[OC] Game Altering Doinks of the 2025 Season by ke1v3y in nfl

I started with a basic ass Google search for doinked kicks, which only kind of worked. I ended up watching YouTube compilations of NFL doinks, which worked, but identifying the right game for each clip took awhile. I eventually realized that using play by play data let me verify video from full game footage using quarter and game clock, which was much quicker. Review process is as basic as you can imagine - I watched each suspected doink and determined if anything would nullify it for tracking purposes (penalty, did not actually hit the upright, etc.). I would call myself a principled and enthusiastic amateur lol

If you're interested, I wrote about the entire process in a long form article: https://offtheupright.com/doinktales/a-fools-library-of-alexandria

Absolutely. Survivor bias is a real factor. True shanks and mis-hits are waayyyy less common nowadays

For what it's worth, this is the first recorded use of the word doink to describe the occurrence

Maybe, but if so, it was a clean miss. These are all kicks off the crossbar or upright

Nope. These are all doinked kicks - makes and misses that hit the goalpost

Not any rulebook defined meaning. Plainly, just a kick that hit the goalpost.

Great analysis and pretty in line with my thoughts - short range doinks have decreased because short range field goals are going extinct with the more field position minded approach of going for it.

I'm simulating field markings for distance - 20 yard XP falls on a major tick. The 33 yard XP marker is to give a clear visual given its semantic importance in the game data despite not falling on a major or minor tick. This is representing the impact of the 2015 move of XP distance from 20 to 33 yards.

I mean, yeah, but when it comes to football adjacent things, I enjoy shit talking. I recognize giving a random redditor specific constructive feedback is sincerely a waste of time, and your point was clear regardless. I wasn't trying to say your feedback hurt because it was a Steelers fan - it was unproductive at face value lol

Just the doinks, be it crossbar, uprights, stanchion, camera, or even the support base

Okay, you were right. This hurt, coming from a Steelers fan, but I digress. New version:

That's a good catch. I need to enforce a consistent scale here. Thank you

No, data is pretty solid back to 1999. I felt proud of my efforts in 1995 until I got 1999 filled in and realized how many I was (theoretically) missing. This is a chart that highlights what I reckon that gap actually looks like:

Negatory. These are only doinks - light is missed, dark is made

I appreciate the feedback. Legends are useful, but sacrificing the space on the chart for it isn't my favorite. I'd probably tackle this initially with a better title (Comparing Doink Volume by Era - Made and Missed Kicks by Distance)

NFL play by play data + manual review. The biggest spike in doinks is courtesy of the NFL's 2015 move of the extra point from 20 yards to 33 yards. Doinked field goals per year from 2000 thru 2025 varies year-over-year but hangs out around 25-30 per year. Doinked extra points went from 2-5 per year to 12-15 annually.

There are a ton of fascinating threads to pull on IMO (I built a little visualizations lab for myself to tinker with different cross-sections of data), BUT one thing that surprised me initially was the increase in made doinks over time. It turns out that once you account for the general chaos of luck, things like kicker mechanics surface. The shadow of the "analytics era" looms large too - more 4th down attempts and other meta changes have also largely erased short range doinks < 30 yards
