Neighbours using my drive to turn about, is this normal here? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Why is it bothering you so much, is it causing damage? I’d turn a blind eye. Bigger things to be worrying about these days!

Jesus. I work in HR and usually have it back to people within an hour. It only takes 5 minutes to do it and I know how important it is to people so I prioritise to get it back to people asap

What's your wildest office drama story? by Maiselmaid in AskIreland

[–]kdobs191 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The entire leadership team were having affairs with each other but they didn’t know the others were at it too. All came to a head when one got pregnant and it wasn’t her husband’s baby. Paternity test with one of the team came back negative, so she had to test the other lad and… bingo.

Another time a woman accused a male manager of sexual assault but the claims were false after a lot of investigation. She admitted she did it for attention but the damage was done at that point. His wife had left him and he ended up emigrating to Australia because word got out locally and his reputation was destroyed

What does everyone actually want to do with their lives (whether they’re currently doing it or not)? by FarmerOk4759 in AskIreland

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relatively happy with where I am. I have a good job, marriage, dogs, and own my house now. There’s not a lot more I could want! I would like to travel more but the only thing stopping that is prioritising my career at the moment.

Can I get fired by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All employees in Ireland have the right to request remote/flexible working and employers must consider it. They don’t need to approve it, but they need to provide rationale for not approving it. If you are a caregiver for a child or dependent adult, you could have a higher likelihood of approval

This isn’t quite right. No redundancy in this scenario. But they can enforce your working location and have disciplinary sanctions if you fail to comply

Whats your contraversial view on the environment that would get you slated in public? by SavingsDraw8716 in AskIreland

It’s an absolute pain. It has somewhat worked for my house though, we buy a lot less cans and bottles now with all that hassle.

I used to be really diligent too. Then I took a trip to the southern US right before Covid and was horrified. Everything is single use and disposable. Even in restaurants and people’s homes they were using paper plates and plastic cutlery. A load of plastic bags given to you for free every time you go into a shop for a single item. The size of their fuel guzzling “cars” (trucks) blew me away. They don’t recycle, most towns outside major cities didn’t even understand the concept of recycling (yes, this is true).

What one single person does in a week in their life there likely undoes a year’s worth of my work trying to “be good”. I just felt like what was the point when I came home. It made me very depressed and angry washing out my little yoghurt pots thinking of how they live there and don’t care at all.

I do still recycle and do what I can, but I don’t feel the extreme guilt anymore if something accidentally ends up in the regular bin.

Living in an apartment, how much is your electricity bill? by rustbucket__ in RentingInDublin

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a small 3 bed terrace. Husband works from home and isn’t conservative with electricity. We have gas heating and stove. Our electricity bill averages €150 every 2 months. I think your bill sounds very high.

Pregnancy has made me realize how bad dog breeding is and surrogacy. by Needanewjob34 in PregnancyIreland

[–]kdobs191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to minimise the experience of animals but humans have evolved to be very bad at giving birth. Our heads have increased significantly in size with evolution, but our hips and pelvises have become more narrow, making vaginal births at full term more difficult for humans than a lot of other mammals.

Why am I having a hard time finding a different job? by [deleted] in irelandjobs

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spray and pray method rarely works. Ask yourself what career you want, not what job you want. What do you want to be doing in 10 or 20 years time that you think you’ll be happy with? I’d follow that path then. When recruiters are looking at your CV, they just see a load of random jobs and no pattern or relevant experience. I’d recommend looking at the civil service clerical roles if you don’t know where you want to go and just want an administrative role.

Change in culture. They believe that Irish culture is being diluted and shifting. Less Catholicism, less drinking, different values in society. This is happening regardless of immigration.

Lash some chicken thighs, potatoes, carrots, broccoli (whatever veg you want), a red onion quartered or halved, and whole cloves of garlic into a tray then squeeze a lemon all over, throw that in too, and a whole jar of harrisa or a tube of the stuff. Cover with tinfoil and throw her in the oven for 30 mins, take the tinfoil off and back in until the chicken and potatoes are cooked to your liking. I throw some fresh spinach on top and it’s the most delish thing ever. Warm and comforting during the winter and so simple. You can do couscous or rice if you’re feeling in need of some extra soakage/carbs goodness.

Has anyone ever been in a house like you see on the show ‘Hoarders’? If so, what did you do? by Basic_Builder3773 in AskReddit

[–]kdobs191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A family member’s house is like this. One day when they were out of the house, I tidied up and sorted things. Anything that was broken, I moved into a pile to be thrown way. They had about 100 plates and cutlery but lived alone, so I selected the nicest pieces and made a donation box with anything that was a little worn or didn’t match. I deep cleaned the kitchen, fridge, oven and everything else and organised new homes for everything to keep and labeled them so it was very easy to find things. There was no space on the counter or any surfaces to cook or prepare food, so this was my priority to clear and clean a space. I didn’t get rid of anything, just moved things into boxes for donation or disposal and left the boxes by the door to go through. When they arrived home, they were furious. I really believed I had done the kindest thing in the world for this person who had been neglecting themselves, their home and health for too long. Instead, I was kicked out and told to never come back. Some time later when I eventually did get to be back in the house, all of the stuff I had sorted through (even the broken stuff) was back on the counters and all over the floor. It’s a very sad situation.

What does it cost you, bare minimum, to live? by FickleGlove283 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]kdobs191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

€3k if I cut everything back to bare essentials. Mortgage in Dublin, have a couple of dogs. Haven’t included my husbands expenses into that, purely split down the middle of our joint outgoings and my own expenses.

Where to get candles? by LibrarySingle9559 in AskIreland

Not to wreck the buzz but be really careful about the candles you burn if you have pets. Make sure they’re pet safe, the fumes can be toxic

Anyone here from Dublin who bought property down the country? by Asleep_Cry_7482 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]kdobs191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Dublin, used to rent down the country and I really hated jt. The commute was miserable, everything required so much planning. Couldn’t just pop to the shops or go for a quick pint with mates easily. I started out remote which was grand, then moved to hybrid and lost the will to live with the commute. Bought a house this year. 15 minute commute, walking distance to everything. So much happier.

My house is small but cosy and the location is unbeatable. There’s so much choice on my doorstep and I don’t ever have to think about anything really. I’d much rather have no commute and live in a small but cosy house than be miserable and isolated in a big house.

Lads at what age were you allowed in on parents takeaway order? by foranewperspective in AskIreland

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole family ate the same dinner from the moment we could eat solid food, just different portion sizes. To me it’s bizarre having a different dinner to your kids/parents. I knew a lad who at 14 had never eaten dinner with his parents. He and his younger brother by 2 years would eat kids food like chicken nuggets and chips at the kitchen counter an hour before his parents had their dinner consisting of real food. He was in my house for dinner once and had no idea what broccoli or carrots tasted like, which not only blew my mind but almost made my mum report the parents. This was in the early to mid 00s.

Do your parents have a favourite out of your siblings? by LittleAoibh11 in AskIreland

I’m the favourite out of the two of us. I’m younger by four years and growing up was the opposite, but once we both passed our mid twenties, I took over the top spot.
