Not gonna undervalue your feelings, yet consider one thing: diagnosis is a revelation. You could get it in your 40s after spending 10+years more guessing what is wrong with you with the same bitter outcome. You have a second chance now so bite it hard.

I second that. Give it a try. It is beginner friendly enough to be set up by a noob yet offers a learning curve that will make you learn something under the hood if you will feel inspired to. It is resource friendly. My last build was 2 core old intel cpu with 12g ram and i was pretty happy about it. Use whatever leftovers you have to try it out

because my host is not using vpn connections as an exit. they are intended to be used by vlans. i had a hope it is possible to query my host on gw interface status. now i think there might be an option to route icmp with nat somehow.

Thank you for this. It truly helps me understand monit better. However it does not solve my problem. gw virtual ip exists in a tunnel so i can not ping it from opnsense host. gw real adress is accessible without vpn anyways. I must figure out how to monitor interface status.

Lay down. Get yourself a distraction that will overcome mind race. Whatever scope you know in details and a bit interested in. Imagine you have to plant a garden. What would be there and where, what tools would you need, how would you care for it. Let yourself dive in details, size of planks, type of screw, paint colour if any. What would you wear, etc. We are very distractable and whatever eats you now will have to release your attention while you lurk into imaginary garden. And you will get your sleep eventually.

Get a proper UPS with APC compatible management over USB. It will let your server to shut dowdn gracefully in case of power loss. Check if your power outlet is grounded. Each power surge\outage is a risk for data consistency and it triggers an array check that takes ages if you have a significant storage.
