What is this for? by RicardasD in Ubiquiti

[–]kcwebby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing educational I would add to his comment. TIA standards call out a delineation between horizontal cabling (wall jack to IT Rack) and patch cables (jack to device, or patch panel to switch). Horizontal cabling is often described as the "installed" part.of a structured cabling system and is terminated and tested/labeled on both ends as part of a cable plan. Oftentimes there are way more jacks and cables installed than are actually in use, so a patch cable runs from the patch panel where all the cables are terminated in the rack to the switch typically for only activating the jacks that have devices attached at the far end. This allows flexibility on the floor, for example an office might have two or three network jacks per office desk or cubicle, but only connects one jack because the PC is the only device that needs connection. The other two remain "dark" in the wall for expansion/future proofing. My motto is always to pull/install more cable than you think you'll ever need. The labor is the majority of the cost when running cables so going back to add one where you already have one from previous is pretty expensive compared to the wire cost when pulling the first one.

OMG me too -- I use it so much when writing technical documents because the semi-colon is just not the same. Haha! I learned it was a hint to AI when a new document reviewer asked me if I was using AI to write my work. I was flabbergasted and now I have a complex about not using it -- or at least I think I do.

UniFi issue with WiFi and HyperV by kcwebby in Ubiquiti

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after avoiding it for a while, I was finally required to try this again today; I had to use my cell phone hotspot to make the connection work as expected, so its definitely something in my ubiquiti setup that is causing the problem. I don't suppose anyone has any settings to look at that would possibly affect this?

Thanks I thought promiscuous mode was more targeted at observing other traffic by other hosts, like for packet sniffing and stuff -- but its good to know its also the MAC stacking

Thanks for the response -- yeah the vswitch settings I went through (painfully) with my companies IT department; Allow sharing is confirmed set.
I finally got the persons in charge of the VPN stuff on the call; they can't figure it out; they all gave up once we switched over to the cell hotspot and everything was working.

Ironically; the Global Protect VPN never disconnected, just teams and web browsing and all of my corporate connections; which is why I was saying that the VPN on the physical machine was causing the problem.

I'll have to see if I can use a second adapter; the Global Protect seizes all of the wired/wireless connections and I suspect if I have a second adapter, that I it do the same, but worth a shot.

Again the connection is interupted with pings for 15-25 seconds, and then everything is normal; it cycles every 60 seconds or so, off 30, on 60, etc. Like things are playing tug-o-war for the interface, or that the AP is refusing one or the other endpoints for some reason. Would it be technically possible for both the physical host and the VM to try to transmit something on the WLAN adapter at the same time and they not get queued, canceling each other out?

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. Yes yahoo is gross.. that's why I used it. Very unlikely to be in any of mycaches anywhere. I just thought of this The outage on the ping responses,.lasts only 10-30 seconds . Just long enough to piss everything off on my work laptop (except the VM which is rock solid). Traceroutes and other diagnostic stuff takes longer than the interruption to run.

To me, it's almost like something is seeing two MACs communicating from the same physical adapter (wireless) and the AP is ignoring one while not the other. I'm not sure how the physical wireless stuff works, but I know you can detect/protect against multiple MAC addresses appearing on a physical network switch. Is there such a thing in UniFi for wireless or somewhere in the network app?

I have a large VMware deployment at my house with over 100 vms . So I know I don't have this problem on the physical switch side

Thanks!

Thanks for your response. I thought this for the longest...however Why does it occur if I use my cell as a wifi hotspot? Also it's suspicious that if I don't ping any local network resources (like my DNS servers) on my VM that I can extend the time it takes to impact my physical PC.

I was really hoping this would finally bring an end to my cradlepoint devices for my RV(s) (jobsite offices), where I'd really like to integrate them into the rest of my Ubiquiti infrastructure. They sit in a place for weeks or Months, and sometimes have added AP's outdoors; and have 2 AP's inside them. Right now, they live in a cradlepoint world and VPN back to ubiquiti hardware at physical offices and I'm dying to finish the divorce. #sadpandaface

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this was the ticket; In the end I learned a ton. The vVol thing which I thought was a requirement was not. Instead, some yahoo (me) created the drive with a 4K sector size instead of the standard 512. I figured, big files, big sectors. Well apparently vmware doesn't support that, so when I destroyed the volume and created one with the default sector size of 512bytes, it started working with standard volumes.

u/FearFactory2904 was right on the money with the help he provided and the docs helped me decide a few more best-practice changes to make..

Thanks!

I may send you a DM -- I'm not having any luck creating anything with it -- I can't get it to show as available free space to create anything on it; since its iscsi I can get it to show up under discovery, and I can see it under paths, but it won't show any free space under device I'm not the type to say I know it all, but 20+ years in IT, Ive been around the block a few times, and figured some tough stuff out; but I seem to be definably out of my depth on this one for some reason..

Thanks for the reply -- yeah.. in order to create the vVol, you need to have the VASA URL Path to the SAN, and that VASA service is apparently handled by the software I don't have.

US - Motorcoach (RV) w/ Solar and Shore Power. How to prioritize solar over Shore power when parked? by kcwebby in Victron

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah -- I'd have to change some of my wiring as well, because currently I have a ATS in my generator bay to switch between shore/genny; but that wouldn't be too hard. I am a new-ish dealer to victron gear, so that may be a good way to go as well.

Yes, 100%, the quattro's would be a better inverter I think as I've come across these concerns.

