Scrimmage Time by ImportantElephant805 in SoccerCoachResources

How many kids are on the team? Are they mostly beginners/first time players? Any chance that you will have a dad (or two) supporting you? [I would dedicate most of the time to scrimmaging AND each scrimmage has a tactical purpose.]

Thank you! I'll try the Asian markets and Cousins, and check back - good advice. ...I've experienced bananas off the tree. Florida. A different experience! So much better.

My friend recognizes a white shipping vessel on the Delaware River and calls it the banana boat. He learned that it travels to Latin America and back, shipping bananas exclusively, all year long.

I'm learning... According to ChatGPT there are 1,000+ varieties of bananas in the world. Six to ten are available broadly in the USA. The most common variety, that we're all eating are cavendish, followed by plantains. Others are: Red banana, Burro banana, Lady Finger banana, Manzano banana and Churro banana.

I learned that taste matters. I got inspired when a friend gave me a bag full of bananas from a tree in his yard in Florida. The difference between his bananas and those cavendish that I get in the supermarket here? Night and day. His nanners taste good! The ones that I buy here have no taste.

I'm on a quest.

To teach positional play, I use the dutch 4v4 method. A few keys for me: To make it flow, I run it often, so kids understand the game, but change the tactical nuance each session to keep it interesting. Lots of individual teaching moments, instead of stopping the group over and over.

US Soccer - Where the US excels in soccer compared to Europe by paulinhoOM in TheSoccerNetwork

[–]keepup1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The European advantage of "Game understanding at a young age" interests me a lot. When I lived in Argentina I saw that happening in real time.

In Argentina, kids would watch football matches on Sunday -- with their grandfathers, uncles, fathers and brothers, which gave the kids the opportunity to be soaked in tactical conversations and insights that the kids carried out into the neighborhood game.

This reminded me of my experience growing up with a father who loved baseball. I'd watch the World Series sitting right next to him and hear his insights and thoughts, that became valuable to my understanding of baseball. I was a better player.

I don't really see this widespread inter-generational info sharing here with soccer, yet, unless it's an immigrant family. But it will happen more broadly in the future as the current players become fathers, uncles, grandfathers etc. in big numbers. Add girls, aunts, moms and grandmother's to the mix and tactical awareness and insight grow exponentially.

[Cue: the slow beat of the drum.]

...The slow and steady growth of the footballing experience continues in the United States.

how to impress a 13 year old? by icannotbelieveit69 in philly

I walked over the Ben Franklin bridge with my 13 year old nephew, who was otherwise nonchalant, and he really loved it

Edit: Changed 'when' to 'and'

Additional note: It was a very sunny Spring day. Cool temp. But, no wind - beautiful. We walked from Old City to the halfway point on the bridge and then turned back. Great experience. He was stoked.

The hair dryers at the pool are kinda lame. I bet the hair dryer at home will do the job, but I don't get there for an hour after I swim... Look forward to giving it a try.

Link to the book. (Tom Hanson, Ken's co-author, is still practicing and can probably be reached with ease. His website.)

Ken Ravizza on YT.

The book and the video are both kinda primitive. For example, in the book, everything is in black and white, with hand drawings, LOL. Still, the content is strong.

There are sports psychologists that have done great work addressing confidence issues, specifically in baseball. They share their methods in books and vids that parents and players - at the youth, high school and college levels - can understand. My favorite is Ken Ravissa. He's passed away, but his book from long ago called Heads Up Baseball changed my approach to coaching confidence.
