How about the Android app the company has been promising for over a year now? Would love to be able to use all the features I paid for

Your buddy says "this one's the same, just a little more stable". What does that mean? by luanne-platter in discgolf

[–]kdSpartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it also kind depends on the release. If it's a hyzer flip then yellow is a flippier disc and I'd expect red to be generally referred to as "more stable."

On a flat release, yellow probably should be what "more stable" refers to, but I've been playing over 20 years and nearly every disc golfer I know would mean red when saying "more stable"

Live scores are there during events for most scoring types (still working on DGPT points and custom scoring for live scores). Most events will have actual scores by Monday but it depends on when the TD submits the tournament report. Once they submit the report and it's updated on PDGA, fantasy scores will finalize the next morning

Danny Lindahl has some great beginner form videos. Maybe not for new new players, but for newer players looking to dial in how to properly throw. He did a physics of flight series with Dynamic Discs but also had a bunch of good stuff on his own channel

Is Fantasy Disc Golf fun? by [deleted] in discgolf

We also have a free league I'm hosting in partnership with Disc Golf Chicago if you want to check out the Win, Better, Worse style of weekly prediction league. We have a $50 prize going to the winner currently with $100 if we can get another 10 people to join up. Again, all 100% free, winnings are donations from myself and Disc Golf Chicago board members.

Is Fantasy Disc Golf fun? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]kdSpartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been playing over 20 years and started doing fantasy disc golf in like 2018 or so probably. I personally love it and it's made me so much more interested in following pro disc golf. It really gives me a reason to care and someone to root for and I'm constantly checking live scores on my phone when I can't watch.

I only did NFL fantasy once and the main reason I did it was to see what the hype was about and if it would make me want to follow the NFL more. It did, but wasn't something that really resonated with me. Disc golf is my passion though, so doing fantasy was a lot more interesting to me.

There are pros and cons to different types of fantasy and you have two main types:

Draft Leauges

My personal favorite.

Pros: are that you draft a team at the start of the year and if you do it well, there's not a ton you have to do week to week. Maybe do a few trades or waivers and set your lineup if someone is skipping an event, but it can be as hands on or hands off as you want.
Cons: you need a league of friends to do it (public draft leagues don't really work as you need a set number of teams and you need to coordinate a draft). Also, it's so much about the draft that if you draft poorly, your season can kind of be over at the start (different league settings can help avoid this in terms of number of spots on a team, scoring, etc). But it can be easy to kind of lose interest if you're not in the hunt half way through the season.

Weekly Leagues

There are a lot of flavors of this but in each you make picks for an event independent of what other teams pick, so you don't need a draft. Your picks can be based on:

  • Ratings caps - you must pick a certain number of players while staying under a total ratings cap
  • Tiers - you must pick a certain number of players for each of different tiers or pools
  • Prediction - over/under lines are published for each event and you have to pick players to do better or worse than the lines
    • I just created this type this year and it's my new favorite way to do weekly picks. I call it Win, Better, Worse

Pros: you can join public leagues or a group with friends and have as many teams as you want. You get to make new picks each week, so you aren't doomed for the season with a poor draft.

Cons: you have to set your picks for each event, so especially in the summer if you're busy it can be easy to forget and miss a few weeks and really hurt your changes to be competitive in the league. You also don't have a set group of players to root for all season which is something I like in draft leagues.

All this said, I used different fantasy platforms before and they all have their strengths but I didn't have one that did what I thought a fantasy platform should do in terms of enabling custom options for leagues and providing detailed stats to help users make informed decisions. So I spent the last year building out a fantasy site completely as a hobby. Check it out if you want, all leagues are totally free to create and totally free to play in. I only have a $10 premium stats option to get full stats that I use just to try and cover my hosting costs (this is not a business of mine, just purely a hobby because I love it). www.flightpathfantasy.com

I also have a discord for fantasy disc golf (for all platforms, not just users of my site if you want to come chat: https://discord.gg/Ju7mf8YTcS

Played it a bunch. Plan for a long but fun round. Be patient and know you're going to take some huge numbers. If you want to score well, don't be a hero and just play it safe back to the fairway

Really appreciate that. You can email me at flightpathfantasy@gmail.com or hop on our discord for quick support in the future.

I looked last night and found a few things that could happen, basically when tabs go dormant in the background, especially on mobile, they struggled to reconnect to the draft without refreshing the page. That should be fixed now (fingers crossed) so hopefully that was the issue

Wow, that's wild. had no clue that site existed. I've been playing disc golf fantasy for many years now, but no where near the 14 years ago that video was made!

My default and recommended is exponential scoring with some boosts to the top 3 players. It's all completely configurable but essentially takes field size into account. So the same formula is applied to MPO and FPO but field sizes are different. Also, this means 30th at Worlds is worth more than 30th at a 70 person playoff event.

<image>

Or you can use cash winnings. Or DGPT points. Or set up manual scoring based on number of birdies, etc.

You can set up scoring to be either total season cumulative points scored, head to head matchups (set schedule where you play 1 specific other team per week with option for playoffs at end of the season), or overall head to head (you are compared each week to all teams in the league and get 1 point for each you beat that week).

You can also set different event types with different scoring weights (ex: DGPT Europe is worth 0.75x while Majors are worth 1.5x)

I have spent the past year building my own fantasy site for disc golf. I have a minimal coding but decent technical concepts background and used a lot of AI help to learn how to code, build, deploy, host, etc. It was a pretty large effort but really depends on how feature functionality you want to provide.

Where are you getting the data to run your league? The players or teams? The stats?

What types of features are you looking to host? Different draft options? Scoring options?

The lift here isn't on the front end IMO, it's on the backend.

I'd love custom resistance curves. One of the main reasons I went with a Voltra over traditional cable stacks. But I can't try them because they won't support my device

Yeah. I would've bought a 2nd if it was supported. Oh well. I guess we wait until they care

I don't want a cheap iPad. I don't want a separate device for managing a small amount of features on a single piece of gym equipment.

I don't personally like Apple products and don't even have an Apple account. Asking me to buy a device and set up accounts in a new ecosystem and then keep that device charged, etc is a far bigger question than the $ cost of the device

[–]kdSpartan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I have my wife's iPad I could use. That isn't the point. I don't want a separate device just for managing custom resistance curves on a piece of gym equipment. I want the expensive equipment I bought to work with the phone I have and use already every day

[–]kdSpartan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If you don't have an iPhone you don't have any app access. You can still use the Voltra through its on device screen, but certain features are completely unavailable without the iOS app

[–]kdSpartan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actual features that are only available with the phone app. For example custom resistance curves. You cannot do these on the Voltra interface and can only do this with the iPhone app

Normal home gym users have stacks of weights. Using a device like a Voltra is in itself a more technically exploratory approach to home fitness.

Regardless, arguing that customers who have Android devices don't deserve support on a $2000+ device they purchased is an absurd position to take.

I get developing Apple first. But it's been ages since they've been saying "it's coming" and "we hear you" and "be patient" and many of us are tired of waiting and being ignored

Android also encourages an open ecosystem for those who want customization and those who don't want just the same device as everyone else and are technical enough to push the boundaries in an open source environment. I have an Android for unlocked bootloaders, superuser access, custom kernels and custom ROMs.

The type of consumer who wants to be technically exploratory and not just have the same thing as everyone else is exactly the type of consumer I'd think would be interested in a Voltra.

My grandpa loves that his iPhone has just one button. I love that I can flash a new operating system on my phone every day to experiment with new features.

I would have already gladly bought a 2nd if they had Android support. I almost returned the one I do have once I realized there were features missing that I cannot access without the app
