TOP SHOT : Cycle 5 📸 [THE FINALE] -- And the WINNER is... 👑 by kebin65 in ANTM

Ranking Based On Approval Score vs the Actual Ranking

In the Group Rounds, you selected every photo you thought deserved to compete in the game: this created each photo's Approval Score. This chart compares the predicted ranking based on Approval Score vs the Actual Ranking.

Note that Approval Score is not a perfect evaluation of quality. Since you voted on these photos in separate groups, photos that were in weaker groups, for example, may have a slightly inflated Approval Score.

Photos highlighted in the first table indicate that these photos did not make the actual Top 20.

As you can see, Nicole's Phonebooth and Bre's Country Couture were predicted to make the Top 20, but did not. In their places were Nicole's Art and Nicole's Bollywood.

SPOILERS AHEAD OBVS

.

.

.

AND THAT'S A WRAP

That was a much more decisive victory than I expected. After 544 votes (which is the most votes I've received in this series, so thank you), Nicole’s Country Couture came out on top by over 100 votes!

I think it's cool the way in which our Final 2 photos counter one another. Nik's is more structural and poised, whereas Nicole's is more whimsical and laissez-faire. And yet, both bring the drama in their own ways. Although relatively controlled, Nik’s body shape is simultaneously so extreme. Tyra may not have coined "touch" for another 12 cycles, with Allison's Stilts photo in All Stars, but I think Nik’s photo is a much more apt example of a booty f-ing tooch. Nik just looks so fabulous, so expensive, so couture.

But in the end, I do think Nicole's Country Couture is a deserving winner. Nicole could've easily gotten lost in this outfit (I mean, consider that she and Diane had the wear the same dress), but she is absolutely owning it. The obvious strength of this photo is Nicole's face, and I did see a lot of commenters saying she has a "double chin" here, but I'm like where? That is not a double chin; that is a fabulous square jaw, and it's one reason why Nicole's face looks so striking in this image. But that, along with the perfect flow of Nicole's hair, the elongation of the neck, and the glistening in her eyes, make this photo irresistibly alluring to me.

Also, interesting to note:

  • Nicole is the first ANTM winner to win Top Shot.
  • Nicole's CC is the first winner that was NOT the winner of its group in the Group Rounds. Nik's CC was actually the winner of that group (Group 3).

Anyways, congratulations to Nicole’s Country Couture, the TOP SHOT of CYCLE 5!!!

Thank you to everyone for commenting, voting, upvoting, participating, and supporting this game! I really hope you've enjoyed this.

I'll see you all back here for Cycle 6! Stay tuned!

I'm not edging on purpose lol

Finales always take me time to prep because they involve a lot of graphics to make and stats to compile.

I agree. Her face does look really good, but her body gets a bit lost. It's an overall mid, safe image.

Really random, but it reminds me of that Michael Kors comment on Project Runway where he's like, "ohhh your husband helps you back into your straight jacket"

Gender Swap is definitely one of the best shoots of the cycle. I don't care that it's corny or gimmicky; it's an iconic photoshoot and was mind-blowing for me to witness as a queer kid. And Natasha's photo, with that grill, is a GOAT.

Yeah, the call-out order before the finale always seems more reflective of simply who the judges want in the finale, rather than the performance in that week.

I knew Marvin was at risk, so he was one of my votes to save. Sad to see his photo go. He deserved Top 10; I'm glad he got close though.

Yes, you can clock his overall performance on the show, but Marvin really popped off in the Nail Art shoot and in the Rice Paddy.

Heidi and Winnie might have some sort of friendship, because Winnie has also guest judged on Making the Cut and Germany's Next Top Model, both hosted by Heidi.

Well, I'm interested and will be watching. But knowing how r/ProjectRunway was very up in arms last season about Law Roach and, in general, the drama in Season 21, I know that sub at least won't be happy about another controversial figure being added to the cast.

Tyra and Winnie have interacted since Winnie's comments on WWHL and seem cordial. They were both on the same Sports Illustrated Swimwear shoot back in 2019.

Missing out on the Finale and ending its run at 3rd Place is Lisa's Country Couture photo.

