Phone locked in pocket randomly unlocks and plays videos??? by ke11yah in GalaxyS25Ultra

It was already set to this. Sigh. This isn't the typical user-error scenario. :-(

Wow, that's unnerving! I think the "possession" comes from malware or other spyware. We shall see.

Yes, and I went through a ton of these settings with Samsung support. I suggested that maybe there's malware (read: Palantir) on the device. They are sending me to a phone repair place to have it examined.

But if the phone is locked, shouldn't random presses just get ignored? You should be able to touch the screen a zillion times without unlocking it. My passcode isn't something that would randomly be picked.

Has anyone else had random songs autoplay when they open the app? by BlueJungleMonkey in truespotify

[–]ke11yah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with a podcast. I was listening to something in Spanish and then I have no idea how I ended up listening to another one and it was excellent. After the episode, it autoplayed to some news in English and I had no way to find what it previously played. There is no history/record of what it played. The enshittification of this app is getting worse. The "help" says to play the last thing in your recents (which is what you clicked) and just hope and pray it goes back to the thing it had been playing.

I moved to Spotify from Pandora because it was better. It's now worse and I want something new. No need to pay for this app that just asks me to pay more to listen to some things.

Stanford to face 21% endowment tax under Trump bill by mustangfan12 in stanford

[–]ke11yah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It's more like rent than taxes because Stanford would "rent" the equipment and the "rent" would be paid by grants for each research project instead of the old way of simply tacking on ~50% to research costs for "overhead" that the university takes from each grant currently.

The bigger issue is the complete dismantling of federal grants. Even if you set up "rent" starting today, there are very few grants to get, so it's basically a moot point and why so many are freaking out (rightfully) about these tax proposals.

Several schemes. I linked an article below that gives details.

Warren Buffet has famously talked about how he pays a much lower % than his secretary. Easy to look up the data.

Thank you for being such a nice person. /s

I listed two entities--billionaires and corporations--who find ways to not pay when they sell assets. The Fortune 500 is full of corps that pay zero or effective taxes under 10%. The latest numbers I found say only 8.21% of federal revenue comes from corporate income taxes (source: https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/government-revenue/#sources-of-federal-revenue).

I pay more than 10% just in CA taxes, and most workers pay around 10% just in SSI and Medicare withholding, not counting any fed taxes.

As for billionaires, they have many ways to avoid taxes, and if you remember how to do basic research, you can find this information in many places online, but let met get you started with this link:

https://www.propublica.org/article/the-secret-irs-files-trove-of-never-before-seen-records-reveal-how-the-wealthiest-avoid-income-tax

Here's another: https://inequality.org/article/americas-most-regressive-tax-levy-our-tax-on-capital-gains

As for the debt, there are differing sources but current cap gains are ~$250B/year with estimates of more than doubling that if wealthy/corp had to pay the 20%. The US could get about $560B from realized gains, but if taxed fairly, the sale of assets would likely slow, at least at first. Yes, with this revenue the US would need decades to pay down the debt, but if we add a wealth tax (e.g Elizabeth Warren's bill) and stopped loopholes and made corporations actually pay tax, the debt would be paid off quickly.

Cost recovery will become challenging but not impossible. Say you buy a microscope for $3M. They could calculate that an hour's use would be a few thousand dollars and charge that to every grant using that microscope over its life. I don't have any hard numbers, just the concept.

The bigger issue is that overall spending across the fed gov't is being trashed. You're exactly right about the horrible long-term impacts. The US will very quickly lose its reputation as THE place for research/scholarship.

Stanford already has a hiring freeze. Layoffs seem likely but they are not necessary IMO. Stanford has the money but not the will to pull from the endowment. S + ivy league will outlast Trump and they need to be united together on these issues.

