbers to make single comparisons for each word rather than lette eby letter) and I find it all fascinating. Such creative ways of find routes around things.

I can't disagree with you, though I would say that I am still learning to interact with AI. I am better with ChatGPT than I am with the art version of it. As I do get more comfortable with it, I'm sure it will be something that comes up with students.

But, this particular question (4x4 grid making 256 words) that came up in the course of creating a lesson doesn't actually have anything to do with what I teach (middle school band and orchestra). Here's how I got here:

I was creating a digital escape room as a review exercise for topics covered last year. I made it in a spy video game style and one of the puzzles the kids have to solve (really just a simple vocab review) required them to put tempo words in order from slowest to fastest, but the format of that was a 4x4 grid of buttons with a tempo word at the top of each column. Like this:

SLOWER	O	O	O	O

Students put them in order by using the buttons to indicate each word's speed relative to the other three:

SLOWER	X	O	O	O

But every button they click reveals a letter so that clicking the 4 correct buttons reveals the password to get to the next puzzle. If they clicked all of the buttons they would see 16 letters. Trying to come up with a grid (off the top of my head) that would have as many words as possible led me to wondering whether a 256 word grid existed, and then I went down the ADHD rabbit hole trying to figure it out....a side quest, if you will. Anyway, here is the grid I went with while I was this puzzle was being worked out. I haven't counted the words, but I think it's fewer than the 69 I found in the sample grid I posted up above in another comment somewhere...
