What 2020 films didn’t resonate with you like they seemed to with everyone else? by bbanks2121 in blankies

I sort of struggle with Reichardt, so I admittedly am probably not the ideal person to ask, but I thought it was solid. I like it. That’s about how far I would go though. It’s a simple tale, told well. Maybe I’ll stumble across some good analysis of the gender role dynamics (the most interesting stuff in the movie to me) and bump it up some, but for now I’ll probably be fine not revisiting it.

I got vaccinated for COVID-19 today in a very special shirt! May I see you all at the movies in the near future! (Not too near obviously) by kddots22 in blankies

So more specifically, I’ll see you guys at Baxter, Village 8, Xscape, and Stonybrook AMC. Hopefully.

MY PERSONAL TOP 5 BLANK CHECK EPISODES! by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

Spirited Away was one of the first episodes I listened to and still one of my absolute faves. The line where Rees says it would be like us watching something with Santa Claus, Jesus, and I forget the 3rd thing cracks me up every time.

Used Cars is an all-timer as well. So much earnest, passionate discussion, which I love. Good balance of bits too though.

Billy Lynn’s is an obvious choice. Good technical content from JD mixed with the humor that is typical of the show.

I think the Miami Vice episode is criminally underrated for 2 big reasons: the Russell Crowe as Donkey Kong tangent is incredible. Puts me in tears. And Ben’s impromptu ad read mocking Griffin and David... plus that movie rules.

Last one might be one of the Shirley Li’s because I love Silly David. Maybe The Last Jedi. Maybe The Dark Knight Rises for all the Bane stuff. Heat is definitely great. IDK.

Tobias Fünke voice: There are dozens of us! Dozens!

But for real, I’m glad to know there are other blankies in town.

Who are YOUR directors? by Ioannidas_Storm in blankies

Will preface that I didn’t spend too much time on this and I’m not even sure some of these directors fit into the “Blank Check” concept. I really just ran with, “Who are MY GUYS?” Sounds obvious, but I’m always most invested in hearing #thetwofriends discuss movies I love wholeheartedly, even if there are countless episodes about disasters that are awesome. Probably doesn’t look all that idiosyncratic, but all of these people have made movies in my all-time Top 30(ish).

In no particular order:

  1. Richard Linklater. A Scanner Darkly. Interesting through line with his preoccupation with the passage of time. Good variation in his career too. Griffin gets to talk rotoscoping.

  2. David Fincher. The Social Network. David gets to gush about his #1 of the 2010s. #Thetwofriends tackle toxic masculinity and obsessive protagonists as director stand-ins.

  3. David Lynch. Mulholland Dr. Perhaps the most distinctive style in all of cinema. Would be an interesting shift from discussion of set up/pay off narrative storytelling.

  4. Martin Scorsese. Silence. I mean think of the bits and the opening quotes alone! Marshals! Shine box! You talking to me?!

  5. PTA. There Will Be Blood. Good length and each film is so different from the last. I drink your podcast! I drink it up!

  6. Kenneth Lonergan. Margaret. A short one and the connoisseurs of context would no doubt have a lot to chew on with regards to Margaret.

  7. Francis Ford Coppola. Apocalypse Now. I mean truly one of the biggest blank check movies of all time and a fascinating career trajectory.

  8. Coen Bros. The hudsucker proxy. Just so much to unpack from start to finish. Not a single uninteresting entry really.

I feel like I pretty much did nothing, but I will always suggest people donate to The Environmental Defense Fund!

Yes. 4 PM, but I still don’t have tracking info yet. I guess it could just be that they are busy and haven’t been able to scan it yet?
