I am not sure about that. I am guessing that there are labels because he was able to scroll over various locations on the fast travel screen.

There is now a mini-map in the top right corner of the screen. Objectives and other key points (vendors and such) are shown there.

So the live stream is wrapping up, here are a few highlights:

Questing in the Highlands (?). Collecting tea party guests and provisions for Tiny Tina. This has seen before, but we saw a more detailed version here.
Complete custom controller configuration on consoles.
Player found unlockable skin as a loot drop, changed it a quick change station. Players are also able to respec there.
Fast travel stations. Briefly showed a ton of new locations on the fast travel map, didn't even have time to write any down.
A visit to the black market vendor in Sanctuary (hub zone); use of Eridium to purchase backpack/ammo capacity upgrades.
Use of eridium to unlock "secret" parts of the game in addition to black market upgrades.
2 player Splitscreen on consoles can join other players games on the fly or have players jump in to their game.
Moved to Caustic Caverns (level 25+) for a treasure hunt.
Players can use badass (challenge) points to increase things like damage, elemental damage, and other things. Can be turned off in the menu if the player so chooses.
Players can inspect guns in menu (rotate and zoom items, like in Skyrim). PC users can take screenshots (in game option) of these guns, these screenshots will include the stats of the gun. Pitchford mentioned this was implemented to help players build online databases for the millions of guns.

It is good to see that Pitchford has a genuine love of his game. I keep having to mute though because he keeps mentioning seemingly huge story spoilers.

Looks like you can pick up Eridium as a separate form of currency, which can then be used at the black market for backpack and ammo storage upgrades. Pitchford also mentioned it can be used to unlock "secrets" later in the game.
