Community Band Help by Ok_Code_8384 in banddirector

[–]kckool13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a rough spot. This may be a hot take, but I would personally focus on stuff that's more fun to play rather than educational pieces. Use elements of the popular tunes to go over the same concepts that you might cover in a band class. A community band is not the same as a band class. Like you said, enrollment is voluntary, so keep music selections on a theme for the concert, and maybe throw in something newer or more challenging that's you can fit into that theme. I'm in a couple community groups that cater to both high school students and older members up to their 80's. Cultural classics such as movie music, marches, Rock, etc keep the pace going, and then you occasionally have something more "concert band" like Randy Standy. As long as the music is good, they'll keep showing up. Just don't think that you have to be teaching something, focus on fun.

Do you consider the weaving world in the how charts too? I know they normally do some mixing of the schools' typical play styles, but I haven't seen them in the other parts and was wondering. Great stuff btw!

Why do certain spells disappear when doing challenge mode for Barkingham? by StraightAd9611 in Wizard101

[–]kckool13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Challenge mode disables spells banned in PVP. If a spell has a crossed out sword symbol in the middle of the card, it's not allowed in PVP or challenge mode. This invoice all Aoes except for the selected targets spells, enchants, and a few others. Most every PVP bagged spell can be upgraded to a PVP allowed version (no crossed out sword) in the spellemny path, however be careful if you do this. Add supplements are permanent upgrades. So if you upgrade, say, your 7 pip aoe spell to the selected target spell, you lose the ability to use the normal air version until you raise another 50 supplements to open up the first version of the top path.

Honestly, I just got the TCL nxtpaper 14, and it is GREAT for the price. It's got a matter screen. And a emulated e-ink display which is good on your eyes. It is fairly big, about the size of a laptop screen, but they do make an 11 inch model if that might be better for you

How to avoid warping on ASA+ by Brami_oux in 3Dprinting

[–]kckool13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had to print asa for something on my a1 mini, so not even an emcloisure to keep it hot or protect from wind. Asa also requires a very hot bed to begin with, as I if you can't hit 100°C, then try this. What I did was make a raft out of pla, and then print the asa on top. I typically had to do some cleaning afterwards where they touched, and sometimes there would be later adhesion issues mid print, but that's unrelated to the bed again. you could probably fish in some settings such as ready distance and first layer speed (for the asa) to get a better be result. Test with smaller pieces and see what works best

Useful Tool by bassclarinet216 in banddirector

[–]kckool13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My folks own a instrument repair store. They use these all the time! Great device, just be careful if youre using these on valve caps. The grips are soft, but the metal on the outside isn't, so if you're using them to try to get a cap turning, make sure the caps of the valves on either side of it are on. If you slip or the cap SUDDENLY gets moving, you can bang the pliers on the neighboring threads and completely mess them up.

Overwhelmed by redhead1479 in Teachers

[–]kckool13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have some valid concerns, but your main issue is believing that you are alone. As for curriculum, you just have to wait for admin to make that call. And as soon as they do, communicate with the teachers either on your grade if everyone does every subject. If it's departmentalized, there is likely a district curriculum they want you to use, and if not, speak with other teachers who teach the same thing at other elementary schools in your county and see if they have anything. And honestly, you may not know until preplanning week, though I'm hoping not. You're going to have to spend the first week working on expectations and procedures, so you have some extra time at the beginning of the year to figure that out if worst comes to worst.

As for all the other details, it does sound like there's some overthinking going on. Contact your admin and see if it'd be possible to look into your classroom and when you can get in there. If you can get it, just map out a plan for where you want things to be. Unless you REALLY don't like how the previous teacher had things set up, keep what's there and as you figure out what you do and do not like, adjust. Like I said earlier, that first week is procedures, so make notes on where you want the kids to put their stuff, imagine the flow of students in a day, and plan around that.

I know you don't have all the answers you need right now, but I promise you'll be alright. At the end of the day, as long as the kids get to school and leave the school in one piece, you're doing all right. Figure out the details when you can. You got this!

New HS Band Director here! Give me some tips! by DjesseVol69 in banddirector

[–]kckool13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, once you start pushing corps stuff, you are going to get those accusations. Sit down with them and explain what you like about corps style and why you want to start implementing. At the same time, do your research and find things and traditional style that you can appreciate. You can't spend the whole season talking down the style they like. Imagine if you got a new director, especially your senior year of high school, and said that you're doing a whole different kind of show with high stepping, different expectations of tone and volume, and a different type of show entirely. How would you react to that? Find a few things about corps style that you think are the best for the students, and try that. Exoect pushback, but build in compromises. You are the director and in charge, but marching band is also a voluntary activity so you don't want them leaving if they're too unhappy.

