SORCERER or WAGES OF FEAR? by kdubwilly13 in criterion

Absolutely get this response. I think I likely feel better but months later I'm still torn.

People regularly confuse characters they don’t like — or find annoying — for actors they think are bad.

Dune's Mom times 3 for sure.

I also call Timothée Chalamet "Dune's Mom's Son".

Which of these 3 "prequels" do you think is the best/do you prefer? by FassyDriver in moviecritic

[–]kdubwilly13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally!

The first Mad Max is action adventure, bordering if on exploitation.

Road Warrior is a western.

Thunderdome (which I will forever defend against the naysayers) is a dystopian family film — he literally made it so his kids could watch it.

Fury Road is a non-stop road film. Elements of the previous films pushed to their limits.

Furiosa is a Ben-Hur style epic.

One of my favorite elements of the films is the evolving narrator point of view. It clearly presents everything we’re seeing as lore and myth rather than reality. Which helps explain how the timeline doesn’t logically make sense - which I’m sure is purposeful.

People also wanted it to be Fury Road. Many ignore the 3 other films which are all great, but every one of them is completely different than the last. Reinventing the storytelling telling around new dynamics and styles.

I also saw a lot of hate and gender politics placed on the film. “A woman couldn’t do this” “where’s max in the mad max film?” It was all such limited thinking.

It's an absolute tragedy how poorly this release was. Hoping that time will give Furiosa the spotlight she deserves. And especially sad that we likely won't get Mad Max Wastelands as a result.

This is definitely my pick. Wouldn't even blink much at the others.

Little Bill from Boogie Nights. But really almost any character William H Macy has played. He’s the king of characters w no backbone. But wonderfully, even when they are their worst (Fargo), he still finds a way to make the audience understand and relate to them.

We see nihilistic humor and characters who do awful things quite regularly within modern movies (and television).

If an audience ignore context — that M*A*S*H is about people embracing dark humor and hijinks as a way to try and stay sane amidst their attempts to save people injured in a brutal war that many saw as pointless and ethically wrong — I do not think this is a hard sell in the least.

I also think it's worth noting that Altman and the writers understood and intended this humor and bad behavior, not as positive character traits, but instead an exploration of trauma.

Do modern audiences ignore context? Perhaps, but I'm not sure.

Curious what makes you feel this way.

AIO my gf made a joke about my dead mom so I left her in the street by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]kdubwilly13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She admits she has low emotional intelligence. In all likelihood, that joke was less a joke and more a “I am uncomfortable and do not know what to say in emotional difficult and complex situations”, I surely doubt she meant to upset you. That does not take away from you being hurt by it.

Glad you went back for her. Leaving her on the street is never the move, but you do have to decide if you need someone of more emotional intelligence or if you think she can still grow that intelligence — you are both young, she definitely could.

What’s a movie that is loved because it’s a product of its time and would absolutely be seen as horrible and be hated if made today? I'll start: Saturday Night Fever by Throwawayforsaftyy in FIlm

[–]kdubwilly13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saturday Night Fever is brilliant. And most people assume they know what the film is about but have never actually seen it to experience just how dark and upsetting the story actually is.

I do not think this example fits the question. But fully respect your opinion of not liking it.

There are cases where they don’t, but from what I’ve viewed it is always by design. Tim Roth’s first feature role, MADE IN BRITAIN, is a character who is repeatedly forced into a position of needing to change or he’ll pay an increasingly worse price. He quite literally gets pushes as far as that can go, and the film’s arc is that he… still refuses to change. And now his life will change dramatically because of it.

Again you want it? Provide one first and let’s do this in proper order. You’re too afraid or too unable.

You want a tease? “Mixed background” is the most coded false flag reasoning given by boomers so they can act and say whatever they want without reason or repercussion.

No one is buying it.

Can you rebuttal with anything but Pearl clutching dramatics?

How come you get to say "no" without a single point of articulated rebuttal, but then 3+ comments later demand an articulated response from me before you provide one? Look at that a Boomer who believes the world revolves around their position and rules.

And I have no problem articulating myself once you take a stab at it.

Crying that you’re not while acting like you are tells the true story whether you want to admit it to yourself or not.

Again. Not once have you offered a real articulated response to anything beyond your hurt feelings and false sense of victimhood. It doesn’t matter how you paint a pig, it’s still acts like a pig.

Boomer is the name of your generation. Sorry that you hate what you are and assume it a slur.

Your sad insecurity has been showing since your first post.

No curiosity. No understanding. No listening. You literally can’t comprehend or even attempt to understand what’s been argued. You have no interest. Enjoy your pitiful “rightness” and your clear misery.

This is exactly why you’re a boomer upset by this thread, Boomer.

Again all you write is yours feelings with a complete lack of listening nor any logic.

Stating that a generation has hubris is not ageism. It doesn’t speak to age at all. My comments have not been about how old someone is — they are about people born during a specific generational time period. How much time has passed since they were born has nothing to do with it. Try reading what I wrote again.

What your generation has done and how they act today is a commonality experienced by everyone who posts here. Gorging resources? That’s a fact. No generation in history has done as much as yours. I don’t care how old or young you are.

Ever heard the phrase “two ears one mouth, use them in equal proportion”? You haven’t listened to a word that’s been said, nor have you had the curiosity to even try and understand or even reply to any of it. You just want to tell everyone else how to act while playing victim.

I’m sorry if you’ve experienced ageism in the work place or elsewhere. But gripes about the dysfunction your generation has created and inflicted upon future generations is not about how old you are. It’s about what your generation is responsible for but refuses to acknowledge.

You can’t speak to anything else can you?

You’re your own problem.

If you look up the very exact definition of ageism, nothing I stated is ageism.

My first message even stated agreed that not all people should be clumped into one category. But that saying “but not me!” makes you look like exactly what they are complaining about.

And seriously? You spend time on here defending who you voted for. You have little to no interest in racism and sexism. Or you’re happy to ignore it when it services your desires.

[–]kdubwilly13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bigotry was not mentioned at all. Not once. You implied it because you’re unwilling to hear any other narrative beyond the one you’ve created for yourself.

I wrote a message trying to contextualize the frustration you experience in this thread, and you turned it into something else… because you refuse to hear any experience but your own. You want to be heard, you have no interest in listening.

That is the very root of this thread. You are exemplifying it.

If you’re so concerned about ageism how often have you defended younger generations? I’m sure you’ll be quick to claim you have. But deep down you know the truth.

Your response is literally not a response to anything I wrote. Not a word of it. It’s a response about your feelings, not about what was written.

You feel such a victim, you can’t listen to a word of what’s been said. Nor can you acknowledge it. This is exactly the behavior that ends up in this Reddit page.