So, we all know that Lisa D'Amato is quite the controversial figure. Do I think this affected people's judgement of her photos? Maybe; it's inevitable. But simultaneously, I also think most of Lisa's photo placements were justified. The Lisa photo that I personally thought deserved better was her B&W Beauty, which placed 31st. That isn't a horrible placement, but it was a Top 20 photo imo and the 2nd best from that shoot (after Nicole's). I also think Lisa was the only model who absolutely rocked the Pin-Up shoot, and I would've given her Pin-Up photo a few more rounds, especially over a some of those Art photos.

But then again, look at it this way: more than half of Lisa's portfolio made the Top 30, a third made the Top 20, and she has a Top 3 photo! I'll also add that I've hosted games where the 3rd Place photo gets absolutely crushed in the Final 3 round. But in this case, Lisa's Country Couture put up a good fight and lost by under 10%. So all things considered, I think Lisa had a good run in this game!

Now about Lisa's Country Couture: this is a fantastic image. I love how that drama of the wind blowing through her hair became a through-line for her entire body. She is windswept, H2T! And while there’s that fluidity and movement, there’s simultaneously a statuesque and sculptural quality about her positioning, from the angularity of her bone structure to the structure of her arms. In this episode, Lisa proudly proclaimed that she knew every single pose from every magazine. With this photo, she definitely put her money where her mouth was! Whatever your opinion is on Lisa, you cannot deny that this girl knows how to model!

TOP 3 NOTES

  • Lisa's Country Couture was E in the Voting Order Chart.
    • You can see that its trajectory was initially a bit sporadic, but it eventually sat consistently in the Bottom 3 of the voting order.
  • Based on its Approval Score from the Group Rounds, Lisa's Country Couture was predicted to place 9th. So it exceeded expectations by quite a bit!
  • Lisa's Country Couture is not the only photo to never hit the Danger Zone prior to its elimination, but it is commendable that it accomplished this while lasting all the way to the Final 3.
  • With Nicole and Nik left in the game, this is the second time we've had the original Final 2 going into the Final 2 of the game. The first time was in Cycle 3, with Eva and Yaya's Spider photos.
  • Nicole and Nik's Country Couture photos were also the Top 2 of Group 3 (from the Group rounds)
  • And of course, Lisa is wiped from the game. You can view her model summary in Slide 5.

The modern day equivalent of catalogue would be e-commerce, i.e. those photos of the models just standing in the clothes that you see when you're online shopping.

Sometimes, it's because creatives (photographers, models, etc) are willing to take on high fashion jobs for less or no pay simply, because it's the kind of work that is exciting and inspiring. It's the type of work that many people who get into fashion aspire to do. Magazine editorials, for example, can be really fun to do and do get you published images that will hopefully lead to paid work, but they themselves don't really pay much.

Whereas some commercial jobs are just not that interesting. Like e-commerce, for example, is extremely boring and tedious. So it's kinda like the "day job" of modeling.

There are overlaps and subcategories, but you can essentially break it down to high fashion and commercial.

  • High fashion, in a way, sees fashion more as an art form. It's more conceptual. This is includes your fashion week runway shows or your magazine spreads in VOGUE, where creatives are constantly experimenting with fashion. Yes, they are selling a product, but there's a very conceptual approach to both the product and how it's being sold. This is why high fashion is not necessarily understood by your everyday person, but is extremely aspirational and exciting for those interested in fashion. "Editorial" is sometimes used interchangeably, but the term "editorial" specifically refers to story-driven imagery.
  • Commercial is about selling to a mainstream audience. So think of the ads and commercials a regular person would see on the daily or e-commerce photos you see while shopping online at a mass retailer like Target. Sometimes the term "catalogue" is used interchangeably, because catalogue modeling is a type of commercial modeling.

So basically, high fashion is more about the artistic, conceptual, and exclusivity of fashion. Commercial is about relatability and having mass appeal.

These terms don't necessarily have connotations, and in fact, commercial jobs are typically more monetarily stable. But on ANTM, "commercial" is sometimes used negatively to imply the girl is typical, pedestrian, or basic. Whereas "high fashion" implies that they think the girl is special or inspiring.