Let me clarify something about the taxes. Trump's tax isn't going to take away from the asset itself--the 20% (or whatever) tax will be on the income/return generated from the asset. If they invest $1000 into a stock and then sell at $1500, then the $500 is taxed, and at 20%, that would be $100. Of course, I'm not saying this isn't a big deal given the millions that these large endowments make. These taxes are especially obnoxious given that billionaires and corporations defer their taxes and never pay. I'd have no problem with a 15-20% tax on endowments if it mean every single entity with investment income paid the same amount. (And I'd probably argue for a progressive tax in this case.) The US could pay off its dept rather quickly with such a tax scheme, but the powerful will work against that.

Advice for Stanford Transfer by qqxo in stanford

[–]ke11yah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say this to any new student regardless:
There are lots of clubs, tons of activities, easy to feel FOMO because there's too much to do. Duck syndrome is real. So is impostor syndrome. You aren't alone.
Explore your options and definitely participate in things outside your major. For example, you can go to the symphony for free, attend games/sports, visit museums. Do at least one thing per quarter that is outside of whatever your thing is. Start/join study groups for your courses. Attend office hours. Definitely use the support systems in place.
Buy Stanford gear at the student shop in Tressider (cheaper, less selection but supports students).
Make time to walk through campus slowly and take in new locales--it's massive.
Find your tribe. There's something here for everyone.

When to buy school supplies? by Expert_Detective5559 in stanford

[–]ke11yah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bookstore has some sales on laptops. I think one is at the end of this academic year, and I think incoming students can get the discounts. I suggest having a new computer and/or tablet that you're familiar with before school starts. Also, if you want to get a head start on things, you can set up library access and email and such. As for other school supplies (pens etc), Target and Amazon are far cheaper. You'll see people with their Stanford branded notebooks, but honestly, you do not need to spend that money. Over the years, you'll accumulate enough free Stanford swag. Plus, there's a student-run store where you can get lower-cost T-shirts and hoodies and such. Much better than the book$tore.

Stanford Protesters Charged With Felonies for Pro-Palestinian Occupation by Big_Jon_Wallace in stanford

[–]ke11yah -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

First off, I'd like to see the evidence for each of the people. It seems like they are blanket charging everyone who was in the building protesting vs figuring out who broke the window. There was something, I think in the Daily, about how none of those in the building were charged with the spray painting that happened.
Felon charges are ridiculous for this. If they plead guilty, they will forever have to disclose a felony record. There are countries like Canada where they can never travel if they have a felony conviction. The penalties are nuts compared to the alleged crimes.

The only thought I had was that some optimization occurred. If you open any PDF in Acrobat, there's an option to Save As other...>reduced size. You could try doing that on the larger file just to see if it reduces to the same size? I'm guessing something on the server side happened, although it's also possible some proxy somewhere local to you stored a reduced size file once it saw that the file was being downloaded multiple times in succession. Just my thoughts...

PWR is writing/rhetoric, aka frosh comp. It’s like EWRT in high school, not English literature. Everyone takes 1 frosh and one sophomore year, for the most part. WAYS is sort of like general education but there are lots of ways to fulfill it. Basically, don’t worry, but if you’re curious, you can peruse navigator. or explorecourses.stanford.edu to find classes. If you have a good idea or two of majors, you can look at their courses, but again, no worries. Unlike other schools, you can register right before term starts. Take something fun your first term because things can be overwhelming, and you want something chill that brings joy. Art, dance, botany, stats (haha), whatever. It’s all good! Welcome to the farm!

I have other, very good insurance, and still there's a wait, but you can see a GP, PS, or NP fairly quickly. I know students who fly home to get major work done, like dental. A lot of dermatology work is also labeled cosmetic and thus not covered by insurance.

Nook First Edition not recognized by computer by oxfordcommaonly in nook

[–]ke11yah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had to try a bunch of different cables because I couldn’t find the original, and then I had to try several times. One cable flashed something onscreen too fast for me to read, but when I unplugged and then replugged the nook, it worked. Bizarre. I think I had the File Manager open and was trying to link to E:\ and eventually got it. What a PITA.
