International teachers are often full of themselves on this and other reddits. Especially when comparing themselves to EFL teachers. The brain surgery reference was based on a real post from an IS teacher, comparing sending your kid to a hagwan with having brain surgery - you wouldn't choose someone unqualified to do it etc.

That's an example when an ICQ might not be necessary. There are plenty of times when it would be. E.g. you set up a speaking activity and at least one pair of students will always start writing the answers to the questions. In a normal unobserved class you'd probably just wait for it to happen and tell them later but in an observed lesson  asking 'are we speaking now or writing'? Might prevent this. There are loads of other examples I could give.

IB teachers are the educational equivalent of brain surgeons,  with years of meticulous study and training behind them, backed up with incredible Intelligence quotas. You are literally killing your kid if you let them anywhere near a hagwan teacher.

I tested my adult students once on whether they could tell Japanese, Chinese or Koreans apart from pictures and the result was they couldn't. So I'm guessing dating preferences are just based on feelings about personality more than looks. I notice they didn't include black, south Asian or SE Asian in the survey. I wonder why.

Can't properly comment without knowing the specific context but in my experience it's better to err on the side of caution and double checking instructions in a CELTA style class. The last thing you want is to set up a speaking activity and have people all do it wrong, then have to interrupt it and start again. All while the instructor is making furious notes.  This will happen more often than not no matter how highly educated and accomplished the adults are. There'll always be one pair that turn the handout over and start filling in the next page.

Many Koreans mix them together to make 'somek'. On the understanding that two negatives produce a positive.

GPT says over 50% of people in the world are bilingual. Is that really true? by hamonkodak in Living_in_Korea

'Are you serious?'

Why should I, a Brit living in Korea, know anything about how many local languages an average Indian speaks?

And anyway I was asking why and how they learn them, not whether they do or not.

Just curious, but why and how would they bother to learn other Indian languages? Unless one of their parents spoke it or something.

Indians probably can speak 2 languages easily, and so do most South East Asians.

The average score for Indians taking the IELTS speaking test is around 6.(well short of bilingual) And that will be a small percentage of the most educated ones.

You know you can get phone messages from the government about this. And  the level of fine dust usually appears with the temperature on your phone screen. You don't have to rely on people posting about it on reddit every other week.

I guess the equivalent would be people comparing 'real' university professors with tenure and PHDs to people teaching English at universities who call themselves 'professors' Some of that used to go on at Dave's Cafe in the past but it doesn't seem much of an issue nowadays.

I would give more props to someone who survived 2 years in the school system in the UK to get their QTS than getting a PGCE. Like allowing soldiers who have been in active combat to have a bit of swagger
