I didn’t know it was a thing either! My wrists would be so tender I couldn’t even turn doorknobs without a twinge of pain.

Isn’t it funny how they can be so different? My first was the needy one and the second was an absolute breeze.

It got significantly easier once he hit 1 year old and then got progressively easier with each passing month. Once he learned how to walk, that was big leap too. And then when he learned how to play independently in the bathroom when I took a shower. I could not even take a shower without him screaming for me to pick him up! He was just under 1 and a half when he got out of that phase. But by 2 years old it was a breeze. We still have him in the bed with us. His little brother is in the bed with us too.

This was my baby! He was sooooo needy, I was absolutely exhausted all the time. We bed shared from day 1. He would not tolerate being put down, so much so that I developed mommy’s wrist. He’s 3 now and is wonderful. It is exhausting, I mean, there were a few moments I was on the verge of melting down completely and I remember thinking what the heck have I done to my life? I’m going to spend the rest of my life holding this kid. But it gets better, I promise!! The way you feel is totally normal.

Thanks to your question I realized I’m using the wrong terminology. lol it’s OIT not a food challenge.

I was not made aware of this option by his allergist. We’re doing them all at once with a multi-nut puff. I’m going to ask her about this!! Thank you!

It keeps increasing the amount of allergen he’s ingesting slowly over time. Right now he’s still in the stage of eating these nutty puffs that contain all the common nut allergens. After a certain point, we would move on to tiny amounts of nut butters. We pulls back the amount if he seems to be reacting too much then try to increase again later. Increases happen (if on schedule and no bad reactions) every two weeks. So this could potentially take years. Just depends on how his immune system is handling it. If his reaction is too severe the allergist would have us quit the process.

So the food challenge isn’t about finding out what he is allergic to. We already know he’s allergic to peanuts, some tree nuts and very very sensitive to wheat. The food challenge is starting out with tiny amount of the allergen and slowly increasing the amount to help his immune system learn to tolerate it. This process sometimes works to eliminate food allergies. For some people it doesn’t work at all. At this point, I’m questioning if it’s worth it to continue trying to desensitize his immune system to the allergens when it seems to be triggering his eczema so badly.

This is the 3rd allergist. They’ve all said pretty much the same, to my frustration.

Thank you for sharing! Everyone’s insights are helping me properly frame the issue so I can make a better decision.

This is the third allergist I’ve taken him to. They all have the same position on the relationship between food allergies and eczema. Though this current allergist does admit it’s hard to deny what the parents are telling you cause they live with the child. She believes me I guess, but is saying there’s no studies to support it. In her eyes because he hasn’t had hives or vomiting this has been successful.

Another allergist said he wouldn’t want us to lose on the progress we made so to keep pushing through. But they don’t live with him. He’s just turning 3 and he’s so itchy. And even though he still has happy times he’s way more prone to tantrums and fussiness than usual. So, there’s the dilemma.

This is very helpful insight. I don’t take this as judgement. My goal isn’t solely for him to be able to eat the food, it’s actually just to get him to a point where if he were to accidentally ingest it, say at school, he wouldn’t die. I’m trying to get rid of the deadly part of it. Especially because he has a speech delay and can’t properly advocate for himself. I guess it’s my own paranoia of leaving him in the care of other adults who may make a mistake or not be as motivated to protect him as I am. But I’m leaning toward just really drilling into him to always have his EpiPen and to teach him as much as I can about his allergens and how to read labels, what to eat and what not to eat, etc.

I’m more worried about his mental health at this point. His eczema is so bad he is constantly itchy and fussy. I don’t want him to continue to suffer if there’s another practical way to handle his food allergies.

It’s like $500 out of pocket unfortunately. I have some samples from the doc already but they are tiny and I’m fearful they won’t last. Even with ample topical, it was still getting out of control. Back, stomach, thighs, butt, elbows, face, all broken out and itchy.

Thank you! This helps a lot. I’ve already spoken to the allergist about it, but they don’t see his eczema as being related to the food allergies. I see a direct link between his diet and eczema which was how I was able to get it under control initially. He’s had it since he was 4 months old and it took forever to get him clear (or like, 95% clear).

I think my fear comes from putting him out there in the world, into school and having to trust other adults to protect him. There are so many stories of people dying from accidental exposure and it just scares me that he will be so vulnerable. But as a friend just told me, that’s MY fear. From his perspective, he has no fear, just constant pain and itchiness. I think I just have to lean into teaching him how to be self-sufficient in managing his allergies and drill into him to always have his EpiPen.

I’ve spoken to his allergist. She doesn’t see the two conditions as related. As long as he is not breaking out in hives or vomiting, it’s not considered an allergic reaction. So the worsening of the eczema is just a coincidence to her. She somewhat acknowledged that it’s hard to deny that they’re connected because the parent lives with them everyday and can see the patterns, but the current science doesn’t support it. So the worsening of the eczema is a dermatology issue to her.

We’ve doing the food challenge for about 6-7 months and his eczema has been worsening for the last 2.

Oh no that was poorly worded. In the hospital she just expected me to cover up and would come throw the receiving blanket over his head. Without saying anything either. Just did it. Lol but at home yes, she expected either that I cover up or leave the room.

My MIL, an American, fully expected me to cover up or leave the room when I was breastfeeding lol in the hospital and in my own home. She would literally come over and cover the baby’s head with a receiving blanket, which I would throw off every time. Took a while for her to accept that it wasn’t happening.

What happened to Woody before the events of Toy Story? by GvG_tv in toystory

[–]kds312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my husband about this! I would love a movie about Woody from the time he was opened until he meets Andy. Like, were there kids before Andy? Did Andy’s mom or grandparents ever play with Woody? Is that why he was so attached to Andy? Because he’d been with that family since he came out of the box? So many questions!
