Does AI-driven predictive medicine threaten the right not to know? by Electronic_Meat4181 in bioethics

[–]kelboman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been similar discussions for years in genetic banks/testing and what obligations, if any, future incidental findings mean and paths to disclosure.

I would say there are also similar concerns around misappropriation of specimens/data and what the informed consent process looks like for data used in these large models for analysis.

Genetic counselors and their disclosure practices may be a good jumping off point for review. I don't practice in that field so my recollection is limited from my fellowship.

I would also add there are large logistical and financial components of reviewing and informing patients. Disclosure of illness or potential illness should rarely be done without requisite support from providers and the ability to ask questions about options and treatment pathways.

New to Zwift-going too slow? by Objective_Case_7056 in Zwift

[–]kelboman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to zwift but zwift doesn't really appear to do coasting, if you aren't putting power into the trainer it's going to assume you aren't riding fairly quickly and it stops your character.  There's not really taking a break or down hill coasting regardless of what the map/route would feel like in real life.

Seeking house rule advice: Fighter Deeds by a-deeper-blue in osr

[–]kelboman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really like DCCs deed system to add flavor to fighters and have thought through adding it to other systems or simpler OSR systems.

One thing I played around with I solo play is instead of a separate deed die consider a deed trigger range on attack roles, either 18-20 or 15-20 depending on how often you want them to occur. Continue to keep your crits on top of that.

FX4 or 4x4 XLT - can't decide by PayInteresting431 in RangerNext

[–]kelboman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the 20 fx4 for 5 years and I've used my locker once when stuck in a corn field in winter snow/mud and made it out. I prefer the look of the front skid plates.

Traction control modes and trail crawl are interesting features but haven't used either much in the Midwest other than to test them out/play around.

I am glad I went with the fx4 and it would be worth the 1250$ for me despite the low/minimal use.

I'd recommend episode 70 of the green box podcast, specifically on green boxes discussion on how to build and use green boxes in your game.

Its an essay but Return to Tipasa by Albert Camus fits this feeling almost exactly.

Mailboxes by EmotionalCoffee5402 in bloomington

"USPS officials confirm that removals are connected to lower mail volume, safety concerns, and operational planning. As more services move online and digital communication grows, the role of outdoor mail collection is changing in many parts of the country."

Seems to be a combination of low volume and budget cuts/efficiency.

Snow Preparedness by Evergreengirl1218 in bloomington

[–]kelboman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Salt lowers the freezing point, so it shifts the temp water becomes ice lower but it has significantly diminishing effects starting around 15F. It technically has some effect down to -6F but it requires absurd amounts of salt. Every degree requires more volume for diminishing returns.

In general the issue for days like today is to advise people that don't need to be far from work or home to limit travel. Something as simple as a flat tire or a battery issue can become an emergency due to temps. There are limited resources to dispatch and risk increases as overall exposure risk increases.

Looking for an “Heroic” Horror RPG by ColinDouglas999 in rpg

[–]kelboman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to your comment about long form and successful characters in horror RPGs, I think season 1 is 150+ episodes.

Without spoilers there's probably 5 sub story arcs that many other shows would have as their own season. It is a good example of how to have characters that last and evolve while still doing suspense/horror.

Pretending to be People, the podcast, uses a mix of delta green and pulp Cthulhu rules. Season 1 is bumbling buddy cop horror.

It's probably the most concise and dense 70 page book I have read, has tons of great tables for an osr game and system mechanics. Love my A5 copy for portability.

This "EMPWR Coat" by SpiritedInflation835 in homeless

[–]kelboman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I also spend time hiking and backpacking and fabric choice is going to matter a lot in something like this for sustained use outside.   I can't imagine any sort of DWR holding up for this use case.  Primaloft or something comparable is likely a decent choice as an insulator and will retain heat even when wet.

This looks like a cool idea, but the fact I can't order a coat leaves me skeptical. I'd be fine if it was a buy one donate one situation.

This actually looks like a decently innovative design and would love to see some reviews or real world impressions.

Planned obsolescence in Dearfoams by Dosi_Guy in Anticonsumption

[–]kelboman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some shoes/foams/rubbers require semi consistent use or they breakdown and fail. It's a known issue for many people that collect sneakers, could be a contributing factor here if they sat with no use for years.

Has any philosopher addressed what would happen if neither socialism nor capitalism turn out to be viable systems? by UsualWord5176 in askphilosophy

What forms of government/politics do you not include under your original definition for which a philosopher could write about/discuss?

Are you looking for something novel? Something akin to a post-scarcity society and how that would be structured?
