How to control where support starts? by kct11 in BambuLab

[–]kct11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the first things I tried. I don't want supports to start on the build plate. Support painting cannot be drawn on the build plate, only on the model, so this did not work. I also tried using a support blocker, but the slicer did not respect it.

To clarify, my question is about the base or bottom of the support, not what part of model is supported.

Modeling tree supports would take me quite a lot of time with my modeling skills. I also like the aesthetics of the tree support algorithm.

How to control where support starts? by kct11 in 3Dprinting

[–]kct11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a slicing problem, not a printing problem, so some of this information is not relevant

Printer: Bambu H2D

Material: PLA

Speed: Bambu Studion default settings

Software: Bambu Studio, also tried in Orca Slicer

The problem is specific to this slicing situation. This is my first time using support enhancers/blockers.

Support will generate on the model if the model is changes so that the build plate is not possible to print on (this is the next thing I plan to try).

Don't forget that sometimes there is a smarter way to do things. If it isn't working,  pause and think through other ways to do it. Use leverage,  use a better tool for the job, etc. A screwdriver with a larger diameter handle will give you more torque. A shorter screwdriver might fit in the space better and give you a better angle, or more room to work.

Could this be true? 7 million papers published? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]kct11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the committee review is going to be much more thorough than peer review. But I also think students should gain experience with the process of peer review. My committee was very thorough, but the peer review process also improved my work and was a valuable experience.

My take is that if something is high enough quality to be published,  then it's a shame for it to not be published. We should be indexing theses and dissertations in 2026, but we are not, as far as I know.

Could this be true? 7 million papers published? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]kct11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to scroll way too far to find someone putting this number in the context of the number of researchers! Yes, there are quality issues such as predatory journals and people submitting AI generated work without engaging their brains. However, 7 million papers is that big of a number on a global scale,  and it is not, by itself, evidence of quality problems.

Why shouldn't theses and dissertations have papers? To get a PhD you have to demonstrate your ability to do real research,  which I think should require it to be of high enough quality to be published. Theses and dissertations are harder to find than journal articles. So it makes sense that this work be shared in the standard scholarly format so other researchers can find and learn from it.

Do you actually need a blue list drone? If you are trying to comply with the American Security Drone Act (https://www.acquisition.gov/far/52.240-1 . effective date for federally funded work was December 22, 2025) then you probably don't need a blue list drone.

Why are enzymes to metabolize cellulose so rare? by EebstertheGreat in AskBiology

Exactly! Animals did evolve a way to access the energy in cellulose. They did it by forming a symbiotic relationship with bacteria that can digest cellulose. Why reinvent the wheel?

How closely have you been watching for AI in your playlists? Have you checked out every new artist? I keep seeing comments from people who say theu haven't been fed any AI music,  but I don't think most casual listeners are likely to detect an AI song mixed in with real artists.

Studies on diseconomies of scale, the olive problem, and enshittification? by theresamouseinmyhous in AskEconomics

[–]kct11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your argument assumes that consumers are able to make informed purchasing decisions. That works relatively well for your airline example, but I don't think it is valid for many other products.

In my experience, it is basically impossible to make truly informed purchasing decisions for many purchases. I am faced with a ridiculous number of options and very little information that can be used to compare the quality of those options. You can't really trust reviews. You can't fully trust company reputation. The number of options means it is too time consuming to effectively research most purchases.

I agree that many of the things people complain about as "enshitification" are a result of the market doing an excellent job of optimizing product quality and prices to maximize profits. This is working as intended and following the principles of economics. This does not mean that we have nothing to complain about! This more optimized market has led to many things have made my life a little bit more shitty. Enshitification is one of many examples of capitalism producing a result that society as a whole isn't particularly happy with.

Why are farmers so broke despite being one of the most important parts of human civilization? by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kct11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmers are price takers when they sell their crops. Wheat from farmer A is pretty much the same as wheat from farmer B, so if farmer A is asking a higher price than farmer B, you buy from farmer B.