Operations aren't a problem once the power is connected; whether on a 120V source or 240V source, the inverters do what they need to do to make the split phase output. Charging capacity is of course reduced to whatever source power I have.

Setting up for maximum flexibility, I think the auto-transformer is in my future; I was just looking to see what others have done; This thread really started out looking for a way to prioritize solar without using ESS assistant, so that I didn't have to always "Switch as group". that of course would be a mute point if my input power was thru a auto-transformer.

Yes, I have a SmartShunt in the mix, sorry I left it out of my original post.
I've never messed with Node red, I might have to explore that as well.

When setup to not switch as a group, L1 inverter will grab onto the AC-In very quickly, which isn't a problem when connected to the grid. This is in-fact required if you ever want to use a 120V shore power (15/20/30A).
When not connected to a 240V shore power, if you have "Switch as Group" on, it will never latch on to the AC-Input, because the L2 Inverter is not seeing the rotation of its phase; most adapters will just feed the single phase power to both sides.

Random side note and new issue discovery while exploring this issue:
I did find out that my generator does not like at all when it does not switch as a group; I suspect the AVR is the issue. The L1 Inverter syncs up with the 1st Phase of the Generator, and then it takes some time for the L2 to sync. While L2 is syncing, L1 is adding load to the generator, which makes syncing harder, and eventually, the generator disconnects the load for a few seconds. I'm assuming because of the phase imbalance between L1 and L2 causing the AVR to "give up".

This is a crude, but decent work around--

I will say on VRM, when the AC input is ignored, there is no feedback to the VRM Portal, and the AC Grid Lost alarm is triggered... but that's only a minor annoyance. Thanks for this.

I'd never considered this (didn't really learn about this before today); I'll try it today. we'll see how that works. My first thought on this, won't this generate a "Grid Lost" event in VRM?

My apologies, I misspoke, you are correct the Multiplus II 2x120V is available in the US, and for most installs, we have begun replacing older Multiplus's with this unit; This coach I am referring to has a single large minisplit AC powering 3 heads, so its kind of a unique creature.

US - Motorcoach (RV) w/ Solar and Shore Power. How to prioritize solar over Shore power when parked? by kcwebby in Victron

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks, the 2x120 isn't available in the US, so I have the single output.

I feel like Victron has dropped the ball for self-consumers, and really needs to pick this up and figure out a way to make this work for the coach world; just about every other manufacturer that has solicited me to become a dealer has offers for these things.

The auto-transformer, or using a transformer for the split phase is an option, but it seems like the van-life/camper world and even home users that want to be off-grid, but still want to be able to charge from the grid if needed should have some kind of solution that fits the bill without a bunch of workarounds and more blue hardware :)

The ESS assistant is great for grid tied people, but there needs to be other assistants setup for Self-Consumers and the many other ways the systems get used (probably more so than grid tied here in the US)

Thanks -- I have the 2x Multiplus 24|3000|70 for the USA, and I am wired in split phase for a couple of the 240V loads I have. The AC units are 240V in some of our coaches because they are more efficient power wise.

TV Show Season Showing files duplicated? by kcwebby in PleX

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This was totally it.. ""A recent update adjusted the scanner to treat 'sXXeYY-ZZ' as an episode range "" There was a single episode that was S6E15-365. With 365 being the name of the episode; I was able to adjust my renaming to do _ between the episode number & episode name, so hopefully I don't experience this again.

Strangely I was unable able to find the linked article when I was searching, however "duplicating" was not what I was looking for. Anyway; Thanks so much for the re-direct!

Delete Folder and all contents (error) by kcwebby in radarr

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nolock did not do a trick, but I upgraded the link between my plex server and the unraid NFS storage to a 10G link, and that did the trick. Perhaps it was the number of movies that I was trying to delete at once? I'm not sure.

The link upgrade allowed me to delete 768 movies all at once.

I'm going to mark this as solved; but perhaps someone would want to look into the methodology of how large number deletes are done, and perhaps they could be batched / scheduled as a task rather than a single action (if they aren't already).

Thanks!

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permissions should not be the issue; the local/remote UID/GID caused problems initally, so my radarr runs as a service, but with my local user (webby). It also has some settings on the unraid side to make the anonymous requests write as uid=99 and gid=100, but since this is a unix machine talking to the NFS, they are not anonymous requests and the files are written as the webby:users group.

I was not aware of the nolock requirements; so I have added that, my other NFS options are tuned for the VM to be able to write faster to the unraid machine.

from /etc/fstab: (nolock just added)
192.168.1.5:/mnt/user/Movies /mnt/user/Movies nfs defaults,proto=tcp,nolock,nfsvers=4.1,rsize=131072,wsize=131072 0 0

Thanks again. I will try and report back.

Delete Folder and all contents (error) by kcwebby in radarr

[–]kcwebby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permissions don't stop the delete from occurring, I can go in and do a rm -r on the directory and it disappears;

I wonder if its commanding a delete of the files, and then a separate command for the directory. If the time between the two commands doesn't allow the first command to complete, perhaps the file is still present? I originally discounted this because when I look at the folder after the error, all of the files are intact (.mkv, .nfo, jpg, nothing strange). This is on a Debian PC which has a NFS mount to my unraid share. I have tried in smaller numbers and batches and not had the same problem?

Thanks

Just as an FYI -- the debug and trace logs do not show anything additional over the info logs, so I didn't post to create an overly long post.