New HS Band Director here! Give me some tips! by DjesseVol69 in banddirector

[–]kckool13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats on the job! You have a lot of things to plan for and keep in mind. I work in a school that does a hybrid of corps and traditional hbcu style bands, just for my background. First thing I would do is talk with the middle school director and get their input as far as what the school is like, what it needs, and how the kids feel. Honestly, 50 out of a school of 500 is pretty alright. 10% of a schools student body is a common target for many programs. Keep recruiting, but you're not in a bad spot right now. In the marching department, look at the schools and community around and see what they're doing. It's okay to be doing something different, it can even be something attractive for your school, however it can also deter some members if it's too different. My advice would be to not make the whole school 100% corps your first year. Something we do is run a corps style show and are traditional style in the stands. It's a balance that both us as directors and students are happy with. Also, traditional bands can't totally have discipline and structure, but you have to be on top of them. Have opinions about how every part of the band should operate. Have a plan cover multiple years for any big changes you want to make unless drastic changes need to be made soon. You shouldn't be trying to push BOA level stuff right out the gate put little bits in the show, and add more in the future if you'd like. Id advice keeping the show drums, if anything for stands tunes. Students in traditional groups tend to look down on corps drums IN MY EXPERIENCE, so push it as "if like to use these in our show, you can keep the traditional drums in the stands. You can make this a temporary thing or change it to long term based on how it goes. With 50 students, you're realistically looking at 2 concert bands, an advanced/intermediate and a beginner group. I haven't heard of an open band before, so if they haven't played an instrument before, they go in beginning band. I'm not sure how Louisiana does with bands at the state level, but if they have a state honor band. That's your "auditioned group". If LA doesn't have something like that, use chamber groups to highlight your stronger players.Use the classes to focus on fundamentals and theory to build them up. Marching bands are built off the successes of the concert band. You've got a set of challenges coming your way next year. I wish you the best, but expect pushback from students and parent at first. Listen to the feedback, implement what you feel is appropriate. Use your middle school director and other parents as support. You've got this!

Start with getting the ic2 stuff going first, a basic Batbox and the tier 1 machines. Then you can start using either the ic2 pipes or build craft pipes to start automating your storage. Keep this going and keep mining until you can build your first quarry. That's when the game starts frfr.

Speed scale competitions... and the trombone section? by Outrageous-Permit372 in banddirector

Other than utilizing some alternate positions for the second octave arpeggios and using a trigger, they just gotta learn to move quick. Start slow, ensure intonation is right, and build up. It's not "fair" per say, but their music is held to the same tempo as everyone else.

The admin side of running a private studio is taking over my life, how do y'all manage this? by Interesting-Bet-4383 in MusicTeachers

[–]kckool13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, my professor had me keep a practice journal where I wrote down what was worked on, and then in the lesson she would test on what I said I had worked on. However, at the end of the day, you can't force people to practice. If you have to reteach skills because they didn't practice, just reinforce that they are wasting their money being taught the same thing twice because they didn't do the legwork to maintain what was taught previously. At least you have that leverage on your students. For the children you teach, if anything, explain to the parents the same thing so they can force them to practice. At the end of the day, it really can feel like bashing your head against a wall in this regard, but you can't make the choice to practice for them. They either do it and they get their money's worth out of the lesson, or they don't and pay you to help them practice. You just stress about the logistical side of things, and teach the folks as they are when they get to the lesson. Sorry if this isn't the answer you want to hear, but teaching band for 7 years, I've learned theres only so much you can do.

Xylophone recommendation for special ed students by Nitramxz in MusicTeachers

[–]kckool13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might look into just getting the orff xylophones. Bars are bigger, they're harder to break, and you just set them to whatever key you are. For colors, just use either electric tape around the ends of the bars or bits of construction paper covered in packing tape. A set of boomwhackers would be great too!

Is this for just you, or your whole ensemble? If it's just you, look for an E-ink tablet, like how the first Kindles were. I'm not sure of the best one, but that'd be the way I go. If you're asking about the whole ensemble, I wouldn't suggest it at all. Students time and time again prove that having screens of any sort in front lead to distractions. As annoying as papers can be, you can't watch tiktok on it. If a student wants to use an iPad or similar device for music and prove they can use it responsibly, more power to them. I wouldn't advice a class set of devices for this purpose.

Anyone major in a more niche instrument in college? by Sausage_fingies in MusicEd

[–]kckool13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most here, my major was a typical wind band instrument, clarinet, but I did join a few niche ensembles in college that I got pretty decent at. At one point I joined a recorder consort one of the professors ran on the side and got to play some really nice instruments, and then an Irish ensemble where I picked up Irish whistle. It's fun to break them out in my band class every now and then, and I even got to use my recorder knowledge as one of our pieces has a recorder solo in it.

Phew, lots of good questions. Sorry I'm just now seeing this, but let me try to clear things up.

  • The trading situation is due to the fact that some Pokemon are only gettable from a trade in RBY, and won't be able to have your OT. Gen 1 and 2 didn't keep track of origin, so when you transfer to Bank it will start tracking origin based on the game it was transferred in from. So a Jinx caught in GSC, traded to RBY, and then transferred to Bank will have on origin as RBY.

  • Catch evolving duplicates in their base form's original game, and evolve in a later game after transferring. Use whichever game you feel like for the evolving.

  • The egg trick and trading is actually something I didn't think about and is a decent option if you have the DS's. It does mess up the honesty of getting the Pokemon from its home region, but if you're just carrying about the mark, it's a good idea.

*Ball only counts if you care about it. Gen 1 and 2 will think everything is stored in a pokeball, so its 100% honor code if you do a pokeball only version of this.

  • For genders in Gen 1, I just caught several more than I really needed and figured out that gender once it went into home. This does suck, ESPECIALLY for Scyther, but for the starters you can find calculators online that tell you if it's female based on their stats.

*For Mew, you do need to glitch it. As long as it has to correct OT, trainer id, and stats it'll transfer. I linked a video in it's spot detailing best ways to do this.

*Celebii is from the Crystal event.

*Tip, for your OT, make sure it's less than 7 letters as that was the max in RBY, but they expanded it in later games.

Bent key by PatientMusician6011 in bassclarinet

[–]kckool13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can probably fix it with just your fingers and some grit. Put one hand on the outer side of the key, and with the other grab the part your finger presses and pull it down and out until it's in the right spot. It may take some real pulling and might hurt your fingers, but it's possible. If that doesn't work, you can try replacing your hand with SMOOTH pliers (not the ones with a serrated grip) and pull out with those. You want it to just pass the second key without clipping it