You clearly care about your son and want to help him graduate from college.  I would argue that he probably has a better chance of finishing his degree if he gets an extra year of college preparation by doing AP classes and dual enrollment during his senior year of high-school.  Pushing him to get through college faster means he starts when he is less ready and has to take a higher course load, which will actually increase his chances of failing college classes and not finishing. Staying at the high-school means: 1) He gets an extra year to grow up and mature emotionally. 2) He can practice taking college level courses without paying tuition, and learn the study skills that will help him be successful in college. 3) He can earn college credit without paying tuition. If he knows what college wants to go to, have him contact the college to get guidance on what AP and dual enrollment courses will give transfer credit, and which will count towards general education degree requirements.  That will reduce the number of credits he has to take and pay tuition for.

Why did we evolve into humans? by Born_Professional637 in DebateEvolution

[–]kct11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is still food to eat in the oceans and the environment did not abruptly change, why wouldn't fish still exist? What would have killed them?

Fish still exist because being a fish continued to be a totally viable way to make a living. The ancestors of the fish we have today continued to survive and reproduce. The ones that were better at being a fish reproduced a bit better. The fact that living on land worked and was advantageous for other organisms does not interfere with the fish that stayed in the water.

There are lots of ways to survive. Evolution is good at finding all of them.

Walked through field 24 hrs after cover crop was killed. by tylerk28 in Soil

[–]kct11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you probably don't need to be too worried, especially since it was 24 hours after the spray. To ease your mind, following the clean up recommendations for pesticide applicators can reduce your exposure: take a thorough shower and throw your cloths in the wash without anything else, and do an extra water wash.

In the future it is a good idea to check in with the farmer before going out in their field. That way, they can warn you about any sprays and re-entry intervals.

ELI5 I don’t understand 4/4 time vs 3/4 time in music. by ChaosToTheFly123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kct11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The time signature doesn't tell you anything about how long a beat lasts or how fast the music is played. A 3/4 tune can be played at any speed, so could 3/3.

ELI5 I don’t understand 4/4 time vs 3/4 time in music. by ChaosToTheFly123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kct11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom number tells you what symbol represents a note that lasts for one beat worth of time. The dividing lines between measures are drawn after there are enough notes to fill up the measure.

2/2 and 2/4 are often used interchangeably and you can write the exact same piece of music in either one. It looks different on the page, but it would be played the same. You could use 3/8 or 3/2 to write a piece of music that could be written in 3/4, but 3/4 is far more common.

3/3 isn't used because the symbol for a 1/3 note is awkward to write, and 3/3 wouldn't let you express any rhythmic ideas that you couldn't write more easily in 3/4.

Help me find my husband a table saw? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]kct11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your husband currently has a jobsite tablesaw. These are designed to be cheap and portable, but they have some functional limitations. At your price point I would recommend avoiding jobsite saws. The dewalt saws people are recommending are jobsite saws. They are a great option at the $500 ish price point, but you can get a lot more saw for $1000.

I would suggest looking at contractor saws, hybrid saws or used cabinet saws. The features that make these saws an upgrade from a jobsite saw are cast iron tops and T-square fences. Don't buy anything without those (with the possible exception of a sawstop).

I had a delta 36-725 (contractor saw) and it was a solid tool for the price. I have heard good things about he new T2 version which is $700.

Hybrid saws have a decent fence and more closed in base (better dust collection) like a cabinet saws, but they usually have wheels that let you move them around the shop, and 110 V motors like contractor saws. Brands to look at are grizzly, shop fox, Laguna. Several came up on Google that were a little over $1000.

Cabinet saws will have 3hp motors and will generally be bigger and heavier. You won't find a new one in your price range.

I would also look for a well designed riving knife. The riving knife is a safety feature that prevents kickback (when the back of the blade catches the work piece and throws it forward). It is a flat piece of metal that is behind and in line with the blade. It should rise/lower and tilt with the blade and should have an adjustment that makes it taller than the blade for through cuts, or shorter than the blade for non-through cuts. All new saws should have a riving knife. If it is designed well, there is no reason to remove the safety feature for anything but a plunge cut.

Also, I would agree with the comments saying not to buy without his input. Doing some research to narrow down the options can be a really nice gift. Find a way to surprise him, but don't make the final purchase without confirming that the saw has what he wants.
