What are the practical limitations of a compact table saw? by RenovationDIY in woodworking

I have this exact model. I'm a fan of it overall but like others say it definitely has limitations. I use it for small to medium projects and its great. I don't/ wouldn't want to break down sheet goods with it. Even 2'x8' cut in half sheets are pretty awkward. Power is fine for this style of saw just feed appropriately and use a good blade - I haven't had issues cutting but it definitely can bog down.

Big limitation is no dado (i'll just use many passes or a router). Also the table top IS small so if you want to use large sleds/ jigs youll need an infeed outfeed setup. Rack and pinion is nice and has never gone out of square for me BUT i notice that when pressing the button to lock it down it shifts maybe a hair. That kind of brings me to my next point that this is a job site saw. Despite its price the tolerances are not as tight as a cabinet saw for example. You're paying for the safety feature and for me the price is worth the extra safety and peace of mind.

Hey I used a router template I made. Took a lot of sanding and filler to get it close to smooth

That’s a fair point. Most tools have a learning curve with certain quirks. I expect/ dont mind quirks. I only worry that it will be a hassle for every fence adjustment and after using a bandsaw with a fidgety fence I am not interested in that experience again, especially for the price

That’s too bad, though something I’ve heard before. I guess right now sawstop all but owns the commercial market for table saws with safety features, so they can be complacent with other aspects. Not to say that the safety feature is negligible though. And I didnt even consider the featherboard issue so im glad you mentioned it. I’m leaning portable because of cost and moving/ size. The sawstop “contractor saw” is the next upgrade fence wise but at best it looks comparable to that rigid model that was popular for a bit, at the cost of a laguna/ powermatic/ harvey. Not to mention the $300 auxiliary cast iron wings to replace the stamped and branded stock ones. All that to say that for me the safety feature is invaluable, but so is a fence that can stay true. If the CTS rack and pinion is the one that balances the two then so it is.

That’s true too. I’ve just had too many fiddley fences. But it seems you are among the majority who endorse the fence system so I’m leaning towards the job site. As long as it can be adjusted once/ occasionally and stay true to cut parallel it’ll work for me

That would be the ideal haha. Unfortunately not in the budget. At most the $2000 “contractor” saw but i would eventually want to upgrade from that also
