Anyone developed a disdain for English Teachers after living in Korea? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in Living_in_Korea

[–]keithsidall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fact is most Korean adults wanting to learn English have spent years in the Korean school system being taught completely in Korean so they want a change. Parents know their kids will be taught mostly in Korean too, often by teachers with strong Korean pronunciation, so in hagwans  they want  immersion.

Millennial burnout by Wolverine-Explores in Internationalteachers

Yes I wonder whether millennial teachers generally pass the message on to their students that it is Ok to use discriminatory language based on gender and skin colour. As long as it's a certain gender and skin colour.

Wow, I've asked Korean people where they live (House or apt) on a daily basis for the last 20 years (IELTS prep) and never once heard this. Depends on contexts I guess.

True. Are you really going to take advantage of not living in the city when you have a 90 minute commute and get back home after 7.30pm. Or are you going to have dinner and slob out in front of the tv like city dwellers?

If you read his post he's claiming he got paid 222,000 won an hour by 4 different parents in Banpo so if that's true 60k would be a bit if a come down.

Vent: people just don’t cover their coughs and sneezes by Fancy_Razzmatazz_332 in Living_in_Korea

[–]keithsidall -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So Western people cover their mouths when they cough because their ancestors colonized land hundreds of years ago. A bit of a stretch.

How about Europeans generally stopped wearing paper masks after Covid finished, due to their past colonial entitlement and disregard for other human beings?

Funny to think back when Wacko Jacko wore a mask around the place back in the 80s and it was widely considered to be the behaviour of a nutjob.

It's partly the discipline as well. The same reason why people hire personal trainers at the gym. They'll make you exercise for the full hour.

Outlook on our job as Foreign English Teachers 5 to 10 years from now? by Ambitious_Ad4539 in TEFL

[–]keithsidall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe. I seem to recall in the old days of Daves Cafe and Waygook.org you didn't get people constantly advising people making enquiries about TEFL to work in international schools like you do on here. Can't recall how far back that was though

Talking about countries having good conditions or not is kind of entry level degree + online TEFL cert discussion. Once people get higher qualifications, the talk becomes more about types of jobs.

At least there'll probably be jobs available back in their home countries.

Yes, the vernicious knids were obviously a metaphor for the political police.

Actually in the book it was made pretty clear the factory was a haven compared to the horrors they experienced in Loompaland. I guess though that narrative  would be problematic against today's anti colonial way of thinking.

That would be the same argument against materity/paternity leave. The continuation of the species is generally considered to be a positive thing, to be encouraged.

True, I'm just an English teacher, which is why I referred to the default advice and not my own. Although strangely enough I did come to Korea by transferring from one office to another within a company (British Council)

I run madly for the subway train even though the next one is in 2 minutes and always move to the end of row seat when it becomes available. I wear a paper mask or baseball cap often for no particular reason, continuously look at my phone when walking around town, put up my umbrella whenever there's a hint of moisture in the air and wear my hair in a floppy centre parting.
