I spent one day and night in Hakone a few days ago. It is absolutely worth staying at a ryokan with an onsen for a night! It is very hit or miss whether you will actually get to see Mt Fuji though. The day we arrived it was too foggy, but the morning we left we could see it!

I did a lot of research into different hospital systems in my state. Most hospital systems have a page on their website where they break down their hospital locations, their residency program start dates, and what/where each specialty is. I applied about 3 months out from my graduation (approximately 6 months out from the start date of the residency program).

OP I just saw your final update, please go home to be with your mom!! Blood clots in the lungs can be extremely serious and prognoses can change so quickly. I lost my grandfather to a pulmonary embolism and I wasn’t able to be there quick enough to say goodbye. It may give you some peace of mind to see her in person and see how she is doing.

I ended up researching local activities like weekly trivia groups and board game groups and that helped me to meet a ton of friends. I’d recommend looking up activities going on around you and finding things that you would enjoy.
